hey, happy birthday-and-a-half to us. it was 18 months ago, on October 28, 2022, that I started this thing. thank you all for hanging out here with me

Expand full comment

And thank you for telling it like it is re NYT. I used to have a subscription and was a faithful reader but they’ve just gone off the rails. And the internet is now an enormous competitor.

Expand full comment

I canceled my subscription a while back and use that money to support Jeff and others on Substack.

Expand full comment

That’s exactly what I did. One too many NYT-Sienna polls and the usual. I didn’t quite understand until today why NYT was routinely dragging the Biden administration and the President himself. I thought they just wanted to keep the race close out because of their profit motive. Keep those campaign add $$ coming in. But to see our nation jeopardized by Sulzberger’s sheer pettiness? Perhaps NYT aspires to compete with NewsCorp as the TASS of a future Trump administration.

Expand full comment

I wonder if Putin funds them, or some other right-wing dipshit?

Expand full comment

I cancelled NYT a few months into Biden's inauguration. Totally disgusted that Peter Baker was whining on TV like a spoiled child about POTUS not accepting interview requests. Can anyone else imagine what Joe Biden walked into on Day One, Day 30, etc? We the public will probably never know what crises (plural) dfg left behind.

Expand full comment

I remember that the Covid-19 pandemic was in full swing after having killed over a million Americans due to Shitler's lies, the economy was in freefall, and everyone hated us.

Expand full comment

Unfortunately, I also remember that. I also remember very nearly having a nervous breakdown requiring a trip to the Nervous Hospital for the four years prior to Joe Biden's inauguration.

Expand full comment

Me, too--yesterday, after reading the Politico story (that made it all make sense). Gave it as my reason for cancelling, too.

Expand full comment

Me too! Good change!

Expand full comment

Me, too!

Expand full comment

I canceled too. I found it to downplay outrageous and anti democratic Behavior. I hope the paper js boycotted. they surely deserve it.

Expand full comment

I jumped in & cancelled my subscription to the NYT this afternoon.

Expand full comment

My online subscription was only $4 weekly but I canceled a while back and get the Associated Press free every day all day for any “real” news sans opinions.

Expand full comment

Me too, and WaPo who has followed the no investigative reporting trend, the Times set.

Expand full comment

I can't even remember why I cancelled. It wasn't any one thing; I think it was a cumulative disaffection. WAPO, too.

Expand full comment

Yep. I canceled mine too.

This is directed at Jeff.

Jeff, then my million dollar question is why the fuck doesn’t Biden take an interview with the New York Times in the first place? Why the fuck answer me this? If he had done it from the beginning this wouldn’t be a, excuse me using your favorite lexicon, a FUCKEN deal. This is why Biden is so up his own ass. He will risk losing this because of his own stupid fucken stupid out of touch personality. Let me include and cross pollinate a piece I wrote yesterday from my own blog.

You Know Something Is Happening Here But You Don’t Know What it Is, Do You, Mr. Jones

The title is taken from an old Bob Dylan song. And it reflects the protests taking place mostly on college campuses that have spread across the nation in reaction to the massive slaughter of Arabs in Gaza by the Israeli army.

The world has reacted in a very predictable fashion. First Hamas invades Israel and slaughters 1,200 people while taking a large quantity of prisoners. The bombardment ensues killing tens of thousands. The brutal brilliance of Hamas leadership correctly predicted what is now taking place on the world stage, making Israel an international pariah. They were and are willing to sacrifice their own as collateral damage to further the cause of a Palestinian statehood. One might extrapolate that this extreme is a reaction to countless decades of what has amounted to ethnic cleansing by migrants from other lands who were themselves ethnically cleansed. It’s a vicious cycle of historic human behavior that can be found anywhere humans have migrated including the Americas.

Events have fostered a new anti-war movement unseen since the Vietnam War period. From the Berkeley Free Speech Movement which spread east across the nation now has its modern corollary at Columbia University which has spread west and south.

This social movement will not end until major issues are resolved in the Middle East and there is no prospect for this happening under the current regime in Israel. And because 2024 is an election year, there will no doubt be massive protests on the streets of Chicago during the democratic convention. Have we been here before? Yes we have. In 1968, the culmination of the growing anti-war movement took its greatest manifestation on the streets which turned into riots and abusive police response. It tore apart any meaningful messaging democratic leadership attempted under LBJ, whose leadership the war was blamed. Ironically, Lyndon Johnson was the most progressive president in the latter half of the 20th century but by 1968, he was cornered by his own post WWII anti communist mentality. The times had changed and he suffered the consequences with a withdrawal of candidacy and a defeat at the polls which ushered in a corrupt administration under Nixon.

