Fascism hypercharged with racism, I'd say, or maybe vice versa. Toward the end of Isabel Wilkerson's (great!) book CASTE, she quotes civil rights scholar Taylor Branch as saying that white people in the U.S. have to choose between whiteness and democracy. My response so far: "The jury's still out on that one."
