Cao: "I’ll sit here [behind the camera] all night if you want to, but for me to drive six and a half hours down to Abingdon or something like that and to stand there with four other dudes and to have 30 seconds to answer questions, it’s just ridonkulous, it’s just crazy."
Indeed he did call the Staunton News-Leader a podunk newspaper. The N-L is part of the USA Today Network. Per Wikipedia, the News Leader was founded in 1904 (with heritage dating to 1890), with circulation 6,146 Daily 6,721 Sunday (as of 2021). Not WaPo or the NYT, but an integral media source in the Shenandoah Valley.
Yes, it means no-wheres-ville, off the map. Insignificant. Hardly the descriptor for Staunton VA or its newspaper. Staunton is a college town, an artsy town, a great foodie place, and its gem: https://americanshakespearecenter.com/
Thanks. Such a beautiful theatre space ! What is it with individuals and their hatred of natural beauty and shared culture. I will never understand it.
I feel for y’all in VA and in NC, my former state of where I was born and raised. truly, this is the first time I have heard of Cao. What a nightmare he is!

Podunk is not a vernacular term I am familiar with. I assume it’s derogatory.
