Thanks, it is very frightening. If all these people are going to be rounded up, etc. Who will work the jobs that they leave behind? Do they ever think about that? Who will grow the food, pick the produce, work in the meat factories, roof their white castle homes?

Their thought process is not only deranged but very limited. We remember candidates like Wallace and Goldwater who scared the hell out of many people but their ideology was tame in comparison to this autocratic madman. Can't ever remember a campaign platform that was solely based on revenge, power, hate and staying out of prison.

I have come to hate the media with a passion! Most of the major news outlets have become useless, money grubbing, attention seeking, and destructive. Each day they practice misdirection and are greedy-sloppy destroyers of democracy. The polling is the stupidest bullshit to ever waste our precious time - based on calling (haha) a thousand people. Fuck that shit!

Expand full comment
NEAL O'CONNOR's avatar

Sorry, but we need the media. They serve a purpose, even if they seem to be failing now. They need to report the obvious Truth that Trump is losing his mind, and not in a good way. He is victim to the dementia he accuses Biden of having. Is it Sioux City or Sioux Falls, old man? Must you echo Nazi propaganda (Without the Teutonic wit), Donald?

Expand full comment
Sarah's avatar

While I’m hating the failure of many media outlets I completely realize that we are screwed without it. We need as much actual news (less punditry and opinion) as we can get. Our democracy fails when we are unaware of what is taking place and we must hold the media itself and those it reports on accountable. We can’t do that if we don’t have facts.

The fact that America is even considering the incompetent fascist criminal Trump as a viable candidate tells the rest of the world all they need to know about the so-called United States. Putin should just wait for 2025 such that as the extremist sociopathic GOP controls the House and will not help any of our allies, and a Trump presidency would simply abandon NATO, thus allowing Putin to expand Russian borders to France while Trump tries to buy Greenland.

The media loves putting a microphone in front of sociopathic circus clowns like Trump, MTG, and others 24x7 because then they don’t have to actually pay journalists to cover deep SCOTUS corruption, growing wealth inequality, or the complete disarray in the House of Representatives.

There are no easy answers. A meaningful democracy requires an educated, informed, and engaged society. I’ve seen a significant erosion of all three pillars throughout my lifetime, while wealth/power has concentrated. First we must all vote. Beyond a continuing commitment to vote we must prioritize societal investment in all three pillars to strengthen and protect democracy while fulfilling its promise. And share Jeff’s writing -he’s informative and entertaining, a wonderfully dangerous combination.

I haven't forgotten those senators that visited Putin on the 4th of July; likely he made them prove their loyalty by selecting that day in particular.

However, Steve Bannon's stated goal is to utterly destroy democracy in general and the US in particular. He is often referred to as a brilliant strategist and intellectual (no idea if that's actually true) but his self-loathing and hatred of others dictates his primary goal to destroy America. Yes, Putin wants to destroy America too and he installed tRump to steal top secret info for him, which he has likely already been given. Bannon is boots on the ground in America, and working closely with GOP operatives to disassemble our nation from within and create shameful policies like caging asylum-seeking children and babies. Bannon is the one coming up with these evil plans with Stephen Miller, as well as plans to overthrow elections. Bannon is definitely calling most of the shots; Trump listens to him. Putin is busy with his own war and meddling in Hamas/Israel conflict; he already got what he needed from tRump.

Trump has said that "Mein Kampf" was his favorite book. I don't think that he can read that well so someone must have read it to him.

I think that is another Trump lie. But he has learned enough about the Third Reich to envy what Hitler did. Unlike normal people, who are repelled by the horror.

Trump is too chickensh*t to shoot anyone on 5th avenue or anywhere else. It is all of the disturbed, retarded, defective people who believe in all of the Big Lies that are the danger. That includes people in Congress and the DOJ. Trump worked hard on Project 2025 when he was in the White House from 2017 to 2021. The extent of his rigging of our government: the tax structure, "his" judges throughout the court system, his stealing and sale of classified secrets, and much more are being discovered all the time. Benedict Arnold and John Wilkes Booth pale in comparison. There has never been a greater enemy of the United States than Donald J Trump.

Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it. Who was it that praised Washington's rag tag Revolutionary Army for liberating the airports that the British had seized in 1775?

I had an uncle that served in the 101st Airborne. He had to parachute into Nazi Germany. The majority of the German people that he came in contact with were thankfully kind, so he was kind to them. They didn't want war and death. They didn't want Hitler.

As the Allied forces entered Berlin and neared Hitler's bunker, Hitler and Eva took cyanide to commit suicide. People in the compound set it on fire and ran.

My dad once quipped: IF you can keep your head while those about you lose theirs, perhaps you don’t understand the situation.

I am frustrated. What action within lawful means can we take? The courts, quite correctly, are hamstrung with due process. Ironically, actions to expedite remediation are exactly why we cannot.

We have a national party having made a Faustian bargain to secure power. We have cynical News agencies and Commentators whose paycheck is the driving force, damn the consequence.

I loathe bandying terms such as Fascist, yet what else comes to mind? MAGA-IST? Whatever the word, we must socialize the term in all its ugliness.

The notion of the deportation camps is incredible and for reason cited. The Japanese-American internment camps are instructive. They were not the concentration camps like Germany. Yet, those interned suffered economic loss. They lived in awful conditions like Manzanar in CA’s Owens Valley. In the end, and some years later, an apology of sorts. Sort of like “thoughts and prayers.”

I know others may have felt a tinge of familiarity with Hitlerism/Nazism, but most seemed to be deaf. Here we are, these many years later, and people are still ignoring what has become blatantly obvious. What are we waiting for? What are we confused about?

History IS repeating itself yet eyes and ears still close to what is now made obvious by spoken and written words. Is it comforting to ignore the danger all around us?

The DC Holocaust museum has one exhibit that examines the steps Hitler took toward the final solution.
