I’m completely sickened. Charges should be brought against those men and Abbot for depraved indifference to human life. Part of their prison sentences should be copying the poem on Ellis Island over and over for decades as they live in cells next to non white people.

The National Guard is problematic. HOWEVER, they can be recalled to go to some hot spot to assess and alleviate some shenanigans going on anywhere in the world. Perhaps 5 or so years on foreign soil would be salutary for them. Abbott has no say over regular military in Texas, after all. And his little private army would be so out of their depth that it is pitiful.

Expand full comment
un poco loco's avatar

You don't understand: Texas has its own private army that dates back to 1823, before there was even a Republic of Texas. They've acted as a border patrol from the beginning, but they've also been involved in a lot of other murderous shit. Mexicans call them Los Diablos Tejanos (for good reason.) The Texas Rangers have done some less-evil things over the years, like stopping the assassination of President Taft and the president of Mexico at the time, or taking out the Republic of Texas dipshits in the 1990s (without killing them all), but throughout their history, they've committed atrocities that far outweigh the good, like wiping out an entire border town whose citizens were Mexican, killing every male resident within, including the young and the old.

In the '30s, when the Dept of Public Safety was created, they became an elite force within DPS, which gives them some cover -- the Rangers are now law enforcement and investigate crimes, and who the regular Highway Patrol aspires to be. Their very existence as a unit is protected by law -- they can't be legally disbanded. The Rangers need to be seen for what they are: a well-trained, well-armed militia under the command of the governor.

Trump’s chief advisor in charge of torture, Stephen Miller, asserts the poem [on the Statue of Liberty] to which I think you refer, was a late add-on, and so he claims it bears no weight. Note: that poem (below**) was written by Emma Lazarus in 1883, while the Statue of Liberty, on which it was placed, was erected in 1886.

Of course Stephen Miller would never lie nor distort because George Washington is his idol, obviously. (cf https://www.amazon.com/Hatemonger-Stephen-Miller-Donald-White-Nationalist/dp/0062986716 )

This is beautiful!:

** THE NEW COLOSSUS

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus

November 2, 1883

Yes that’s the poem. How is Miller alive in this century? I thought all Hitler’s SS were dead by now. Must be another Dorian Gray.

Chris Rey's avatar

As you may know, the horrendous irony is that Miller is Jewish, the grandson of Holocaust survivors. You ask, from what 1930s time machine did Miller emerge from?

The following personality bio comes from https://www.amazon.com/Hatemonger-Stephen-Miller-Donald-White-Nationalist/dp/0062986716

“Radicalized as a teenager, Miller relished provocation at his high school in liberal Santa Monica, California. He clashed with administrators and antagonized dark-skinned classmates with invectives against bilingualism and multiculturalism. At Duke University, he cloaked racist and classist ideas in the language of patriotism and heritage to get them airtime amid controversies. On Capitol Hill, he served Tea Party congresswoman Michele Bachmann and nativist Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions.

Recruited to Trump’s campaign, Miller met his idol…”

Miller’s literally The Psychopath’s Psychopath.

‘Who knew what evil lurked in the hearts of men ? A copper, that’s who. After ten years you thought you’d seen it all, but the shadows always dished up more. You saw how close men lived to the beast. You realized that people like Carcer were not mad. They were incredibly sane. They were simply men without a shield. They’d looked at the world and realized that all the rules didn’t have to apply to them, not if they didn’t want them to.They weren’t fooled by all the little stories. They shook hands with the beast.’

Policeman Sam Vimes in Nightwatch by Terry Pratchett (2002).

Miller, Trump and MAGA zealots are not psychopaths. They have shaken hands with the beast. This was a free choice on their part. Only the enforcement of enlightenment progressivist Rule of Law can break them.

Expand full comment
Rebecca Elliott's avatar

Well, Miller is both right, and wrong. The plaque was not placed until 1903. HOWEVER, the poem itself was written in 1883, expressly to help pay for the Statue's pedestal, so has been part of it since construction began in France. One of those cases about upholding the word of the law, while breaking its spirit, as it were.
