I think it’s probably safe at this point to say the rest of the world knows (v. thinks) we’ve lost our fucking minds!

International airports have signs warning against travel to the USA. Yes it has gotten to that point.

It's getting worse than Nazi Germany and the 1775 attitude of GOP is "we're all fine". UGH

Expand full comment

Actually no we are not to Nazi Germany just yet. That was unimaginable. If you went to a bakery to buy a loaf of bread you gave the salute and "Heil Hitler" upon entering and again when leaving. Everyone spied on everyone else, thousands were arrested for nothing,.

But we're well on our way.

I keep on going back to that David Bowie song from "The Falcon and the Snowman"....."This is not America." Also Trent Reznor's "I'm Afraid of Americans".

I swear if my husband and I had the means and resources, we'd be peacing out of this country in a fucking heartbeat.

Same here. If we can make it happen, we will. Now to decide where to go....

We are quite a few years away (10 for me, 17 for my husband) from being able to collect on SS! It's really a matter of money now and the fact that at least I live in a very blue city that's in a fairly blue state.

I’ve mentioned Costa Rica to my husband several time half joking. I’m not joking any longer. We have the means to move Mom, our son’s families, and probably a couple of my sisters. I wake up every morning thinking I like Joe Biden, but he’s not going to live forever. We like our state, but I’m resolved to not pay taxes that directly go into billionaires pockets.

We're there too -- if it was just me and my husband, we'd be out of here. Texas is a shithole country all on its own. But we've got a daughter and daughter-in-law and granddaughters and a grandson who are various shades of non-white and/or non-straight, and as long as we can provide any cover, we will. As nice as it would be to get the hell out of Dodge, it's not an option right now.

I fully understand. They'd have to pay me to live in TX! I have a tri-racial 21-yr old grandson who lives in TN with all those crazy rednecks and gun lovers and I worry about him. He formerly lived in Charlotte NC and I think he was probably safer there. If he marries an Asian girl, their kids would be all 4 races! I keep praying for everyone with mixed race families especially. There are still way too many white supremacists in USA. When we finally get enough younger people to vote Dem and more of the old white-haired guys in Congress either retire or die, we may have a decent country again. IF they don't manage top kill off the majority of the rest of us first. Hang in there. My sister-in-law visited Costa Rica and she said it's beautiful. Best wishes to everyone on here.

Same here. I live in the French Quarter and a few days ago I heard a really loud angry argument going on in the street close by. In the past I would have opened my front door with cell phone in hand to see whether I should call the police, an ambulance or if it was just your ordinary, run-of-the mill set-to. And for the first time, my first thought was: I hope nobody has a gun and shoots and it comes through my house and kills me while I'm just sitting there listening to it. This is becoming Murder Nation. I could go a number of places out of the country and more people are now thinking about it and making actual plans now than ever in my long life I've heard. This is not sustainable. "We can;t and aren't going to do anything about it."

Expand full comment

Maybe all the gun lovers in Congress will manage to shoot each other. The hatred against all races must be at an all-time high. We're going to lose money on tourism in all states if we don't stop all the shootings. No one in their right mind would want to visit here.. Some visitors from other countries have already been killed by shooters. Not a good message to draw in tourists.

Insanity. I saw that college bound students are choosing schools based on the state’s political climate and views on things like gun laws. Hopefully we’re reaching the point where kids affected by gun violence will vote dirtbags like Abbott out of office.

We have, indeed, lost our fuckin' minds. I've been protesting wars and other crap since I was a pre-teen in the early 60's. I've been steadfast and optimistic. Now I realize it's hopeless, and all I want to do is scream into the void. Thanks, Jeff, for showing me I'm not alone. It helps a bit.

Recently on a far right message board someone posted in large bold caps, their fear and outrage that Biden might ban semi-automatics and possibly all guns. I would like to address one specific gun issue that is rarely discussed. Toddler deaths caused by parents guns.

