My question, in addition to “how the fuck is Donald Trump not in jail?” is "how the fuck is Donald Trump allowed to run for President?"

I think we've all learned something we never knew ... early lawmakers never bothered to add this kind of restriction into the rules. Perhaps now would be a good time to put laws like this on the books. I don't care if you're Republican or Democrat, if you've been indicted and are facing criminal trials, you cannot run for President. Get your legal shit sorted first and, if you come out smelling like a rose, THEN you can give it a go.

Expand full comment

Though I'd be really happy if this were on the books now and in this context, I think I'd prefer convicted/found liable to "indicted." You just know with a law like that, there will be R attorneys general lining up to indict Dems on one sham charge after another.

Expand full comment

(Damn them all for requiring me to think like a criminal.)

Expand full comment

That was my first thought too. Convicted of a crime, especially a federal crime, absolutely. Any other criminal activity, like fraud or sex offenses, would have to be carefully worded so misdemeanors wouldn’t be included. This should apply to every level of federal government, POTUS and SCOTUS certainly, but also heads of departments and those holding cabinet positions.

BTW, that lunatic Flynn should be called back to active service and court-marshaled.

Even after living through Nixon, Reagan, and W, I never thought things could get this bad. I love my country. My ancestors came here in 1704 to build a new life and I’m proud of that, but I brought up leaving with my son, only to discover that he and my D-I-L have been looking into what a move to Canada would entail.

Love the Flynn Idea

I wish I could take credit for thinking it up, but I read it somewhere and thought it was an excellent idea myself.

My 19-yo son and I are moving to Scotland in the spring; I'm a dual cit, he's working on his UK citizenship as we speak.

Expand full comment

Yes, that's an excellent point.

Expand full comment

And That is True and Frightening

Kind of like the way all The State Justices were appointed( non supreme court)

Expand full comment

And here's another frightening detail: I know SEVERAL otherwise kind, intelligent, educated people who STRONGLY support Trump STILL. I don't talk to them about it because there's no point. But it chills me. I actually saw one, a guy who works in my profession and does well, just comment on Facebook that "Trump is the only one who can get us out of this mess now..." 😳 I mean, wtf is he talking about??

Expand full comment

Do people think we're just kidding or slinging mud when we call them a cult? It's not. It's a cult. Kind, intelligent, educated people DO NOT think things like, "Trump is the only one who can get us out of this mess now..." Back away from them, slowly.

Expand full comment

I know what you mean. But I'm thinking of one now (not the one who made that comment) who is sincerely a lovely man. Like he and his wife took in the neighbor's kids when their parents were doing drugs, even though the neighbors were threatening them. He's a mechanic, and he fixes up cars ands gives them away. And he's really quiet about it. He's sincerely a sweet man. Yet he loves Trump.

It might not seem possible, but I live in a small city that's a blue island surrounded by red, so I can't help knowing a lot of Republicans, and some of them are MAGAites. I and others here are befuddled.

Expand full comment

It stopped making sense around 2018. I've tried so hard to understand their mindset, even objectively stepping outside my "bubble of liberal," to do so, and I can't. I've read books. I've watched documentaries. Nothing explains it. It remains a complete mystery how people like the ones you've described find love/solace/representation in a man like Trump. It's like they're background characters in "Groundhog Day" where every morning they've completely forgotten what happened the day before and just relive the same shit over and over, learning some stuff, but then forgetting it again as they sleep.

Expand full comment

I understand exactly where you're coming from. My surrogate family for the last 20 years are the kindest and most welcoming people imaginable...but they are ALL MAGAs. They love FFD. I've had to distance myself since 2020, because since then, they all have become more and more unbalanced and hateful. I have no doubt they will vote for him again, and think they are saving the country by doing it. This is in a blue county in a blue state where you would never believe it were you to meet any of these people at a social gathering or get to know them on a perfunctory basis at work...and it scares me to death!!! TFG MUST NOT BE allowed on the 2024 Presidential ballot!

