Well, Asheville is my longtime hometown. It’s a 🔵 in the mountains, well known for its great beers, hiking and other touristy things, surrounded by a sea of red. The city got stiffed by his campaign the first time so they got smart this time and made them pay ahead, as you said. I am excited about Kamala and the Coach's campaign, but I am still worried about the Bad Billionaire Bros bucks in this campaign. The momentum is with Harris and Walz going into the Democratic convention in my home town, but it is early days and there are issues that will be harped on in commercials that will shake things up. We need to be strong and help the momentum along.

The Democrats need to be on the offense not defense. They should be dumping money in ads. They need to stay ahead of the game. Especially, red states. They need to be present in these communities. They sucked in Florida. They gave up.

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

Solidly Red States, even if they could be purple, are not going to get the monies needed to turn swing states, just as the Blue States may not get this attention either. Dollars go where they are most needed. I hope Florida's Democratic party does well, and gives people reason to think it too can be purple. One way to do that is to get rid of the horrid DeSantis. He is a bad governor and a bad person.

Expand full comment
Let me sum up's avatar

But especially when the campaign has approximately a kajillion dollars, and doesn't even put forth an effort in red states, we'll never get them back. FFS, iowa Idaho & Indiana went for Obama in 2008.

Expand full comment
Robert Eckert's avatar

Iowa and Indiana, but not Idaho. However, Missouri was close enough that Obama was entitled to an automatic recount if he asked for it (but didn't because a. recounts rarely change the outcome, and b. it would have just been pointless running up the score).

Expand full comment
Linda Weide's avatar

Threehundred or even 400 million is far from a kajillion dollars. The campaign that has a lot of Bad Billionaire Bros bucks, as well as other types of billionaires is the Trump campaign. Remember he is going to cut their taxes and let the rest of us pay for them the rest of our lives. Did you hear that Musk has pledged 45 mil a month. That is not what the Harris Walz campaign has and that has its advantages. Would you want your candidate beholden to Musk. My home state is Illinois, which is Blue, it is going to get attention because my city is hosting the DNC. But, if it were not, I would not expect them to come to town other than to fundraise, because we are True Blue! Is that true of Florida? If not, then with no chance of winning, and not much money coming from the state, it is a less efficient, effective way to win. And a huge amount of energy being expended to rally the Swing states, which Florida is not considered to be, how much can you expect them to do everything. If there are signs that that is changing then we will probably see them going to Iowa, Idaho and Indiana. However, Florida, the state of hanging chads and the stolen election from Gore is not a democratic favorite I am afraid. Of course, I am not the campaign manager, so perhaps if things look good in swing states necessary to get enough electoral votes to win look locked up, then they might swing to states that do not have any hope, just to back up the Blue Candidates.

It is not unnecessary fear. The Electoral Count Act does nothing about the person(s) in charge of elections in county XYZ from refusing to certify their ballots, thereby preventing the Secy of State from completing the certification of the state’s final vote count.

It is a fact that the Republicans have put into place at least 70 election deniers in place to administer the elections in 70 counties scattered over the 7 swing states. If they all decide to refuse to certify their ballots, it’s going to be an enormous mess, multiple legal battles, probably ending up at the Supreme Court. Do you trust those 6 corrupt liars to do the right thing?

I don’t. Fortunately Marc Elias is on the case with his group Democracy Docket, & I’ve heard that the Biden admin has attorneys ready to fight back, so at least they aren’t clueless.

With respect, the size of the margin will make no difference to those who choose to ignore verifiable reality (= virtually all MAGAts).

kari lake, in a recent interview with Emily Maitlis (a very good British reporter who oushed her on the big lie), responded: "Do you believe that Joe Biden got more votes than Barack Obama?" But if lake had bothered to google for a minute, she'd have seen that turnout in 2020 was much higher than it had been in 2008 and 2012 (presumably bc so many people finally understood how dangerous djt is), *and* that the US population has grown since then, meaning a bigger number of eligible voters. So it is indeed believable that Biden earned 81mil votes.

Some MAGAt recently posted (on ts, I think) that if djt said he has the support of 75% of all Americans, then it *must* be true (can't remember whether Jeff wrote about this in the past few days) -- again, someone who refuses to look beyond the bubble and get the facts, bc he can't tolerate verifiable reality.

These people are psychologically damaged. That's why they cannot accept verifiable reality -- and the rest of us have paid a huge price. I believe that KHTW will win by a pretty big margin, but I also know that it won't make a difference to The Faithful. (ETA) So we can't rely on a big margin -- we have to fight in every way that we can. (As others have noted, donating to Democracy Docket is a good start.)

I'm grateful to you for reminding us of this. I'm also noting that MAGAts will do whatever they can to skirt or flout laws -- and that GA has recently passed a new law that will fkkk things up. (See below.)

I would think that a federal law would supersede a state one, even a newer state law, but I don't know. And my understanding is that delays in certification beyond Jan. 6 would send the issue to Congress, which would send the issue to each state legislature, whereby each gets one vote -- and 26 state legs. are GOP-controlled.

Election-law powerhouse Marc Elias has appeared on MSNBC a few times lately; if he's not certain that certification will go off without a hitch, then I think we all need to be prepared.

From TPM, on the new GA law: The rule change passed by the GOP-run State Election Board gives that very board — which is meant to hold a largely ministerial responsibility in the certification process, according to state law — the power to not certify election results until a “reasonable inquiry” into any discrepancies in the voting process at the county level has been conducted by election officials there. The problem is, the full text of the new rule does not define what constitutes a “reasonable inquiry.”

I live in Asheville and you’re correct that there’s no love for ConOLD here. However, Asheville is a blue dot in a sea of red surrounding counties. A lot of the people who attend the hate fest in Asheville came from East Tennessee. That stupid hate fest created a traffic nightmare yesterday. Two major interstate highways were shut down for hours yesterday.