There is no comparing Nixon to Donald Trump. As unlikable and ultimately paranoid as Nixon became, Trump is a deal breaker of immense proportion. He will destroy whatever remains good in this nation. Everything negative has already been said of this monster. Indeed, my book reveals it all in, “Donald’s Vanity Tantrums,” in which my latest story addition explains his behavior when in the 1970s and early 1980s, his mentor, Roy Cohen, coached Trump to never admit guilt; to never admit defeat and to always counter attack all charges. This epitomizes Trump today.

Is this Deja vu all over again? I think there is a growing chance that massive protests will break out on the streets of Chicago. Joe Biden is being rightfully cast as the ‘Mr. Jones’ of this commentary for not reading the tea leaves and for giving Israel any armaments it requests to continue the slaughter of innocent people who only have wanted a place to live unhindered.

I was 15 years old in 1968 and even as a young person, I ruminated why the anti-war movement was destroying the very political party that contributed so much to civil rights legislation and related causes. Is Joe Biden our modern Lyndon Baines Johnson? Perhaps you should ask yourself this question.

according to the mediaite.com story I linked to, Joe Biden is annoyed at the Times' reporting on Hunter Biden

Expand full comment

Plus, the Times is a piece of shit now. That’s good enough for me.

Expand full comment

But you know, in politics you need to put bruising aside for the greater good of the program. Oh, so since they did that, I’m gonna do this shit to get back at them. That’s sure bet for a pending loss. I get what you said but still stupid. And we are not just talking about just another important we can’t lose this one election. No, WE CANT LOST THIS FUCKEN ELECTION DO YOU UNDERSTAND. WE CANT LOSE THIS FUCKEN ELECTION. And little Joey Biden doesn’t want to talky to the Times because of… shit fuck “I’m mad at this I’ll get them back even if it means losing my election. Watch how satisfying it will be to lose knowing I fucked with the great New York Times.”

Now Senior Jeff, you should hire me to write when you are under the weather. Ha… ha…

Billy, you need to learn how to spell, use apostrophes, and what the difference is between “Señor” and “Senior”. I can’t believe you actually publish material that you expect people to take seriously. Ha … ha … not. 🙄

But… but… I don’t want you to take it seriously. Seriously. It’s no longer my fault it’s Apple’s Fault and it’s AI. I absolve myself. And if you are a teacher, do give me a flunking grade. I agree. We MUST win this election, and more, but you lost me when you descended into useless humorless insults.

I only wish you could understand how… well, my title says it all, Mr Jones.

Do you really think an interview with Biden will help him? The Times will ask questions about his age, Hunter, alleged payments from China and Ukraine, Afghanistan, Gaza? Do you think the Times will make it flattering? Will they enumerate his many accomplishments? No. So why should he give them the opportunity to denigrate him? They just want to show Biden as an inept person who has done nothing for the country. No way should he do an interview.

Expand full comment

I agree! There are plenty of other places Biden can speak with.

Expand full comment

As he should, but isn't.

Expand full comment

He just did a live interview with Howard Stern, it's the shitty treatment and the entitlement of the Times.

Expand full comment

An interview would have more impact in the last two months of the campaign than it would now.

Taking a beat, I recommend everyone listen to Michelle Wolf's 2018 White House Correspondence Dinner performance. 19 minutes of bravery and brilliance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDbx1uArVOM

Net: EVERYONE knew in 2018 exactly what Trump, the Republicans (ruthless) the Democrats (not ruthless enough) and the media had going on.

As for the NYT, appreciate that, as Michelle Wolf pointed out: "The media love Trump. He's made you a lot of money."

Could it be that NYT knows that a second term of Biden is an end of Trump news? That we will have coverage of his criminal trials, but the minutiae of back and forth bartering dates, times, places and conditions of these trials will be so drawn out as to cease to draw the crowds an angry and potent Trump does? Hmmm?

Expand full comment

🎯They have taken every opportunity to screw him over, publishing every breathless republican lie about his son.

Expand full comment

And that crap is despicable. As the mother of a son who had addiction problems, who eventually died of a heroin overdose in 2008, I understand the heartache of seeing your child fall down that hole, & trying everything you can to throw him a lifeline.

