look like the Times changed their headline once again.

Harris campaign press release:

Donald Trump is running scared, trying to back out of the debate he agreed to and running to Fox News to bail him out. He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he agreed to on Sept. 10. The Vice President will be there one way or another to speak to a prime time national audience. Mr. Anytime, anywhere anyplace should have no problem unless he's too scared to show up on the tenth."

Is anyone at the NYT ever actually ashamed of themselves about anything? Or do they just speed dial Mommy and cry, “Please! Please! Please! Tell me how special I am!”

Expand full comment

I no longer think they are hoodwinked.

Their coverage is intentional.

Expand full comment

I wonder if the NYT has noticed the thousands and thousands of cancelled subscriptions because of their pro-Trump narratives...It didn't seem to hurt their bottom line at all. I realize that perhaps their advertisers are also pro-Trump and will continue to buy, but they must also know their audience reach is still shrinking.

Expand full comment

WaPo too. Wonder if they will rethink the hiring of right-wing leaders in the newsroom.

Expand full comment

I think they think if a thought passes through their brain it must be correct. They are above fact checking themselves.

Expand full comment

I think their bosses are pushing them to promote a pro-trump narrative whenever possible.

Expand full comment

They certainly ARE that arrogant.

Expand full comment

The NYT may not be hoodwinked, but they are hoodwinking their readers.

We know it is, Nepo baby Sulzberger, and the editor Joe Kahn, have said out loud, that saving democracy is not their job, and Kahn said he can't wait until the orange Gollum is back in the white house. (Maybe not an exact quote)

Expand full comment

Often the story is accurate and balanced, although frequently front-loaded with the right-wing lies, and the actual facts come further down (maybe when people have stopped reading.) But the headlines are the real sin against the truth, and it's the headline writers who have something to answer for.

Expand full comment

The editors generally write the headlines, but it is depressing when they use maga disinformation, stated as fact.

Expand full comment

The headline is part of the 'story'. Therefore, no it isn't.

There are no both sides to a lie.

Anne Applebaum's new book Autocracy, Inc explains the world war that is raging now. Autocrats/Oligarchs/Organized Crime vs Freedom/Democracy/Human Rights. And she describes the propaganda tactics and platforms used by the crooks to defeat the Good Guys.

It's obvious that The New York Times, Murdoch's Wall Street Journal and Fox News, and Russia Today TV (RT.com) are propaganda tools of the Bad Guys.

One hundred percent. That's what's so disturbing about his low information voters, they don't see this. There's an article in the Guardian this morning, Inside The Maga Mind. I've said this a 100x, humans basic needs for survival is to belong to something and feel validated. The rallies and Diaper Don fill that void in their lives. Each rally is like a family reunion to them. They are liked minded in their failures and grievances in life. They don't have cognitive clue how and why we are here. Other than gerrymandering.

They have replaced the 1920's KKK rallies with MAGAQ.

Expand full comment

"Each rally is like a family reunion to them" is brilliant. It (as so many things do) makes me wonder: What are they going to do when he loses? What are they going to do when he decompensates in public? What are they going to when he dies?

Sell pieces of his coffin.

Expand full comment

Pull an Ayatollah Khomeni funeral stunt?

Expand full comment

Ok, since they sold off the body parts they won’t need the coffin except to hold a fake funeral for which the attendees will also be charged. They’ll also sell the carefully weighed dirt that his coffin displaced. The dirt will come in a golden box with a superhero bonus card included.

Expand full comment

I've also thought about that. Trauma therapy???

Expand full comment

Well, the pieces of him will of course be for sale. The brain will cost the most, the heart the least. Fingers and toes will be fairly affordable. Ribs will be a Fourth of July special. But the guts have already been sold. I heard they were offal.

How will they find the brain? It’s so teeny tiny.

Expand full comment

Whenever that is, it can't come soon enough.

Heather Cox Richardson wrote a lovely piece about Lincoln and Edwin Stanton's words at Lincoln's deathbed--'Now he belongs to the ages'. When the Yam dies, I guarantee there will be nothing of the sort. Maybe, 'hold a mirror under his nose and see if he's still breathing.'

But if you said this to them, they’d be offended

I’m thinking the NYTimes ARE the bad guys. They’re not tools of the bad guys, they ARE the bad guys - in it up to their necks.

Expand full comment

Yes, Applebaum is a keeper.

