I don’t either really. Cults start because people need a place to belong and one person gives them that place. I think his racist bullshit when he announced his run in 2016 felt like home to a lot of people who couldn’t be openly racist before. Beyond that, republicans are afraid of the government so they don’t want elected officials to be too intelligent.

"Afraid of the government" which builds roads and bridges, pays for your Social Security and Medicare, protects workers from toxic chemicals, sets a minimum wage, has Labor Laws to protect workers, protects our national parks, pays for all VA costs, pays for scientific research for medical problems (I know, I know -- it's all fake), protects you from theft at your ATM, and keeps a standing army (I know, I know -- you want to turn it against us), among dozens of other things.

Yup. The government is a terrifying thing.

It's not just the government they hate. It's now also our constitution, because he's has taught them to hate it. All those rules. But what's going to happen if he gets his way and rewrites it, as is his plan? Suddenly their lives, along with ours, are going to be pure hell. Who will they blame then?

This is how cults operate. Trump repeats himself ad nauseam, not because he's just devoid of new ideas, but because repeating the same things over and over causes his listeners to absorb the messages and believe them. It's simple but very. very effective. we use it on children to teach them everything from toilet training to high school chemistry. Memorization takes place whether we want it to or not. How many of your favorite rock songs are so familiar to you that you know the lyrics and sing along? It's another example of the same principle.

You know the 60 + challenges to the election, and how they were all proven false and dismissed? That was thanks to the work of an attorney called Marc Elias, who since then has started a website called DemocracyDocket where he describes what's going on, and how many top, top lawyers he's hired, and also how you can get involved.

Kamala just hired him on to her campaign.

Kamala is ON this.

And by the way, so is the Biden admin/Merrick Garland. Garland's DOJ has put all the leaders of the previous violence in jail, and the FBI (part of the DOJ) is tracking and infiltrated all these groups.

The MAGA leaders WANT us to waste our energy worrying about their threats & violence. Instead we should be spending all our energy to defeat them: getting out the vote, supporting/donating/volunteering/phonebanking, backing the Blue all the way down the ballot.

But yes, in the meanwhile, it's so freaking upsetting to watch the idiots descend into pure Nazism.

It's rote conditioning for most of these people. Most of them simply repeat the current catchphrases they see and hear on right-wing social media. Honestly social media brings out the worst in people because of its anonymity compared to face to face interactions. If someone persists in bringing this up in real life, you have to let them know the topic is a red line for you, and if that doesn't end their aggressiveness, then you simply have to drop them from direct interactions if at all possible.

In 2016 at the polling place, a man in the next carrel had his son with him. The little boy piped up and said "Clinton don't stand a chance!" laughing. The father laughed too. I smiled to myself thinking "you ignorant yokel." Well, guess who had the last laugh. I took a Xanax that night, went to bed at 10 and didn't look at any news site for the next 100 days. became intimately familiar with QVC, the weather channel and HGTV. And that was before knowing just how EVIL a trump term would be. I don't even want to think of what might be in store for us the evening of November 5.

Expand full comment
HI2thDoc's avatar

2016 was a perfect storm, if you want to use that term, of Russian interference, the greatly overblown Hillary email issue, James Comey rehashing the email issue 11 days before Election Day, years of right wing attacks on the Clintons, and Hillary's campaign screwing up by not visiting the battleground states in the closing weeks. The Russians are still interfering but the other factors will not be repeated. There is hope. We must just not let up.

what bothers me to the core is even if Harris/Walz wins, the MAGA teams are going to kick it in high gear with their election fraud and chaos, and it could be such a huge mess to sort out in the very end and the bothersome part is I have little faith that the Biden administration / Merrick Garland etc is prepared to counter-react and fight this fuckery tooth and nail...so much damage will have occurred that it will be impossible to prevail.

Eat plants! Love animals! I think the "there won't be any more cows, they're going get rid of the cows" is his way of saying "we" won't allow ''them" to eat meat anymore. They'll be forced to become vegetarians or vegans. Now the no more windows thing is harder to decipher. I have no clue where that comes from. Maybe because "we" have to avoid being pushed out of windows by "them". To solve this dilemma we will outlaw windows? Lame but that's all I got.