Democrats don’t even bother to run for office there because it’s such a MAGA pit. 🤬

I feel for you. One of my dearest friends moved there from NY (don't ask); I worry about him a lot. Initially I was concerned about culture shock, about his being unable to get good medical care or a good haircut, and about some anti-gay comments; now I worry for his + his longtime partner's safety and well-being.

If you're comfortable sharing your reasons for being there, I'm curious -- but I realize that I'm prying (I apologize), and I'd understand if you don't want to reply. Take care over there!

My late husband was an attorney and was a partner in a huge DC law firm, but he always wanted to work in-house for a corporation.

An opening came up with a client of his firm and he took it. It was a great move for his career, but I fought it. I lived in the DC area most of my life and my friends and family were there. But I had no choice and we moved. It’s a beautiful area, but I had total culture shock.

My husband suddenly passed away and I got sick and became disabled. I can’t get out.

The gay community here is strong and I haven’t heard of any hate crimes. My neighbors across the street are fantastic and own a very popular gay club. RuPaul even spent a weekend with them.

So, I think your friends will be ok after some adjustment.

According to WBTV out of Charlotte, the auditorium was full and there were people outside waiting to come in. However, 4000 people is still not anywhere close to Harris and Walz's rallies. You're right about Asheville residents not goung to the rally, but I think there were enough rural areas full of MAGAts in western NC who went.

I saw the video of the Wolf Auditorium during Trump’s speech and it definitely was not full.

Trump couldn’t fill a 2431 seat auditorium. Sad.

Expand full comment
Nancy Potter's avatar

The nice thing about a small venue is that it's easy to fill up, even if you're Trump. So the optics are SRO attendance. And should Kamala come through town in a few weeks and want to use that venue, she's not going to be able to fill it any fuller than Trump did, so there won't be a comparison. Of course, she could fill a much larger venue to the gills in the same city.

Expand full comment
KL Pierce's avatar

The actual civic center in Asheville has a capacity for approx 7500. ConOLD had to choose a smaller venue within the civic center that has a 2500 seat capacity. Harris and Walz would fill 7500 seats easily. No doubt.

Donald J Trump

Mar-A-Lago

1100 S Ocean Blvd

Palm Beach, FL 33480

Dear Piece-of-Shit Donald,

Let me take just a few minutes to explain why I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever vote for you......

Let me begin by saying that you are a blatant serial liar, you are the ultimate con, you are a fraud, you are a grifter, you are a total bull-shitter, and you are a scumbag. In my humble opinion, you are a racist, a misogynist and a total fucking asshole. And, a Hitler-adoring fascist as well. Almost every time you open your rotten, nasty mouth, you lie about something. You are a totally disgusting person.

And, you are Putin’s Puppet; Putin helped you squeak out a win in 2016, but his attempt to help you get re-elected in 2020, thank God, failed miserably. Putin is trying to get you elected for a second term; he knows that you will hand Ukraine to him on a silver platter and that you will pull the USA out of the NATO Alliance. In my mind, you are a traitor! A god damn fucking traitor!

And, you are a terrible businessperson. Every intelligent person in America knows that had you simply invested in the stock market every penny your KKK- racist father left you, you would, today, be a REAL billionaire many times over. The fact that you are not really a billionaire means that you aren’t a successful businessperson. The only two things that generated whatever wealth you do have today stemmed from two things. The Fake/Fraud/Con Apprentice reality TV show and the hundreds of millions of dollars Putin-directed Russian Oligarchs and Russian Mafia laundered through your condo projects.

Continue to demean women, asswipe. Continue your racist ways, asswipe. You will find out in November that the vast majority of Americans believe, like I do, that you were America’s Presidential Accident and that you are America’s Disgrace.

I hope you rot in hell, scumbag. Perhaps today would be a good day for you to go grab some woman by her pu__y. Or shoot someone on 5th Avenue. Or call someone the “n-word” like you did during a planning session for an Apprentice episode. Or reflect on your memories of playing with your former buddy pedophile sex-abuser Jeffrey Epstein. Or invite a fellow racist and a fellow anti- Semite over for drinks and dinner. Or, join a march with your torch-carrying “fine-people” Neo-Nazi’s. Or, work on our next rambling, idiotic, nonsensical, hate-filled, divisive, dumbass rally speech. (I do enjoy listening to you make a fool out of yourself.)

It pisses me off that newspapers and news websites, all across America, don’t have the balls to call you out for the blatant liar you are. The title of the article: “Donald J Trump is a Liar, a Con and a Fraud”. You put up a post on TruthSocial that said, “I know nothing about Project 2025”. You fucking liar. After you said that, someone posted, in the Internet, a photo of you sitting next to Scum, Piece-of-Shit, Fascist Kevin Roberts (President of the Heritage Foundation) on a private jet on your way with Roberts to a Heritage Foundation conference, and you were a speaker at that conference. “Trump told the audience that the Heritage Foundation was ‘going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do.’" You god damn fucking liar.

Unfortunately for you (but, fortunately for Americans) your next “term” will be a prison term. I’ve reached out to Honorable Judge Juan Merchan to ask him to start your prison sentence on President Kamala Harris’ Inauguration Day!

Disrespectfully yours,

Joel

p.s., for intelligence/intellectually-challenged MAGAts (rhymes with maggots), President Kamala Harris’ first name is pronounced “, LA”. That said, YOU can address Kamala Harris as “MADAM PRESIDENT”!

Also, Re: the tic-tacs. He couldn't even get the point across using a PROP. Which isn't surprising since he has no idea what shrinkflation is, or net zero, or...well, how anything works.
