I was going back and forth with a MAGA on Twitter (X). It was like we were talking about two completely different Americas. The fact that people are unable to distinguish between fact and fiction and real and fake is very disturbing. They see exactly what I see and despite evidence of fact, they believe the opposite. On any given day I have several ideas about the answer to this question.
Today I am going with: trump is the antichrist.
It may seem improbable because he is so stupid, ugly, and well, utterly disgusting. Which means there must be some sort of supernatural phenomena going on. I don’t remember that the antichrist was predicted to be smart, though it has been half a century since I read Revelations.

Yes. I know. I think that the real answer is that the MAGAts are angry, resentful, and somewhat selfish/self-centered people who feel they are not getting their due. They feel that the world is against them. They are not very thoughtful, logical, or educated people. And by “educated” I mean the ability to think critically and the willingness to understand the inherent bias of all “information” coming their way, as well as a solid understanding of history. MAGAts lack these skills. What trump does for them is to provide a steady diet of “it’s not your fault, it’s their fault” which stokes their anger and bigotry and their sense that these “others” are stealing from them and must be crushed. This in turn leads to a high adrenaline state. Turns out that adrenaline is addicting*. So they need their daily (hourly, minute by minute, every single second of every single day) fix. And trump and his machine crank it out for them to the point where they are incapable of distinguishing what is real from what is propaganda.
Then of course there are those who stand to benefit from a Grifter in Chief. They have different motivations: money and power. They also have no soul as they truly do not care about the damage to the democracy, people’s lives, or the planet, just as long as trump enables them to amass fortunes and fame.
*Google adrenaline addiction and you will see that this is in fact a real thing. It is in the medical literature. As a physician, I had a high level stressful job for decades. I thought it was “normal” When I retired I realized that I was filling up my time and packing my days with stuff because I didn’t know any other way to live. Apparently I had been an adrenaline addict for many years. Fortunately, since adrenaline addiction was getting a lot of press at the time, I had an Ah Ha moment and changed my behavior. Like an addict however, I always have to be on guard. Especially since I can make my own drug of choice right there in my own adrenal glands!

I know I probably sound like a broken record, but having a crooked AG who has actually been indicted for the almost 10 years he's been in office and a power-mad gov who thinks it's great fun to kill migrants as gruesomely as possible is NOT because the majority of Texans wanted them in office; it's because fucking Tom Delay fucked us all over in 2002 (with W's help.) Hell, those guys make Sid Miller look middle-of-the-road.
Gerrymandering is just the beginning: if you can maintain control over the running of a county (and because of the way the districts are mapped -- THANKS, FUCKING TOM DELAY!! -- rural counties have WAY more representation than urban areas) you can exert control over who gets elected. Texas does the same shit the other red-controlled states are doing: "purging" voters who look like they might vote liberal; selectively "losing" voter registrations instead of recording them; shutting down most of the polling places in areas with more liberal voters, etc.
We already have some great liberal elected officials. If we can ever tilt the scales back so anyone who's NOT a right-wing scumbag has anything close to an equal voice in who runs the state, the next Ann Richards will have a chance to do her thing. Otherwise, even the original Ann Richards would be out of luck.

Under so many TV news accounts about Trump's trial and Congressional hearings I see so many MAGA responses and hardly any comments from anyone else. It might be good for readers to see not everyone agrees with the red wave of comments.
I was going back and forth with a MAGA on Twitter (X). It was like we were talking about two completely different Americas. The fact that people are unable to distinguish between fact and fiction and real and fake is very disturbing. They see exactly what I see and despite evidence of fact, they believe the opposite. I blame Fox and others who intentionally lie to their viewers. If MAGA gets what they want, we'll never know what's real or not. Like in Russia. I ended it by telling him the back and forth is pointless and to have a nice life in the trump bubble, or something like that. It is so frustrating.
I agree that Fox News is largely to blame -- many in the south rely on it for their news and so get a very warped view. And it is really frustrating. I also have not had much luck changing folks' mind -- I am writing large for the many people who are reading the threads and hoping to reach a few or assure them they are not alone. Although I point my bony finger at the US, Canada isn't much better really, but I still find there is something different between our two cultures that I still haven't been able to put my finger on... other than our predominant characteristic of wanting to be 'our brother's keeper' .

Today I am going with: trump is the antichrist.
It may seem improbable because he is so stupid, ugly, and well, utterly disgusting. Which means there must be some sort of supernatural phenomena going on. I don’t remember that the antichrist was predicted to be smart, though it has been half a century since I read Revelations.

Yes. I know. I think that the real answer is that the MAGAts are angry, resentful, and somewhat selfish/self-centered people who feel they are not getting their due. They feel that the world is against them. They are not very thoughtful, logical, or educated people. And by “educated” I mean the ability to think critically and the willingness to understand the inherent bias of all “information” coming their way, as well as a solid understanding of history. MAGAts lack these skills. What trump does for them is to provide a steady diet of “it’s not your fault, it’s their fault” which stokes their anger and bigotry and their sense that these “others” are stealing from them and must be crushed. This in turn leads to a high adrenaline state. Turns out that adrenaline is addicting*. So they need their daily (hourly, minute by minute, every single second of every single day) fix. And trump and his machine crank it out for them to the point where they are incapable of distinguishing what is real from what is propaganda.
Then of course there are those who stand to benefit from a Grifter in Chief. They have different motivations: money and power. They also have no soul as they truly do not care about the damage to the democracy, people’s lives, or the planet, just as long as trump enables them to amass fortunes and fame.
*Google adrenaline addiction and you will see that this is in fact a real thing. It is in the medical literature. As a physician, I had a high level stressful job for decades. I thought it was “normal” When I retired I realized that I was filling up my time and packing my days with stuff because I didn’t know any other way to live. Apparently I had been an adrenaline addict for many years. Fortunately, since adrenaline addiction was getting a lot of press at the time, I had an Ah Ha moment and changed my behavior. Like an addict however, I always have to be on guard. Especially since I can make my own drug of choice right there in my own adrenal glands!
MAGA includes those human failures whose cultural incestors had slaves taken away from them. So, victims forever.
