A mild Santa Ana wind is actually nice and makes for a pleasant winter day. A normal Santa Ana is only bad below the passes and canyons (where I live, unfortunately.) The fierce, widespread wind we have today is pretty rare, the last one this bad was in 2011.
This event is worse. In fact, it's the worst I've *ever* seen (a nearby NWS station recorded an 83 mpg gust), and I've lived in my house since 1989. I've always lived in SoCal, but not always in the wind tunnel.
Same, even worse than the year my house was surrounded by a ring of fire every direction you looked. We were far enough away from the flames but not the smoke and ash. Terrifying to behold.
I’ve lived in both Pasadena and Los Angeles. The one thing I don’t miss about Southern California is the Santa Ana winds.

True, a mild one is pleasant but I remember the 2011.
