Maybe not to this extent, but start with the John Birch society and Evangelicals in the 70's, the right wing crazies we used to think were the fringe of the GOP (Pat Robertson, Billy Graham & Liberty University) the Tea Party and Trump's conspiracy theory about Obama's birth certificate. The obsession with the right over abortion and even killing doctors. Newt Gingrich. Reagan and his policies. I wasn't paying attention either, but looking back the signs were there.