It’s just so lowlife of the nyt & the republicans to drag his son into their torment of Biden. Shame on them all

Expand full comment

Lamorindalinda,

I’m with you 🎯

Expand full comment

Superior people like the NYT like to disparage people just to show who's in charge. Unless I knew and trusted the reporter, I would not give an interview to the NYT.

Expand full comment

Not to mention Maga Maggie Haberman. Journalists should be neutral. If not, reassign them to the obituaries.

🎯🎯🎯❤️They never forgave the Clintons for being self-made, and from Arkansas. They made all thost trust-fund babies feel lazy.

Expand full comment

But he could always choose someone to his liking instead of making enemies where they shouldn’t be.

Expand full comment

Maybe Sulzberger wouldn't let him. That would be letting Biden control the narrative. The interview would have to be somewhat critical to show that the NYT is so very independent.

Expand full comment

Maybe maybe not. We forget that these well, all news companies are for-profit. And without a doubt, the Times wants to increase its base. And you don’t do it by being a Fox company. They make no pretense to being objective. Except they do toss into some shit a few intelligent writers just to give some semblance to legitimacy. That’s the way things work, I’m afraid. Our side doesn’t own the Times. I wasn’t aware of this mess. I do suscribe and I will now let them know my opinion and the desire to end subscription after it ends.

Expand full comment

Also, busy actually being a President and mot just golfing and crying in front of cameras.

Apparently running a country is time consuming?

Also the NYT has been trash for 150 years. They used to report the whole Hitler thing would blow over.

Expand full comment

Won't give them the satisfaction and gravitas their pouting publisher so obviously craves.

Good.

Why should Biden be at the beck and call of the NYT's oligarchic head, when he does not even have a decent paper? Should Biden also be at Elon Musk's beck and call? Moscow Times? TASS? Putin is buddies with Hamas. Putin is buddies with Netanyahu! Putin is buddies with Iran. Do you see the people that are getting an edge on this? Not the people of any of their countries and it certainly has distracted everyone from Ukraine. Or, so Putin thought. Here is a YouTube recording of Katie Couric and Anne Applebaum's discussion organized by Big Tent. https://youtu.be/TjAXwkKJ3Fk?si=QIIQO-CojmYbveu5

Ms. Applebaum rightfully points out the role that Biden is playing in the Middle East is more nuanced than outsiders can see.

Expand full comment

Linda I was just thinking about what you wrote before I read it. Sulzberger is ready to grease the slide of fascism because of the pity party he is having for himself. Doesn’t respect have to be earned? Or be a two way street?

Expand full comment

He thinks his money will insulate him from the fall-out, he is contributing to.

Sulzberger thinks like a spoiled rich boy, which is unrealistic. Let him call Howard Stern and ask how he got a Biden interview. I am no longer suffering from his temper-tantrum because I no longer read his rag!

I don’t subscribe to that. If my business is chosen to be a vendor, I’ll be attending the democratic convention. I’ll observe from the inside. If the protests materialize on the streets of Chicago, then Biden could only hope for something real be happening caused by the loss of Roe.

Expand full comment

Don’t subscribe to what? Re-read what you wrote. Makes no sense.

Expand full comment

I could fix it but I’m too busy with other stuff. Thanks for pointing out.

I was 13 in 1968. Democrats lost the election for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the tendency of American voters to favor "tough talk" over thoughtful discourse.

Student protesters in the 1960s wanted the war to end because they didn't want to kill or be killed. They were not calling for the extermination of Vietnam.

If Trump even has a place on the ballot in November, it won't be because President Biden didn't play nice with the Times, but because too many of us are too stupid to get out of our own way.

The story about Sulzberger explained everything. That apple didn't fall far from the tree.

Let's hope the puppy killing VP wannabe is done although not much seems to phase the MAGA loving asswipes. The NYT should be putting disturbing news like this front and center but they could give two shits about all of the non-stop GOP wrongdoings of their cash cow. Just like CNN reporting that 55% saw Emperor Diaperload's presidency as favorable even after 1/6 and he is still in the lead among voters. How the hell is that even possible?

Expand full comment

That's what I think too. I don't believe it, %55 is way way off. More like %15 I would say. Average normal reasonable people who think of themselves as Republican DO NOT support trumpf anymore. Maybe in 2016 but not after Jan6. Even if they voted for him in 2020 his behavior after he lost appalled them. And I believe most of them are normal average people. It's just that the yahoos being the loudest and most visible make tfg's support seem magnified. His rally audiences have been shrinking, 2 pathetic protesters at his criminal trial, even FOX disparages him. CNN is full of bullshit or they're just plain idiot "journalist" poll takers. I'll show them my pole, which they can shove straight up their poll's ass.