Expand full comment

A "tell" that identifies a media platform as a sellout to dictators/oligarchs/thugs is when it attacks the heroes of individual freedom and human rights and democracy. And gives legitimacy to the liars and murderers. As though "listening to both sides" is virtuous. When it comes to stopping evil, you can't be on both sides.

Expand full comment

And have been for decades, Wapo has been joining them incimentally for years, and finally made the leap by hiring Will Lewis, a Murdoch Hatchet-man, who came up through his tabloids in the UK (which are so venal they are in court for criminal coverups right now.)

Expand full comment

He didn't "propose" one, he made one up! Fing Times needs to wake up!

Expand full comment

They know just what they're doing. They are 100% awake,

Expand full comment

Headline writers are generally not whoever wrote the article and sometimes have not read the article on which they’re about to slap a catchy little heading. That said, there is no excuse for using that common practice as an opportunity to introduce bias, let alone to deliberately mislead the reader. Bad headlines are bad journalism.

Expand full comment

I don’t give a flying F who does what at the newspaper- they are sloppy and have been bought out.

Expand full comment

They aren't sloppy at all, It's deliberate.

Expand full comment

Wow, as fast as the NY TIMES is backpedaling, they should consider entering the Tour de France!

By the way, what IS he wearing‽ A short kimono over a t-shirt? Very snappy!

Expand full comment

So they didn’t print a retraction but just changed their effing headline? Shitty, shitty, shitty journalism! For shame! It’s really sad when the Old Gray Lady has to whore herself out in order to put food on its bottom line table.

Before Joe Biden announced he was withdrawing from the race, he organized the Democratic Party to stand behind Kamala Harris, and he organized the Western Alliance to support the prisoner swap. And he did all this while senile. yeah, sure! No, he did all this while he had COVID. Wish I could vote for Joe.

Expand full comment

Exactly! I’d vote for him but I’m glad he dropped out because she has a much better chance of winning. How he pulled that off is nothing short of brilliant.

Expand full comment

Indeed! I LOVED the fact he let the Repubs waste millions of dollars over a week running against him in their convention, and then waited until Sunday NIGHT so the talking heads that morning were long done.

Has the entire lame-stream media machine gone crazy?! Kamala Harris would never agree to debate TRump on Fox Noise with an audience. TRump lies like the rest of us breathe. I'll be so glad when Kamala wipes the floor with the Orange Skidmark. It will be a glorious day for democracy. Buckle up, TRump. You're about to get your ass handed to you by a confident, experienced, multiracial woman.

Expand full comment

I think debating before an audience would work well for her. The more people who can bear witness to Trump's stream of lies and insane gibberish, the better. Let Trump be Trump: incoherent on and off, a repugnant liar always. Kamala will drive him crazy.

Expand full comment

But NOT on Fox Noise! Fox would fill the audience with a bunch of Cult 45 members who will boo and hiss every time Kamala spoke. I don't think an audience helps anyone decide who is the better candidate. I know that Kamala Harris will not let Trump run roughshod over her like Biden did. But with a live audience at Fox? No friggin' way.

Expand full comment

Not on Fox. Absolutely. But I don't think Kamala will agree to Fox, if it comes to that. I'm betting Trump won't dare debate her.

Republicans don't really 'debate'...even on Fox they just try to shout over eachother.

Expand full comment

That's so when she rebuts him, he can say SHE turned him down.

Expand full comment

Just about the most frustrating thing about the fuckwits, as you so rightly call them, is that every time they say something, with no evidence, then contradict it within hours, again with no evidence, the reaction to being caught out is an enormous ”So What?” It’s like they’re all small children defying Mom while their hands are still in the cookie jar.

Expand full comment

That's because they're all bullshitters. As Professor Frankfurt observed in "On Bullshit," "The liar knows the truth and chooses not to say it. A bullshitter doesn't care if what they say is true or not."

Expand full comment

Since fighting the libs is the utmost and paramount thing in life it doesn't matter what you use to fight—lie or truth it's all the same. Steve Bannon said, “flood the zone with shit." He used that word because lies are so much easier to produce than truth. And if you ever run out of lies you just crap some more. Lies are shit produced by the brain.

Did jessie watters endure a terrible head injury years ago? I can't think of any other explanation for his rampant stupidity. His parents and grandparents are/were bright and accomplished (per his wikipedia entry), and he attended Trinity, which is a good college.
