A lot of his supporters are psychologically broken rather than stupid. Like him, they've never learned how to cope with *any* uncomfortable feeling and instead turn all of them into rage. That said, tens of millions of Americans (myself among them) are rightly enraged about how we've been screwed financially over the past 40 years; it has cost us jobs, professions, a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging, our health, the finan.+psych. security of owning a home (renting leads to perpetual anxiety in this era of price-gouging landlords), and lots of other bad stuff. I, the child of two FDR Dems, would never in a thousand yrs vote for a GOP, but I'm angry / anxious / depressed almost all the time, and I fully understand why so many people who've been broken by this country are dealing with their unhappiness in a different way. I don't condone it, but I get it.
I think we'll start devising solutions after we grasp that his supporters are motivated more by their psychological wounds than by their modest intellect or insufficient education.
And all of those symptoms are directly connected to Reagan screwing over the poor, and defunding public education, and otherwise stacking the deck, to give the rich more wealth, and blaming black people as to why the poor acould not get ahead. And yet they merrily continued to vote for the very assholes keeping them down.
I really was responding to Trump saying in the video “who believes this crap” about whatever imagined grievance. I do understand what you’re saying, though and I don’t disagree. I’m fed up too and they aren’t the only ones suffering, but there are plenty of people who don’t take their anger out in bigoted, racist ways. That’s where ignorance comes in.
I thoroughly agree. Our elected representatives have allowed a lot of this mess to happen, either intentionally, or just by not being assertive enough, not fighting back enough for the people they are supposed to represent. We also must share the blame for not paying attention & staying as highly engaged as we are now that things have gone to hell.
When Reagan was elected I renewed my German passport, which I had taken for granted. What I did not take for granted is my knowledge of people fleeing when they do no longer feel safe in their own country. So, since I technically have 2 countries I have made sure to have options. Still, I regularly write to my US reps, and have written some German ones as well. I am engaged and I do not deserve this, neither do any of the people that I am reading here, who all seem engaged. Now we are also old enough to know better too. I do not know what to do to put a bee in the Democratic party's bonnet so that they get livelier campaigns, and take on the issues that they are supposedly standing for. It certainly won a mom in a southern state, which I cannot remember a seat when she took on abortion as her platform.
