for the record, I called Taylor Swift a "pop singer" only after googling "is taylor swift a pop singer?" because I didn't want to get it wrong and incur the wrath of the Swifties

Kay-El's avatar

You weren’t wrong to check. She started her career as a country singer which all MAGA types assumed she was their gal.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

google's official answer is "Her debut album Taylor Swift was a country hit. Then she released her 2nd album Fearless, a country-pop. And then her album Speak Now, was also a version of country-pop with Rock. That is how she is now a famous pop singer."

I wouldn't have known any of that if I hadn't looked it up.

Openly Fae's avatar

You know there's specifically a fandom for being a Swiftie Over Fifty? It's not too late. :p

MARTHA REDSECKER's avatar

Did not, but I am in it...I am 86 and call myself an OLD SWIFTIE, but I have always been a die-hard fan of hers. She is brilliant in so many ways, and talented beyond belief, and I am just happy to stay alive until to vote AGAIN for JOE and ALLL DEMS to save us from the orange hitler wannabee. If she helps to encourage vote registration is a BEAUTIFUL THING and will support her forever.

Louise's avatar

75 here. I always liked her but didn't really listen often. Once she started encouraging people to vote I found out she's an amazing person. Now, since the eras tour, I've learned more about her and all the generous charity she does. If I could vote for Joe twice I would!!

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

When Kesha was blacklisted by Sony, for filing charges against her producer for raping her, her contract kept her from working. Taylor anonymously sent her a very large amount of money to help her survive. Taylor's mother let it slip, or we would never have known.

MARTHA REDSECKER's avatar

Good for us, Louise...I don't listen to her songs but have heard enough to know she is SUPER TALENTED, so we'll appreciate her when we VOTE AGAIN for Joe! He's been a keeper since he stood with BARACK!

DA's avatar

You got that right!💙💙💙

MARTHA REDSECKER's avatar

LOVE THAT KIDDEN on the head of WHAT? Looks super fine dog type to me. Animals are so much smarter than human ones.

Rebecca Elliott's avatar

At 70, I have recently become one. Now, I always found her music perfectly pleasant, but, being semi-deaf, had missed most of the lyrics. When she hit the headlines over politics, I FINALLY looked up her lyrics, and fell hard into Swifty-dom!

P. J. Schuster's avatar

If you haven’t already seen it, look up the music video on YouTube of her song “Shake It Off” It is just so cute & self effacing. There’s even separate vids of the making of the video & she makes fun of herself

Rebecca Elliott's avatar

Headed there right now! Thanks!

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

She crossed over to Pop with her hit "Shake it off" a song about ignoring the haters. She became a huge Pop Star and left the Country crap her stage father forced her into.

RV maxima's avatar

Good to know. So educational this crowd!

Openly Fae's avatar

You're not officially a Republican country singer until you sing a song about marrying a family member.

meryl selig's avatar

And where 10 year olds get pregnant by their ministers

Lisa59's avatar

That's what MAGA rallies are, a dating opportunity for bigots and where married first cousins have their family reunions.

Openly Fae's avatar

You might be MAGA if you go on the pull at family reunions.

SPW's avatar

Don’t forget, you’ve got to ride on a train in a downpour on your way to prison for racing your truck to your dear, sweet mama’s bedside before she died.

Just canceled my subscription to the NY Times. The fawning, ass-kissing article by Rebecca Davis O'Brien that referred to Trump as "tan" was the last straw.

Don'tBlameTheDog's avatar

Was that the one gushing over his stamina? Hello NYT? It ain't fucking stamina. It's mania. Mania is a mental illness. Why do you want your children in a world where the mental case has the nuclear button?

ANTIFA Libbey Dem's avatar

It's also a symptom of Dementia since the brain is, essentially dying. Every diagnosed mental illness (Mania, depression, schizophrenia, mood swings, rage, personality disorder, etc) are demonstrated in someone with cognitive decline.

I am not a doctor. I am speaking from experience. My maternal grandfather died from Dementia and my mother has a form of it called Pick's Disease. trump is DEFINITELY showing symptoms of some form of Dementia.

meryl selig's avatar

Some form of dementia exacerbated by his deep personality disorders. But no! Idiocy like cable news and the Times portray the symptoms as signs of vitality.

