Yes, indeed. Part of our problem is also how we recognize effort by children. Now some schools want all students to “graduate” whether they’ve passed the rigorous tests required for a high school diploma. Talk about being tone deaf.
You’re looking at changing something that will take some 18 years to do on an individual basis. It doesn’t just start with school, but how young children are encouraged to develop social skills, develop an appreciation learning through books even when parents read to them in their toddler years. If you don’t help develop their thirst for knowledge, you end up with kids who don’t want to learn and find school boring and a waste of time.
That's not my experience--the school I taught at was very intentional about teaching basic civics, and is continuing to be. It is in the public school system. This gives one hope.
I live in Louisiana and we have a brand new MAGA governor who is ripping and shredding government as we've always known it, heading . to changing the state constitution, has already changed voting so that you have to identify with a party to vote and can only vote for who you've identified with. Is taking over the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans for two years, which means probably longer. He's going to take every right this city has away from it if he can. Louisiana is officially now a red MAGA state. New Orleans is an oasis, for now, in the midst of MAGA land. This guy is all-in on Trump.

I don't pay attention to polls. They are historically unreliable. Biden's fund raising event at Radio City Music Hall yesterday brought in $25 mil. The RNC and the blobs campaign are bleeding money with no sign of recovery. This is what gives me hope. The Biden campaign said that over a quarter of that money from last night was from small donors.
I'd advise ignoring those polls. They are notoriously bad, almost all of them. They can be so easily skewed to say whatever will get the polling organization the most attention. I track small-money donors, instead.
I don't want to jinx things but a whole lot of elections have shown these bastards ahead and then they lose. And it's always a shock. So I'm going to keep worrying about this because I'm superstitious and you want to fly with me because I'm quite sure the plane stays in the air because I worry and keep it up. I will admit I am not a fan of police. Just Wednesday while walking on the sidewalk 2 Colorado officers shouted “fucking tranny” at me and drove away laughing. I’ve been unlawfully detained and beaten because I’m trans, but not killed because I am white and I am aware of this simple fact. But the veteran in me feels for the stone faced officers pictured behind Trump, thinking “I want to kill this man”. Guarantee the Marines on security detail thought the same thing from 2016-2020.
Personally if police want their image back, the ones who are not the racists attacking civil rights need to be protesting en masse. When my husband was driving through town a few months ago, he saw a disabled veteran asking for donations. A situation like that is a disgrace and should not exist in this allegedly "great" country.

The detectives did locate him and allegedly interviewed him. But they didn't get the bones back and when I requested they do so immediately, they claimed they no longer knew where he was.
I do a great deal of writing and am an artist as well. Without being able to use these skills, that took some time to regain, I would have been truly lost.

Thank you, Nightmaher, for your kindness. The whole thing was a nightmare of epic proportions. As one example, someone said they had her fingerbone on his keychain. The detectives did locate him and allegedly interviewed him. But they didn't get the bones back and when I requested they do so immediately, they claimed they no longer knew where he was.
I do a great deal of writing and am an artist as well. Without being able to use these skills, that took some time to regain, I would have been truly lost.

Trump saw an opportunity to grab some screen time while Biden was touting his fundraiser. Maybe he offered out of the goodness of his heart, to make a guest appearance at the slain officer's wake. I'm sure it was a given that there would be press present. Trump's attempt to portray grief and empathy was ludicrous. The slain officer deserved respect, not a "subdued" Trump presser.
