DR Darke's avatar

Democrats have been using that excuse to do nothing for the last forty-five years. I didn't believe it then, and I sure don't believe it now.

I loathe the Republican Party, but one thing they're excellent at is being activist—which too many people mistake for "principled". If the Democratic Party pushed legislation that supported the working and middle classes (higher tax rates for billionaires, a single-payer option for those still not covered by the ACA and those who would choose that over privatized profit-driven healthcare, pro-choice nationally, marriage equality and trans rights, tuition-free higher education, repairing the torn-to-shreds social safety net), it wouldn't matter if they lost AT FIRST, because voters would see they were standing by what they claim to believe in, rather than using that as an excuse to blackmail us into sending them money for doing nothing!

You're not "waiting for the leak to reveal itself"—you're standing on the deck of a boat that's already underwater debating if you could do something!

But JK can't see that she has identical lack of tolerance issues in real life.

I never liked the Harry Potter series for any reason other than it got my students reading. Given that there is a scarcity of female main characters in books, you would think the single mother of a girl could have made a girl the primary character. Also, the two books I recognized her as borrowing from, The Witches by Roald Dahl https://www.awesomebooks.com/book/9780241578179/the-witches/used

and The Witch Family by Eleanor Estes

https://www.awesomebooks.com/book/9780152026103/the-witch-family/used

are way, way better. So, although I forced myself to slog through 2.5 of the books because I wanted to know what my students were reading, I am not a fan of the books or the author long before her transphobic controversy.

You know who does make it a top issue, all the time? Republicans. You may support distancing or throwing LGBTQ+ people under the bus because the media and opposition won't stop bringing it up, but others don't. And it seems very naive to think there aren't objectively harmful policies being supported or implemented to harm LGBTQ+ people, right now. Having come out as an L in the mid-70s, I've seen feminism become straighter and straighter and lesbians, who were a major force in grassroots feminism of the late '60s and well into the '80s, disappeared into "LGBTQ+." While we're at it, "gender" has been conflated with "sex," and people actually go around thinking that gender is binary and/or innate. It sometimes feels like we're back in the 1950s. I don't agree with JK Rowling on everything, but she gets it in a way that too liberals and progressives don't.

Elon Musk is suggesting that hundreds of thousands of Americans are not genuinely outraged, heartbroken, or morally activated, but rather on someone’s payroll to go protest. (He wishes he could pay people to march for MAGA.)

Let’s take the conservative number of 200,000 paid protesters.

Assume they each earn $15/hour (which would be generous for a conspiracy payroll, but sure, let’s treat them like union actors). Let’s say they protest 5 hours per event. That’s $75 per protester, per protest.

200,000 x $75 = $15,000,000 per event. Now let’s imagine even just 10 events in a few months. $15,000,000 x 10 = $150 million. And these protests are only going to get larger and larger.

Maybe people are showing up because they actually care. Maybe they’re alarmed by his glee while destroying our government, tanking public and humanitarian services, trying to steal our social security, and palling around with authoritarian maniacs.

He was, and a damn fine looking one, too. Too bad what he did to his face.

Learning curve my ass. He was a fucking Major, ok? When I got my TS as a dumb Ensign it was pounded into my head that the reward for giving even CONFIDENTIAL information to someone without need-to-know was an all expense paid trip to Leavenworth.

Today's koan:

If your ego is larger than your earnings report, but smaller than your moral compass, are you still a visionary—or just a cautionary tale with a rocket fetish?

Self-care tip from the Monastery of Madness: When the world is run by the tantrum-prone and the tactless, practice radical stillness. Or scream into a compostable pillow. Either works.

May your feed be ever free of Space Nazis and your ketamine come with a warning label: Not a substitute for insight.