Expand full comment

Cult members can do nice things, but no one, absolutely no one who supports Trump is intellegent or kind. Did you point out that these people believe in Dems as running a secret pedophile ring, stop the steal, etc... This is not intelligent thinking and if you can engage in that, you are not intelligent.

Garbage in, garbage out is what coders say about software. These people have been brainwashed listening to “stars” like “The Apprentice trump”, F**ker Carlson, etc. And since their friends think the same way - they’re too deep in doodoo to see their way out. Logic was probably NEVER their strong suit. We need to shut FOX (& OAN, Newsmax etc) DOWN!

Expand full comment

I agree. They are certainly lacking critical thinking skills. But I mean intelligent in the sense of functioning successfully in society and professionally. I think about it a lot, just... how? I can almost understand the overt grunting racist white guys who think they deserve things just for being white men, and who feel threatened by social changes. But so many of the others...? I do not get it.

Expand full comment

Don't discount the damage the Fox News has done. If that's all these kind, intelligent, educated people ever watch, then that's all they know & believe. Most people want to live in an echo chamber. Education notwithstanding, your MAGA friends are no different.

I know! I had a former Seal tell me; “Trump is the only one who can save the republic”. I can’t even imagine how much hate or how much propaganda it would take to actually believe that. 🤦‍♀️

Seals and all military are trained to follow orders. If their commanding officers are suggesting Trump will save this country, they're probably going to believe it.

Spot on. It doesn't make sense that the tangerine turd is still allowed to galavant around the country campaigning while spewing his toxic bullshit. Nobody else so shameless with that many felony indictments would be allowed so much leniency and freedom while never shutting the fuck up. He continues to benefit from the enabling two-tier system while most anyone else be would locked up for life.

His yammering will be his demise eventually.

Expand full comment

Also, why can’t the “policy” (or “understanding,” or whatever it is) that a sitting president cannot be indicted be reversed? Can a sitting president strangle a baby in the Oval Office with 20 witnesses present and get away with it? At least until the next election? Senators and representatives are subject to indictments, as we unlucky voters are all too aware, so why are presidents exempt? I have no idea how this kind of reform could be enacted, but it seems like it might be a good idea for the future.

He isn't running for President. He IS running for the Republican nomination.

It's not over till the fat guy from New Jersey sings.

Expand full comment

You’d have to have a functioning congress to do this, and sadly, I don’t see this happening for a while as too many Americans only get their news from outlets blaming the Democrats for everything which reinforces (in their small brains) their ridiculously stupid votes for Republicans year after year. (That, and our populace is woefully undereducated and has the attention span of a gnat on steroids.) And Republicans aren’t changing anything. They love the chaos. Other than that, we’re good.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Founding Fathers came from good families. They were land owning white men. Privilege literally means ‘private law’. None of them ever would have been publicly tried and convicted of anything back in the day. Their families would have taken care of it internally.

Welcome! Texas isn't a particularly great place for the rule of law -- the AG is still under indictment (he has been since he was elected) and the lege didn't remove him from office when they had a chance. Dr Evil Hot Wheels is still gov, trying to figure out yet more diabolically clever ways to drown migrants in the Rio Grande.

On the plus side, we can still drink heavily (for now) and if you like beer, you're in luck. (Try an Electric Jellyfish if you get a chance.) Beer and the music are what make it possible to live here. Also, you're less likely to get heat stroke at COTA now that it's cooled off a little bit.

For anybody wondering, "community service" isn't what it sounds like. Sentenced to that, you won't be working at a food pantry, or answering phones in the state house. You'll be doing things like cleaning bus stops, or cleaning up fire stations, sweeping up those halls in the state house, or other drudge work. And you'll be doing it all under armed guard.

Heads up: Bergman sucks. For starters, he's a carpetbagger. He's from Louisiana. I don't think he's ever spent so much as a night in the UP except in a hotel a few times. His father lived here for a few years as a kid--that's it.

Second, he totally supported The Big Lie.

Third, he hasn't done a thing in 6 (or so) years.

Fourth, he's some kind of ex-military, and has small man complex. I've seen him in person; he's shorter than me, and I'm 5'6". Nothing wrong with being short, but he does have that belligerent overcompensating demeanor.