In their twisted minds their right to own a gun far outweighs my child's right not to be shot dead in his classroom, home and or anywhere. TBS, how do these gun zealots react to the ongoing deaths of toddlers caused by gun-owning parents whose loaded guns are left in their homes and pickup trucks? How often do we read about the five-year-old who found her father's gun and accidentally shot and killed herself? How about the seven-year-old who killed her grandmother in the back seat of the car after lifting the gun from her mother's purse? Or the three-year-old whose father placed her on his bed watching TV while he jumped into the shower? He forgot to remove his gun from his backpack, which was also on his bed. He found his daughter dead after she accidentally shot herself after finding his gun. These stories occur almost daily, especially in Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Missouri and other gun loving red states. Ironically, these gun lovers are also pro-life often referring to pro-choice Democrats as "baby killers."

Why is the life of an unborn fetus more valuable to them than a young child killed by gun violence? How would a gun loving NRA zealot respond knowing a toddler killed himself or his sibling with his mother's loaded gun? Interesting food for thought.................

I guess no one has asked them ( how they feel after a gun owner has a dead child to consider). The closest recommendation I could give is an HBO/MAX documentary on guns from perhaps 10 years ago. The footage was thru 3/4 months of accidental & senseless shooting gun deaths but used about 90% news footage & other media so basically let the story tell itself. Quite sobering gun deaths were 35-38k a year then. Up alot since.

Thank you. With your work in domestic violence I can see where the tittle would have been a easy reference. Also, it really is the base of the "gun problem" which includes mental illness & mainly the male psyche using rape, fists law & legislation or easily purchased guns for control and power. The prism of this dysfunction has many shades of refraction of our religion & history.

For sure we are way overdue for change.

I understand people voice the completely normal desire to move from this craziness to somewhere more reasonable. But I am a citizen and not ready to concede. This is our country, too! And I would miss it iwas gone too long. I loved Paris, not enough $$ for that except to visit. Loved Portugal & Spain and probably could make that work...

Although, I am in the 4th quarter time wise, I can't give-up and will continue to fight back in any & all ways possible that I can muster.

Ammosexual, excellent!! I also like Thom Hartmann 's Morbidly rich or wealthy.

Both have a nice ring to them. I concur absolutely required viewing along with what I think that might wipe those sleazy & smug looks right off their porcine faces; what trauma surgeons see every day from the AR-15s on small bodies in particular.

I can't believe Texas is going to train children to dress gunshot wounds. Could it be the first responders are just as afraid as the cops, and this is the result? This is their best idea? WTF?!

This is insanity.

A few years ago, a school in Lehigh Valley, PA toyed with the idea of arming kids with rocks so they could throw them at the shooter if he/she made it into the classroom. I called the school to make sure what I read was true. It was. A few days later I read they scraped the idea.

These people are crazy.

It’s everywhere you look. It’s an every corner and out in the open day after day after day and year after year after year. We have a complete and total gun mania that has swept this country is clear that many of those guns are in the hands of some very deranged people, irrational people, angry people, dangerous people! When I was looking for articles about gun mania, I too googled the topic only to find well over 50 entries, most of which were gun shooting games -where gun obsessed youth and adults ( likely unbalanced ) go to pummel their opponents with gunfire, feeding their fetishes for guns, blood, chaos, and death.

This is so fucking sick!

Maybe instead of putting effort into passing an Equal Rights Amendment, we should pass an Equal Life Amendment. Ban assault and assault like weapons. Ban possession of guns capable of holding more than 5 rounds unless you are currently a member of law enforcement and have passed a psycological test.

That may not be enough, but it should cover most things. A 5 shot hand gun is enough for protection. Though it won't stop people from shooting kids pressing their doorbell, it may make them think.

Expand full comment

A 5 shot gun will never be enough for most gun lovers. It is just like money. There 2 kind of people regarding money ( this from financial professional planning retirement & 'wealth mgnt') those that plan for enough funds typically for goals, retirement, etc and are fine with the result. And the other kind, where there was never enough

Examples; millionaires that "need" more millions & ditto w/ Billionaires.

Same w/ guns. Some are ok with a few and others that would have an Amory only means they still need more.

Both are a sickness.
