I believe it’s a long list of things that have contributed: all types of right wing media that has directly lied and distorted facts, people being deliberately manipulated and jacked up with fear tactics, lack of civic-government-history education, lack of understanding of the impact of linguistics-repetition-simple brainwashing techniques, inability and lack of information about how to stand up for democracy, etc.

The fun fact regarding the brain is that the protective myelin sheath that surrounds brain tissue when young and allows the easily manipulated compartmentalisation of a ‘fight or flight’ response to be compulsive, begins to break down around age 50. Live long enough and social mediated dopamine stops working.

The Elders will save the world !

The most significant thing is actually the fact that most Americans don't follow politics at all. They vote based on the bullshit they pick up literally days before the elections.