IDK, tonight, Sunday, I watched CNN “The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper” It was the reporter with the Scottish accent reporting on misinformation, Trumpism, & Christian Nationalism. He started with a few Evangelical pastors who are trying to get their flock back to the real teachings of Jesus.

As you said, they are louder, but he profiled the J6 rioter who served time & is now running for the House & he’s downright scary!!

He went to a maga gathering in Las Vegas & talked to a few supporters, & man, those people are just unreachable & super committed.

You don’t want to know. I can’t get it out of my head.

With all the other crap going on, especially the treatment of women by the christofascist MAGAt Party formally known as the GOP, this puppy murdering bitch bragging about shooting her puppy in the face because she “hates that dog” is the last straw. Or at least it should be.

And the goat. Don’t forget that she also murdered a goat in the same fashion because it was smelly.

She is a serial murderer!

She will fit right in as Herr Dictator LDFF’s henchman.

Vote blue for god and country and puppies everywhere!

These people would take the nickels off their dead mother's eyes. Then kick a 3 legged dog and blame the dog. In her case, just shoot the fucking dog. That woman has more plastic in her face than a 3M plant.

And evidently, she is showing no remorse, rather she doubled down to defend her vile behavior by saying they killed three horses on their farm because.... it had to be done. Where is PETA in all this?

Expand full comment

No remorse. Doubling down. Raising money off of it.

And now we find out there are more? Three horses? Really?

I hope that someday she is executed by firing squad.

Does she have children that might have been attached to these animals?

And the puppy. I keep thinking about the puppy that was shot for……being a puppy.

A firing squad is too much trouble. Just drag her hideous ass to the gravel pit and shoot her in the fucking head.

"Noem responded by doubling down. “We love animals,” she said, “but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm. Sadly, we just had to put down three horses a few weeks ago that had been in our family for 25 years.” The governor also promised “more real, honest and politically incorrect stories that’ll have the media gasping”.

God, and we thought what's-her-name from Iowa was being all "rugged farm wife" talking about castrating pigs. Remember her?

Hoping she’s executed….can’t think of a more appropriate reciprocation. These nut cases are deadly monsters who threaten everyone who is not in their club. Time to exercise punishments!

Yes, her 8 year old daughter (at the time) asked where the goat was when she came home from school. I assume she got them the goat as a small, cute, pet.

Yeah she never heard of getting a vet to painlessly euthanize a sick animal?

I think they have made a statement, & a local humane society is urging LE to file charges.

PETA is almost as bad. How about the Humane Society? Probably doesn’t exist in SD though. But does anyone remember this?

And it’s a NYT article too.

I saw a comment on Twitter put up by one of the sane Republicans; he said Noem probably calls Trump Old Yeller. I thought that was hilarious! 😂 And if you take that theme just a little further, she’s not kind to stinky old goats either. He should be very afraid of her. 😁

Kristi Noem slaughtered a puppy. she fucking bragged about it in a book. Her admission of this confirms that there is no bottom to her profound ignorance.

That's what all maga would like to do to problematic mishandled things like the homeless, old people, etc just shoot them in the face in a ditch. Truly.

Yes. The reason we think that is because over and over that's what they've told us they want to do and are planning on how to do it.

Suggested reading: Miles Taylor's "Blowback"* on this topic. Miles is the author formerly known as "ANONYMOUS," who wrote "A Warning" in 2019, a year which seems like it happened decades ago.

Her ignorance and pathology. That dog and goat gunning down episode does not suggest a stable mind. Anger management must have failed for Kristi the puppy killer.

Gosh, my kids were untrainable. Never occurred to me to take them out to the dump and shoot them for ruining my day. They refused to march around cleaning up their messes, refused to do homework they thought was stupid (I was a teacher, I know stupid, the kids were right), refused to salute me when I came in the door, and would not hunt for slugs in the garden (even at 5 cents bounty apiece.). Here’s to my life: dogs, kids, spouses, grandkids, cousins, kids’ friends still swoop in, are untrained, and make messes and a racket and are hilarious.

I even rescued a German short haired hunting dog. Fletcher was gun shy and headed for the pound; a friend called, I took the dog. I found him a wonderful home with a bowhunter and mountain bike rider father-and-son team. Noem is a sissy. A sissy with a gun. And a fucking asshole.
