I like Mark Kelly too.I thought about Josh Shapiro-he’s great too-but Kelly has the astronaut card, the military card, the husband of Gabby Giffords card and is not gay, black, Muslim/Jewish or other religions not Christian, and most of all he is NOT a 36 count felon.

As a Pennsylvanian, I can vouch for Shapiro’s qualifications, but we need him here in Pennsylvania a bit longer

I like him, too, but I wonder if right now the time is right for a Jew. Israel is in such bad odor at the moment.

It’s not the right time for another avowed Zionist, that’s what lost the younger voters & quite a few POC voters. David Hogg has already warned against doing that.

Please don’t take our Mark Kelly. We need him very badly right here in AZ.

"if Kelly became vice president, Democrats would need to fill his seat, potentially risking it flipping to the Republican column and imperiling the party’s chances of Senate control. Arizona’s Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs would almost certainly appoint a Democrat to fill Kelly’s seat. But then that person would have to run in a special election in 2026 and again in 2028 for a full term." - Huff Po

Thanks. I was wondering how that process would happen if Mark Kelly is VP nominee, with DEM gov appointing a Dem to fill his seat.

Also apparently in AZ the Governor has to call a special election to fill the seat.

Yeah, the argument against is that he'd be replaced by a Republican governor.

Our Governor in AZ, Katie Hobbs, is a strong Dem, so we have that going for us if Kelly is selected as a presidential running mate. Bush took our previous Dem Governor from us for his first Secretary of Homeland Security, and we had two GOP governors for years after that before we got Katie in!

OMG! I love this! This is the type of thing MAGA would come up with! It would be satisfying to beat them at their own game.

Last night "Proof of Life" was trending on Xitter because the MAGA/Q conspiracy theorists are speculating about Joe and whether he's still alive.😵‍💫

Makes me sad that being Jewish makes Josh Shapiro possibly slip off VP list. Appreciate details on Mark Kelly, that AZ's DEM gov would replace him with a Dem. A swing state too.

It makes me sad that several of the top prospects would not pass the muster from certain groups. I love Buttigieg but would fear that his being gay would not work. Same with Shapiro being Jewish. We all know that racism and sexism is alive and well in our country, sadly. We need the perfect candidate for VP. I am hoping with time, a gay/Jewish/Muslim/ and other persons who are NOT WASP can hold the highest offices in the land. I think the younger generations will see this happen in their lifetimes, boomers, not so much.

I'm a Boomer and I agree. I'm to the point that all I wish for my remaining years is that we never, ever elect a GOP president again. The diversity elected officials will come later than my generation. I also think we will elect a gay president before we ever elect an atheist. Right now all I want is Trump gone. Never to see his ugly face again or hear that whiny voice. I don't have a bucket list anymore as far as politics is concerned. The threat is so great right now, that all that needs to happen in the near future is for him to lose. We also need to win Congress.

No advantage in the EC, but perhaps useful in drawing on-the-fence voters in various purple states, thus turning at least one of them blue for at least for this election. Perhaps.

As far as electing an atheist (I'm agnostic), with Separation of Church and State, I would LOVE to see a candidate run while never bringing their faith, or lack of faith, into the public arena.

Deborah Hunter's avatar

Totally agree. I think though, that it will be the last glass ceiling to be broken - an atheist president. The US leads the world in so many things, but lags behind when it comes to progressive social issues acceptance. We talk about human rights all the time, but we don't always walk the walk. And every time the finger can be pointed at the GOP as a group. They hide behind their religious cloak, but it's not religion at all. They as a group, are the BIGGEST hypocrites I've ever seen when it comes to religion. I used to be proud when seeing our flag. Now when I see it, I see MAGA and the word Christian makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. They have bastardized two symbols growing up that meant something to be proud of. Not flag underwear now on a 350 pound Trump supporter or a swastika flag being carried by a "Christian".

Because you need the youth vote and right now, the war in Israel/Gaza is a touchy subject with many college students supporting Gaza. You want to appeal to the broadest base you can right now.

Fwiw, I think the presence of a Jewish VP in addition to a Jewish SG could lose the votes of mild bigots (= not thrilled about a Jewish SG but that's not a deal-breaker) or people who are distraught about the treatment of the Palestinians.

(Yes, I know that the SG has zero official duties, but bigots and semi-bigots ain't rational thinkers ... )

Yippee!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳 This 65+ SWF yearns for more diversity!! Our DC WH, SCOTUS & Congress need to look like real America diversity-wise!

Expand full comment
Deborah Hunter's avatar

I want my elected officials to behave with integrity and reasonable domestic/foreign policies. Yes, diversity is important, but just because you have a minority in an important role, doesn't mean that the above will be the end result. Look at Thomas on the SC. Look at Menendez. What about the minorities that are Trump supporters? Same with women now in what used to be male roles. MTG, Bobo, Marsha - all women. I'd take a male any day over them. I've also noticed that when women are in certain male roles, they take on more male characteristics that we don't want. The warm, fuzzy mom stuff goes out the window. You see naked ambition, greed, ruthlessness, just like with some men. You won't be able to succeed in that toxic world unless you adapt to the environment. So I think it would be great if the US finally gets into the 21st century and elects a woman president. But that is not my absolute goal - I want a decent president, male or female.
