The word you want to use is "Shame!" in reference to anyone in a national guard or marine uniform. Try not to say "Thank you for your service."

Expand full comment
Keely Cofrin Allen's avatar

Ok on the "shame" suggestion - stop. It. These women and men joined the guard to serve their communities and their country. The current administration wants to politicize the military - DO NOT do it.

Would you have wanted MAGA idiots yelling "shame" at NG members during the Biden administration? They follow orders as they were trained. So far, no soldier has done anything egregious. They are trying to do their jobs, people giving them shit will not do anything but harm.

My husband is a retired NG officer. He talks about how difficult it would have been for him to serve this Commander in Chief because he's an embarrassment. Being yelled at would have just made it harder.

Don't

Keely Cofrin Allen's avatar

I'm not sure that a soldier on the ground can just decide that an order to deploy to CA is illegal. Being ordered to shoot civilians would clearly be illegal. I think those serving in the NG deserve our support. Save your wrath for those giving the orders

Expand full comment
Dave the Spot-on Moron's avatar

They are shooting civilians with rubber bullets now. That desensitizes them from taking aim and firing live, fmj rounds on unarmed civilians. It will happen if this continues much longer. It happened at Kent State - four dead.

Expand full comment
David H's avatar

There is no clear bright line between legal and illegal orders, especially for typical enlisted personnel. A smooth-running machine should not be forced to stop and ponder whether or not to go when the order is given to go. As an enlisted person I thought the whole war was utterly stupid, indefensible. In Lt. Calley's platoon I think I would have known that the order to massacre villagers was not a legal order. But if you are in the Nat Guard and you are deployed to LA, are you going to know what is an illegal order?

I was 11 months old and living in Canada in May of 1969 so you may have to explain your reference.

Soldiers do have the right to disobey illegal orders. But expecting an 18 yo who joined the NG to pay for college to get that political in this situation is ridiculous. Hold the administration and the command to account, don't scream at individual soldiers. I thought we'd figured that out by now.

Oh, dear, a youngster making comments on something she didn't live through and knows nothing about. May 20, 1969. I hope someday soon National Guardsmen (in gas masks)surround 2000 peaceful students (not in gas masks) and a National Guard helicopter flies over you and drops tear gas on you. Trust me, a very enjoyable experience and one you certainly deserve to have. Republicans have done their best in the past to destroy the most beautiful state in the union, and finally, they don't control us anymore and California is the fourth largest economy in the world and supports the USA financially, especially all the red states. If you don't live here, try working harder, so we don't have to send you so much money. And I'm guessing no one has ever explained illegal wars of aggression like Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Tess, it is all craziness and we must not lose sight of it. As the Guardian had an article on hypernormalization. That is the people who are ignoring what is going on, or finding it acceptable. I would say all of the members of the Republican party are hypernormalizing all so that they can sell out their families and the people they represent and hold on to power.

We the People reject the ideas of Donald Trump! According to the Daily Koz, the majority of Americans do not like what Trump is doing in LA.

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2025/6/10/2327039/-Americans-largely-reject-Trump-s-military-invasion-of-California?detail=emailrecap

I read this piece after starting an article on the Stasi in Humboldt University in Berlin. It starts off telling us that in 1969 about 50 leaflets appeared in the main hall of the main campus building. I was in the building last month so I can picture it. The leaflets told people to boycott the obligatory social science classes because the state was undemocratic and authoritarian and the most elemental freedoms were suppressed.

The 2 students that were secretly typing up and distributing these leaflets and this led to a greater presence of cameras and letters and telephone spying, and every typewriter in the university was gathered up to figure out who was doing this. They compared thousands of written documents looking for a comparison, because these were hand typed. Looking through the files on students etc...They looked at hundreds of thousands of people's registrations of their residences in East Germany.

One was caught as he tried to flee to West Germany, and was given 2 years 8 months prison sentence. His name was Rainer Schottlaender. He was the son of a philosophy professor at the Humboldt University, who was not acknowledged as a full professor because he would not subscribe to Marxism. Both father and son were watched by the state until their death, even though the son lived in West Germany later.

Just reminded of where things can be headed if we do not protest in huge numbers too large to contain.

In Solidarity!! ✌🏽

Could you tell me what “the Dems are too busy actually working” on that precludes them from holding pressers, let alone showing up, as John and Jane Q. Public are constantly being beseeched to do? Kamala Harris, or whoever is currently the putative leader of the Democratic party, should be out there in the streets of LA right now, gettin’ down and dirty with non-violent protesters. Instead she’s being shown dining at a fine restaurant. Isn’t avoiding ‘bad optics’ a big part of your playbook, Democrats? This is an example of how your apparent cluelessness is failing your constituents so badly.

I’m pissed and frustrated, sorry/not sorry.

Stores put plywood over their windows. Now the riots in Oakland over Oscar somebody, did feature violence in 2010, but these were largely shoe stores and looters. Berkeley never did looters. It is because of him that my BFF was able to marry the love of his life in SF when Newsom approved of same sex marriages. A few years later, voters undermined this act.
