I remember as a kid in Elementary school reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and after that the Lord's Prayer. Yuk.
Even as a Catholic school kid in the 1960s, I would always say, "... one nation under gawd.... with liberty and justice for some."
I just left out the тАЬunder godтАЭ part.
They could't make me say, it I just stayed silent. It felt too much like indoctrination to me, being forced to chant something in unison. That was the pledge only, Madelyn Murray OHair was doing her much needed work shuting that other nonsense down.