Bill Lawrence's avatar

They are all bending over backward to prove that they are 'objective' and 'unbiased..' It's disgusting.

Sadly, I am not. I was ostracized by my family shortly after I got sober over 30 years ago. I was the first child that my mother had forgotten. That goes back further though. It didn't matter that I was trying to get better and change my life. I made my amends and they were accepted by all, but they snatched them back as soon as I turned around. I have accepted that. And I probably won't know when my mother passes. It's unfortunate, but I have did all that I am willing to do at this point.

I don't even know them anymore. My brother just died three weeks ago and I found out a week afterwards from a family member that lives out of state. My immediate family lives on the other side of town. My hands are clean and there is nothing I can do about their resentments however valid or invalid they are.

Chet Brandt's avatar

Having been sober now 23 years and counting I was not complete ostracized by my immediate family. But, the family I had married into( over 40 years ago) do not “trust” the newer me because I am not MAGA scum. These folks have their own issues and I can’t/ don’t even bother having a lucid conversation with them. The new version of me makes me some sort of “threat” to their political views. They just fail to realize I was ALWAYS a Dem …..I just smile, laugh to myself and try, which at times is extremely difficult, to keep my exposure to these people to a minimum.

Charlotte Thompson's avatar

How sad for you. What a shame that your family wants to engage in petty feuds. It sounds to me as though you took the high road. The loss is theirs.

I agree with you Donna. My own mother had dementia and when she was in the nursing home, I was around plenty of people with the same condition. Fugly orange definitely has it.

DA's avatar

I like your new word. Think mixed company could handle the new word, Charlotte??😂😂💙

ANTIFA Libbey Dem's avatar

Fugly has been around for a long time. I use it often in mixed company and people understand the meaning ( fugly-fucking ugly) completely. I think that it should be added to the Urban dictionary. 😆

Linda Fulcher's avatar

That's the one. I gagged when I read it. Enough.

un poco loco's avatar

I think there are drugs involved too, some sort of prescription stimulant. The right one can make you feel omnipotent and smart and in control of your whole life, whether that's real or not -- sounds exactly like the asshole to me. They can also be hugely addictive.

Jeremy's avatar

There was a comment back during the apprentice where someone said he loved snorting adderall and he got good quality meth from the bikers in NJ back then. He has all the tell tale amphetamine symptoms including shitting his pants. If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck it’s Dawney T strung out on meth.

It’s the methylated amphetamines that he loves to snort up his nose.

Welcome to the club. I canceled in early 2017, upset about Butter Emails, and the incredible idiocy of Maureen Dowd and Pope Ross Douthat, among others. (I miss Krugman, but not enough to help support the rest of them.) I have not regretted canceling as it seems things just keep getting worse there - at least on the editorial pages. It would appear they are in the tank for Republicans and Trump. I wonder if they understand they will be among the first people Trump and his christofascists put up against the wall. Apparently they think they will be the first people Trump has ever been loyal to in his long life. They should chat a little with some of the January 6 criminals now in prison instead of poorly educated Trump cultists in diners. Trump will not be a good little dementia patient like Reagan and let the oligarch's people run things for their benefit. The don't seem to understand that Trump is a genuine criminal who will have people who haven't properly admired him killed. Dead.

Openly Fae's avatar

Yeah this is not Hunter S. Thompson's generation of journalism. I'm actually a little surprised I haven't heard of Rachel Maddow grabbing the camera in both hands and going "Dear fellow journalists, if you help him win, he's still going to harass or kill you the moment you do anything but endlessly praise him."

Maybe they'd listen to her. More likely they'd label her deep state and assume she was trying to scare them away to increase her viewership.

Because our media no longer cares about truth or safety or rights. They think we're safe forever and all they need is the clicks and the cash.

You'd think an industry defined entitely by words and images would by association have at least a basic familiarity with history, dictators, and the press's role in dictatorships.

Lisa59's avatar

We are ruled by American Oligarchs. It shows up in our MSM and everywhere else for that matter. If the GQP win our news with look like a Fathers Know Best sitcom. So will our education system. Christian White Nationalism will be the foundation of all future laws. As it has been. But, on steroids.

SPW's avatar

Education system already in the shitter. Standardized testing and teaching to it stuck the knife in and twisted it. The bleeding out didn’t take long.

