Absolutely. The man was a genuine hero. Ought to be statues to such as he.

That's way better than having to look at Nathan Bedford Forrest on a horse.

Especially that acid tripping one, in Nashville.

un poco loco's avatar

that was exactly the one I had in mind... :)

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

I thought so! It is like they were sculpting a gargoyle's face, and got that commission and stuck it on.

Suzanne Gaudette Way's avatar

We had to drive by that big eyesore regularly. What it represented was horrific but on top of that it was ugly. The expression was wild and crazy…. that makes sense.

RV maxima's avatar

Indeed. The quoted comment, " none of us were ever out of the country, we saw, we learned". Excuse me if this is not exact, I lost the reference page. But that sentiment is and was what people in this country needed then and now. We, as a country have never been invaded. But what if you were able to open your mind and understand what that meant? We could use a dose of that reality now as Europe is under threat and everyone there from England to Ukraine know what exactly that means and why the Putin propaganda is exactly that. But, no instead we have useful idiots so willing to listen and believe. With their $$ hands out no less. The GOP, today? Old Ronnie would never have believed it. But than, he thought the job was done when the wall came down...

How many here went to college on Fulbright Grant's? That came after the fellowships, etc. I believe. But I was happy to receive it, made a difference and so much better than student loans.

Senator Fulbright-what a Rockstar he was. What do we get out of Arkansas these days, Huckabees,oh maybe the equal of Huckleberrys. Truly sad.

I just got my copy of Andy Borowitz's book "Profiles In Ignorance" and it's a doozy. No BS. No satire. No name-calling (except when quoting other's statements)-- and it occured that you two should meet. If you have, and that would not be a mind-bender, you probably should meet. At any rate, I am happy to support both of you.

Thanks for your involvement in telling the truth, we are surely in need of as much of that as we can get.

The saddest part of all this is the still persuasive ignorance that Trump and his ilk have damaged and continue to damage our country with. The dumbing down of America would be much worse and could be much worse, except for all of our efforts to bring the country back to some semblance of sanity and truth. Thanks.

I will have to check it out!

At one time way back when he who shall not be named was in the oval office, I tried to keep track of all the people Putin had a beef with, who died under mysterious circumstances. And still they think Putin is a great guy and Russia is a great country. They don't have a border problem! They don't give rights to gays and trans people! Well, the border is only a problem if you want to get the hell out of there. And nobody has rights over there! It's not just LGBTQ people! The murder of Novotny should set off some alarms for these folks, but if you asked them about Novotny, they would just say: WHO?

That's no lady!'s avatar

It's the book the world needed. No need for satire, the reality is wild enough.

I couldn't get past the pay wall but did note, with no little irony, the byline that Wapo still uses..."Democracy dies in darkness".

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

ok, edited my comment so that the WaPo article is now a "gift link" that everyone can read.

KL Pierce's avatar

We need to take turns gifting articles that matter as more and more folks unsubscribe from legacy media.

LORI D's avatar

I did unsubscribe but when they offered me a cheap deal I went back to WaPo only because of Vladimir Kara-Murza. He posted something a few days back, and then suddenly his comrade Alexi is dead. My guess is it will turn out to be one of those special Russian heart attacks.

Stranger Than Friction's avatar

Think about dumping WaPo AGAIN (and tell 'em why as you do so) and support The Guardian instead.

LORI D's avatar

I told them the first time and then came back. I'm weak. But I shouldn't have renewed because now it just makes me mad most days. I did cancel so it can't auto -renew next year. I do like the Guardian.

Jeff, I first discovered and followed you on the original Twitter, for your intelligently scathing wit. When it went X I found you again here and became a paid subscribed.

Oh, the rewards! Today, you OUTDID

yourself by pointing out Comer’s ONLY amazing accomplishment (sadly, at taxpayer expense)- proving Hunter’s “ginormous cock”. I burst out laughing and scared the cats.

That alone was worth the $5.a month.

Comer made a legend of Hunter and that fact will make trump jealous as hell!

I am grateful that still no one has murdered our presidential candidates in prison or with defenestration, or made up reasons why they cannot run. Even if Trump deserves to be in jail, so many say, "let the voters decide." I do not agree with him not being prevented from running, but when I see what happened to Alexander Navalny and wonder what will happen to Boris Nedezhdin.

https://www.npr.org/2024/02/08/1230179972/russia-anti-war-candidate-rejected

Even Tucker Carlson did not risk defenestration when he interviewed Putin.

un poco loco's avatar

I don't know -- Putin doesn't seem too impressed by him. (Who knew there was anything about that monster I'd agree with? -- Putin, I mean. Haven't found any common ground with Tucker.) Probably a good thing for Tucker that Putin has an immediate use for him, in spite of trashing him in the media.

When these holier-than-thou MAGA Shit-wads can scream bloody murder about Fanii and $100 and how she pays her bills, then have nothing to say about Clarence Thomas and his financial 'irregularities',or Dipshit Donnie and his hush money, or Jared and his $2 Billion Saudi payoff, they don't know the meaning of the word IRONY! (I can't compete with Jeff in the run-on sentence dept.😊)

PJ Schuster's avatar

Exactly!! The accusations against DA Willis were ridiculous from the outset, but after the first day of the hearing & testimony from Wade, Willis, her father, & the ex-Gov, there should be no doubt that she did not hire Wade in order to have financial benefit accrue to her.

The fact that she asked others to fill that position & they unequivocally turned it down should tell anyone that the accusations are groundless.

This was nothing more than an obvious attempt to smear Willis’ reputation & just more delaying tactics; both suspiciously similar to tried & true Trump techniques.

