This kind of "terrify our side into giving up" stuff is counterproductive, and there's literally no evidence of this. What there IS evidence of — and this kind of baseless fear mongering diverts us from fighting — is that they will try numerous ways to make it harder to vote. As a 20-year fair elections advocate, I beg you not to spread this type of panic-mongering.

This is the kind of stuff they need to be being called out on every single day, every single time they're in front of a microphone trying to convince us our government has not been taken away from us. In 1998, I legally changed my name. I un-mangled the mangling that the folks at Ellis Island did when my grandpa came over from Poland. After my name change was granted, I changed my name on my driver's license, Social Security card, pretty much everything else, except my birth certificate. I even have a State-issued RealID, which apparently won't be good enough for these ghouls.

Today, I completed, had notarized, and sent off the form to correct my name on my birth certificate - because even though I am a white woman (who has never voted Republican, much less for the current crop of assclowns), I'm still a liberal - and I am taking no chances with my vote.

It's absolutely ridiculous that anyone should have to do this, period. Yet here we are.

Expand full comment
SPW's avatar

I haven’t figured out why the Real ID won’t work. When I got mine I had to present every piece of legal paper that followed me from cradle to this point in my life; all 78 years of it. That meant my birth certificate, marriage license, divorce decree, legal name change back to maiden name, second marriage license plus my social security card and my passport.

Note to unmarried women, DO NOT CHANGE YOUR NAME FOR ANY REASON! Men don’t have all these issues you know.

That's already been happening. Women's votes are marginalized in both directions. In states where it's hard for white people to vote in person GOP encourages mail in voting (or it's the only option) which means white women's husbands cast/control both ballots. Then in cities vote by mail is discouraged/disallowed and there's reduction in access via polling places or ID for women of all ethnicities, including whites who might be 'free' to vote in privacy. I've said it before and it bears repeating, the only way out is ERA ratification and enforcement of tort actions against discrimination based on gender. Stupid women who voted anti-DEI were willing to bargain away their own agency so they didn't have to share it with women or color or a small group (percentage wise) of our gender-fluid friends and family. Now it's too late to hold back the tide.

That's now. Going from Plymouth to what is now northern Rhode Island took about a week in 1636 with few horses, poor trails, etc. I think getting to Middletown in CT was the same, but I believe it's on the Connecticut River, so arriving on a river would have been easier. Some Wetmore (my paternal grandmother's maiden name) was one of the first settlers in Middletown, and I believe a Cole or two was one of the first settlers in northern Rhode Island. Next time I see my genealogy I'll get some more information for you!!

*** The bill's author dismisses these concerns, but some conservatives have openly expressed a desire to repeal the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote.

FYI, per Newsweek, February 12th, the SAVE Act has NOT passed in the new legislative session (it was reintroduced last month). Also, the hype about birth certificates and current last names is a bit overblown in some cases. For instance, a Real ID is an acceptable form of documentation, as is a passport. This isn't "women will be denied the vote;" this is making it more of a hardship to register, in some cases. Don't get me wrong---it's a really bad piece of legislation. But better to have the facts, to know how to oppose the bill.

It's a major hinderance and pointedly making it difficult for women especially to cast their ballot.

Before we see massive protest marches and other forms of resistance to Trump's delusional decent into dictatorship and monarchy, there is one an immediate reason for some hope. Trump's rapidly declining approval rating.

After his victory Trump's approval rating was at 48%. Just 4 weeks into Trump 2.0 its dropped to 42-44%..And the "King" has barely started destroying himself. We the Governed are coming for King Donald.

Imagine where his standing in public opinion after he slashes Medicare and CHIP programs for 80 million Americans. Or he refuses to release federal FEMA funds to disaster victims. Or Hegseth, at Trump's direction cuts the military budget by 8% and discharges the LGBTQ community from service. Many of the negatively effected citizens voted for Trump. Or inflation rapidly ticks back up to 9% because of Trump's tariff tax on all Americans and expulsion of hard working immigrants. Or unemployment skyrockets. Or every American with parents, grandparents or great grandparents who fought in WWII watch Trump disparage NATO and hug Putin. And Trumps AG and FBI Director make a mockery of Justice in America.

How will the American investor class feel when his cumulating actions drive stock prices down by 20-30%? The risks are very high and the benefits of his agenda are very meager.

I'm hoping Trump's approval rating plummets into the mid 30s by the end of March and keeps falling.

What will the chicken s**t GOP do then? Especially in purple districts. Trump's is the agenda they've supported. They own it. The public will gladly vote them out of office.