Lisa59's avatar

That's exactly what my friends who are teachers say. They taught them how to take tests. It's not hard to expose those vulnerabilities.

Cats 🐈🐈‍⬛'s avatar

Bubble kids only learn how to fill in a bubble on a test sheet. No critical thinking skills or knowledge about personal responsibility.

Openly Fae's avatar

This is the year America dies. The only question is how it will be reborn.

Lisa59's avatar

I don't know. It's just not us. This is global. The oligarchs are winning. How do we stop them? When so many voters want to be told what to do. They don't want to think for themselves. And then there's the fucking apathy. The other day a commenter was challenging me about Project 2025. Told me it was a Democratic rag magazine. And then laughed about it. This woman also laughed about women getting rape. Jesus H Christ! I told her she was dumber than a fucking doorknob. And blocked her.

I listen to Keith Olbermann's podcast (until he starts singing the Ode to Joy in the original German, anyway -- he CANNOT sing) and he's of the opinion that Rachel has become too cautious. They had a falling out (I know no details, def don't need to lol) -- but I'm thinking it's more like she's waiting for the best opportunity to go on the attack. I hope. A world that successfully shut up Rachel Maddow is not somewhere I want to live.

Mary's avatar

I agree. I also watch Deadline Whitehouse and it’s their commentators that I really like. Yes you could say they lean left, but really leaning left to me, is leaning into decency, higher standards, less corruption, less lying, concern for the world, climate change and all of its people and problems.

P. J. Schuster's avatar

Rachel did a full 30-35” monologue at her show opening this Monday after the Trump crap about NATO. It was excellent, a history lesson & future consequences of LDFF take. If you missed it see if it’s on YT

Openly Fae's avatar

I subscribe to the Guardian and to the Philadelphia Inquirer, which has a great columnist, Will Bunch.

Sharon C Storm's avatar

I love The Guardian. It is the most fair of all the periodicals I read.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

I also love the Guardian. It is sane, clear headed, very well written, and gives a European perspective that is a relief after dealing with the bullshit spewing from the American media.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Ah, thank you for the explanation. WaPo just hired a National Review propagandist, so I expect they'll get even worse, also.

Is Pravda(Truth)still alive in Russia?

un poco loco's avatar

Sort of -- I don't remember details any more, but at some point after the USSR broke up, a couple of other organizations acquired it (or just started using it, maybe) -- I think one was a Russian Communist organization, and the other wasn't even Russian. Now Pravda's back in business (at least online) as Pravda.ru -- and when I checked on that to be sure it was still there, the FIRST pravda url that came up used the Ukraine top-level domain, .ua. So Pravda is apparently also a pseudo-Ukrainian publication now, too. Very highly truthful still, also. lol

Karen Livolsi's avatar

I canceled about 18 months ago. So glad to have that constant stream of B.S. gone. If they publish anything out of the ordinary, I’m sure I’ll hear about it. Other than that unlikely possibility, I don’t feel like I’m being treated as a “mark” every time I renewed a subscription.

How is Trump still alive or not actively in an unknown detention facility for his domestic terrorism rhetoric? I’m honestly surprised there haven’t been any attempts on his life at this point…I can factually say that my time in the Marines, there were attempts by active duty personnel even to take out certain people. This was kept outside of the media and individuals were detained, convicted, and sent to barred facilities. Here we have a man doing the same thing but where’s the handcuffs?

Arguably there is legal grounds now for any whack job to grab a mic and say let’s nuke America home holding the button up to shouting cultists and now he can’t be arrested immediately, because the government has allowed Trump to…

I’m sorry but this Marine’s leash from her therapist and the hospital staff locally gets really tight when the same thoughts and words are mentioned.

Unrelated but important when where there be an international sign up form for the Palestinian defense coalition, a volunteer military of former service members and veterans who are taking the fight to the IDF?! 2500 Marines could easily Secure Gaza and make it an IDF and Israeli occupier free zone. Let Trump visit Netanyahu and crater the palace! Too much, see above about the double standard of free speech our “incompetent leaders” have set. Then again play stupid games and elect the mob bosses, degenerates, sex traffickers, and the high-school hooker (Beetlejuice Boebert) to power, you win stupid prizes.