JEFF TIEDRICH was the first thing I thought yesterday as this news came out, and you didn't fail to amuse, as usual.

So, let's see; Joe and Hunter taking $5M each in bribes to keep Ukranian prosecutors off Burisma's back? LIES!

2000 Mules "documentary," made by that fuckface Dinesh d'Fuckface, and backed by "True the Vote," another Trump endorsed group of lying asshole? LIES!!

The only thing that will save us is VOTING against Trump and all the lying, fucking weasels in his orbit; but DAMN! I love these stories coming out! Let's hope Judge Engoron can get the fine to $500M, so that David "Breaking News as We Come on the Air" Muir is forced to say that the judgment was for A HALF A BILLION DOLLARS!

This will be a GOOD GODDAMNED weekend! Happy weekend to all!

Sharon C Storm's avatar

David Muir is my favorite journalist. He presents truth, no matter who it concerns. The best news show on tv.

Lorraine Parish's avatar

omg, i forgot, i think he's supposed to decide today. fingers crossed!

RV maxima's avatar

$355M, recently.

And, plus $83M, and what the 1st $5M, or is that $10M

Total? ABOUT$488M.

So, he wants to appeal, the bond is? Good luck, I imagine unless some donors want to pass the hat!

Hahaha

RV maxima's avatar

PS the interest must be soul crushing...if you had a soul that is.

Lorraine Parish's avatar

fucking beautiful! oh, you forgot the first Jean Carroll amount of 5.5 million.

RV maxima's avatar

Did I?

Another $5M on top of 450ish...AND interest at 9%!!! 9%!!!. Little Donny FuckFace is having a shitty day and I am loving it.

AND if he wants to appeal, he has to put up 120% of the $460!

PS did I mention he has an ongoing IRS audit, risking another $100M? Or that lying to get the DC Post Office hotel, etc. My understanding is this is how we get to$450M, but some of these the meter has been running from before the court fing, like 2019!

All of this golf courses, etc are also losing money and he needs to keep throwing $$ at them!, sucking money he doesn't have. Oh, how much will those trials cost? No wonder he started using this to fund raise today.

That narcissistic collapse is most certainly coming-timber!

Lorraine Parish's avatar

totally agree. if some psycho billionaire gives him the dough, how does that work?

RV maxima's avatar

For us? Badly. Especially if it comes from Putin or some pass through. This maybe the most dangerous times because so many legal money issues we have. And it won't be illegal from many sources, like PAC money. Maybe the Saudis will do it.

un poco loco's avatar

And no wonder he wants Lara at the RNC where she can keep funneling cash to him. (Does he really think that a party full of people a lot like him is going to stand by while he empties the bank accounts and looks under the sofa cushions?)

What's most gratifying about the Engeron judgment is that thing about having to put up 120% of the fraud judgment if he wants to appeal. He could still use his favorite delaying tactic if he wants, but it's going to cost him more than he's got.

PJ Schuster's avatar

In the fraud case with Engoron, there is already 99-100M added to that right now for interest that has been accruing since the fraud occurred or since the case was filed; I’m not clear which date, but it is already owed, & interest will continue to accrue until appeals are done & the judgement is paid

RV maxima's avatar

Yes, including the funding for the old post office/ DC and others, from 2019 in one case I read, but surely further back, and at 9%! The 2% change in NY law is recent with the present governor, so even at a combination of rates, I believe the estimated $1M/ a week in further accruing interest! Ouch!

And, baby I hope it hurts that conman, old Donny 2-books as much as it appears it does and should.

TJTarheel's avatar

These fuck heads with twisted brain strings-what in hell are they doing or have been doing save impeachment of any and everyone in Joe Biden’s safe zone. I tried talking sense into my grandson about this but he believes all the idiots are telling the truth. WTH is wrong he is my off spring of my off spring. Why can’t that planet eater be taken off the ballot, be disqualified for the insurrection or I don’t know for pissing in public or anything? Joe has to beat him he just has to or we are fucked as a planet.

SeekingReason's avatar

TJ- It is truly bizarre that people can’t come to a conclusion about trump by merely listening to one single rally speech! It is way beyond shocking to me that trump can’t be removed for doing far more dangerous stunts than the Rosenbergs. As we know, they got the death penalty. Add rapist to trump’s deadly coup attempt, colluding with Russia. If the Rosenberg’s got the death penalty, trump would qualify for our famous CiA Off premises torture program.

What the hell else is going on that this draft dodging orange vomit, Covid-denying killer, coup attempting killer, rapist, traitor, CLEAR violator of 14th Amendment Sec 3…cannot be stopped in any way.

The Democrats allowed Obama’s Supreme Court pick to be stopped with a year left in office. Trump was assigning judges up to the minute he left the office he never won! 😡🤯

Question is when will GOP voters learn?

Marty's avatar

Nonononono! GOP voters do not learn. They keep on doing the same, believing the same, repeating the same old sh_ _ . We must stop hoping 'they will learn.' They will not. We need to find those folks who do learn and do care.

Bill Lawrence's avatar

They won't. At least the diehard MAGAmorons won't. What Trump is giving them, the meanness, the lies, the outrage, the cruelty, is what they crave.

Marty's avatar

This is true. It’s a mass mental illness…

Not likely anytime soon. The orange Kool-aid is permanently attached to their DNA.

un poco loco's avatar

I'm pretty sure the major qualification for being a GOP voter is NOT being able to think critically (arguably necessary to do much learning beyond a certain point). It's not a question of whether they went to school; it's whether their minds were open to input that challenged their brains to engage at least marginally.
