I stayed for a while. As a product manager, there was a community that was worth hanging out for, but in December 2022 when Elon played asshat to journalists covering his hypocrisy on the ElonJet account, I just logged out.

About 3 months later I logged back in to see if *perhaps* it had calmed down.

Nope, I was inundated with rather graphic porn, and the worst fucking ads. So I deleted my account. I knew that was where I would end up, but I will admit I am sad, as the community I had there has been blown up, and it doesn't seem that it has reconstituted anywhere else.

Thanks Jeff. Not that anyone here needs a reminder, however pretty much everyone mentioned by @JeffTiedrich would be the first group of a*holes to comment after a previous or next mass shooting to tell us "now is not the time to politicize this tragedy."

Instead, every semi-human who makes big bucks selling conspiracies to the willfully ignorant, and those who are the true believers, America's talking horses with a microphone and an internet connection -is off demanding the resignation of anyone with a (D) after their name.

It's a serious reminder as to why any meaningful democracy requires a well-educated, well-informed, and engaged society. Not just a bunch of people rabidly foaming while watching Fox 'News' telling them who to hate and blame for their narrow little lives. Anything to keep from picking up a book.

Thanks Jeff.. all these MAGAS have left is hate, fear and conspiracy.. they sound as if they are all barking mad hatters. I’m glad you posted Alex Jones, American certified nut job.. a few days ago Alex had a broadcast with Victor Soloyov, the head propagandist for Russian state TV.. my question is why? Why haven’t MSM picked up on this? Why is Jones spouting Putin talking points to his audience of nut bags? Well, at least in Budapest last night there was a huge demonstration against Donald’s good buddy and dictator wannabe Orban.. Have a great day Jeff and fellow travelers.

Expand full comment
steve robertshaw's avatar

Here's the problem - the likes of Alex Jones and his ilk mostly have a small audience (relatively speaking) of true believers who are simply lost causes. They're mostly just broadcasting into thin air or the digital ether equivalent. So anytime a media site or network with a large audience publicizes these morons, it gets picked up by all the other major media in a race to the bottom (for entertainment ratings) and makes whatever nonsense was spewed into a "story" that competes for viewers/readers attention with the actual REAL stories being reported. Results in an even dumber and more ignorant national audience and will absolutely peel off a few more of them from believing the truth.

Expand full comment
Megan Ross's avatar

Unfortunately that's small audience is full of a bunch of very dangerous people. Alex Jones seems to really attract the crazies.

Blatant racism. That is what the election in 2016 brought us. The fact that a man who was once sued by the U.S. Government for housing discrimination rose to the highest office in the land, meant it wasi fine for everyone to take their white hoods out of the closet. I'm sorry to say this about the country I love; but racism is in our country's DNA. The difference today is that people get away with being obvious about it. When I was growing up, especially if you went to an east coast liberal college; you had little idea who the racists were.

Didn't know the history of the ship, but other real news outlets reported it lost power prior to the crash. It was also reported that the captain radioed an SOS and explained the situation to the harbormaster, who informed the MD authorities, who then shut down the ends of the bridge before anyone else could cross it. The last time I checked, the first responders were still in search and rescue mode, so they must think some of those missing are still alive. But that info is a bunch of hours old now.

As for the MAGAts, well, it's becoming harder to fault them for thinking the way they do. After all, if you're only going to have one "news" source, and that source feeds you bullshit all day, then I expect becoming a mushroom is inevitable.

Expand full comment
un poco loco's avatar

One news source pointed out that even though the harbormaster had almost no time to act, they did manage to clear the bridge of the traffic so the only people left on it were workers who had helped clear it (6 of whom were still missing the last I heard) -- it could have been MUCH worse.
