I was 11 months old and living in Canada in May of 1969 so you may have to explain your reference.
Soldiers do have the right to disobey illegal orders. But expecting an 18 yo who joined the NG to pay for college to get that political in this situation is ridiculous. Hold the administration and the command to account, don't scream at individual soldiers. I thought we'd figured that out by now.

you nailed it. It is their officers who must hold the line on lawful orders. Sadly, the CinC and SecDef have left these good men/women twisting in the breeze.
Oh, dear, a youngster making comments on something she didn't live through and knows nothing about. May 20, 1969. I hope someday soon National Guardsmen (in gas masks)surround 2000 peaceful students (not in gas masks) and a National Guard helicopter flies over you and drops tear gas on you. Trust me, a very enjoyable experience and one you certainly deserve to have. Republicans have done their best in the past to destroy the most beautiful state in the union, and finally, they don't control us anymore and California is the fourth largest economy in the world and supports the USA financially, especially all the red states. If you don't live here, try working harder, so we don't have to send you so much money. And I'm guessing no one has ever explained illegal wars of aggression like Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq. I worked my way through Berkeley as a live in babysitter... You know, UC Berkeley, the best public university in the country, then and now.
You really don't need to be so condescending to her. Your comments are unwarranted and unnecessary. If we are all in this together, why would you want to attack her age, her country and her comment? Sounds like something a MAGA would write. And don't call me youngster because I'm your age.
Deborah, she started with "Reagan was president of the United States," I believe. I remember before he was governor of California. I also remember how California went down hill after he became governor. I rarely need a history lesson from anyone, and I don't usually learn anything from anyone. If I want to, I ask. I'm 75, I started attending UC Berkeley in 1968 while I was still in high school, was self supporting two days after I graduated from high school, and lived through the tear gas, beatings, and shooting at Berkeley. I probably have bailed more people out of jail than you did and I started when I was 18. I've been married once, for 45 years last month, and my focus in life is not (!) politics, it's the climate crisis, and I focus my life on survival, especially so my son will not starve to death. I live in earthquake country, so survival also means being prepared all the time, which, frankly, I learned from my parents. If you have something new to tell me, please do, but she was telling me things I knew and I knew she had no idea about what I was talking. I could go on and on, but I think I've said enough for now. A warning: don't get me started on the three illegal wars of aggression this country has lost in my lifetime and the soldiers who participated in them.
I will go to my deathbed believing Ronnie was the worst thing to happen to Calif . Looking back, we saw a clear picture of what the repub agenda would be .
I live in earthquake country too and I'm exactly your age. I remember all of my high school and college years. No one even hinted that you're stupid or not informed. But you're arrogant and condescending about your knowledge. That was and still is my point. Your 2nd post was the same tone as the first one. If someone needs to be educated about an event, there are much more polite ways to do it. Most people posting here appear to be educated and knowledgeable and approachable. The last word does not appear to be describing you. But I don't come on here to pick a fight with anyone so I will wish you a nice day and move on.
You completely misunderstand me. I live in Washington state and have voted for Democrats ever since I was eligible to vote in 2005. I'm a dual Australian-US citizen. You seem to be arguing with your idea of what I believe.
