I wake up every morning with dread and panic. Fear. I look at others wondering… are you a Trumper? I won’t trust anyone who is. Our lives have been destroyed by a criminal and they cheer for him. WTF? We’ve become a willfully shithole country and thank god for communities like this where I don’t feel so alone. ✌️

I’m all in with Cory Booker. I don’t feel personally afraid of maga, but I do feel afraid and compassion for those who are going to be affected by their cruel immigration policies. I have friends who are immigrants and they are getting ready now to go back to their homelands no matter the circumstances there. I see the fear in them.

My husband is Mexican and was born in the United States. He faced racism most of his young life and suddenly is feeling it again.

God damn trump and those who voted for him.

Let’s hold each other up and tight.

And resist we must.

Newsom is holding a meeting with the state assembly on 12/2. CA is the 5th largest economy driver in the world. I am praying that he gets the state legislators (majority are Dems) to withhold federal taxes. That way we would be able to protect our migrant workers and immigrants because the money would be there. CA, on the average, pays over $200 billion each year. We have 40 million people here. If that money is withheld, the feds have to reach into their own pockets to run the country. CA would put a HUGE dent into the Maga system.

And MAGAts are already feeling buyers remorse as they begin to realize just what Trump's plans would mean for them. It isn't good. The brighter buttons among them may also realize that once they have voted this monster in and given him what he wants he will turn to is real base: the wealthiest in the country. Trump wasn't kidding when he told them that he didn't care about them--he just wanted their vote.

See the link below re estimated cost of mass deportations as immigration reform policy and use those phrases when posting on your socials. Deportations will cripple major sectors of the economy that most people want to function (food and construction) they just don't know it yet. Poor stupid suckers. Keep your head up and don't give people who don't know any better more power than they have usurped already. Just sticking with the facts will help. People in Congress are going to reach a point where it's going to be hard to justify the effects of what they've done and we just need to be ready to say 'told you so' with legitimate information that mirrors REALITY.

Hey, I just had a thought - if deportations carry such a high fiscal burden (approx $180b/yr) is there any possibility they will use deportations as 'show' to scare the crap out of people and convince those in opposition that the gvmt will be coming for us if we step out of line - and then not carry the whole policy through because it will cripple food production and construction? We need independent reporting to suss out what's really happening and who's really in charge besides Elon. I think the plundering is going to happen on many fronts, but I'm prepared for anything in front of us to also be a distraction from something more important to them.

Expand full comment
Anne Whitney's avatar

Oh the economy trashing will happen because he's such a stupid fucker he's going to let Musk break the bank, but just the threat of tariffs is having an effect on large and small businesses that rely on Chinese goods to function snd profit snd leaders are explaining to their employees that they aren't getting Christmas bonuses this yr because of the threat of tariffs - so it's possible this sharp tack away from stability motivated fiscal policy will have more immediate effects than we are used to and the hangover effect will be erased. I agree economics is the hardest thing for people to grasp. Having something like this to share with your friends and family on socials might wake them up to the pending econ reality of a $88b cost to deport 1m 'illegals' and the lost tax revenue that 'illegals' pay without getting a vote (also near 100b/yr), and the rich are getting a massive tax break on day 1 - if people do the 7th grade math they can see for themselves. It's dicey because pmthe dawn comes slowly for some but the most effective counter will be their own voters being unhappy with what they do, no? https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/mass-deportation

Bill Lawrence's avatar

What makes Musk think he can wipe 2-3 Trillion off the books? He won't be able to touch the military, which eats up a large proportion of the budget. Knowing Republicans, he'll look to the already tattered social safety net, and the blowback will be huge.

Expand full comment
Anne Whitney's avatar

I would be surprised if there wasn't a major across the board freak out if they started messing in with SSA/SSDI and theres already intentions to beef up military and give tax breaks upward, and waste money on deportations instead of schools, so a balanced budget only seems possible with super draconian cuts and there is something in all of these plans that hurts nearly everyone who voted gop. The one silver lining is that if they are in control of everything and things go south for the true majority of people, there will be backlash they won't be able to pin on anyone else.

I don't know your situation to come up with something, but if it were me, I would consider a one line zinger as the door closes behind you - probably could find a few quips on here that may fit. Years ago, I left a job after only a few months due to multiple concerns with the management. The head manager, when I walked in one day and surprised him with my immediate resignation, retaliated with, "glad to see you go" as I walked out. I responded with, "yes, so am I, the management here has so many deficits," as I shut the door. I still grin when I remember his startled look. Enjoy your retirement!

Groups are organizing for rallies and other activities. A google search will help you find them near you. The Woman’s March is scheduled for inauguration day in DC and will be announcing other State capitol buildings in the very near future.

I’ve been donating what I can to the ACLU who will be crucial in helping. (I know the word donation is probably not what you want to hear)

There will be many ways to resist that will surface very soon.

Resisting also means doing what Cory Booker said. Continue to love each other. Continue to love and support your family and friends in this grieving process and then continue on with your life as best you can as you did before this election.

Not watching the news anymore is going to help me.

Fear is exactly what they want. They see power and weakness in fear.

After your grieving is over get back into life, your community, volunteer, take up a new hobby, and/or anything else that makes you feel better. Then you might be ready to participate in resisting and maybe it will be passive resistance.

Remember love always wins.

Many blessings to everyone. 🫶🏼✌🏽

People in the heartland have real economic problems that the federal government has ignored. "People are putting their groceries on their credit card. So… they’re struggling to make ends meet and the answer is to elect a hate-mongering, racist, traitorous felon who tried to overthrow the government? Sorry, plenty of people who voted AGAINST giving our country over to a bunch of evil goons are also struggling to make ends meet. I watched with my own eyes how Trumpers laughed and shouted with glee the more vulgar and vengeful their Dear Leader got. They were salivating to hear him talk about people getting beaten, or to hear him talk about immigrants like they are sub-human. These “hard up” people smiled and cheered for the grossest, most disgusting rhetoric as they happily waved “Mass Deportation Now” signs. This idea that these either venomous or willfully ignorant fucks voted the embodiment of the seven deadly sins into office knowing full well who he is because they’re stressed (as though we aren’t!) is another fucking con. Masks are off, folks. No more excuses. And let me add- all of the Trumpers I know personally are well off and not struggling at all.

Is this snark? Because, yes, I’ve done so many stupid things in my life that I’ve lost count. However, I never did something stupid that would result in mass suffering, the destruction of democracy, the normalization of rape, theft, cruelty, greed, oppression, bigotry and the flouting of basic human decency. This was a choice between democracy and fascism, decency and amoral cruelty… are you excusing this? Are you excusing this as just a silly mistake? I really hope you’re joking.

Expand full comment
Kathleen Weber's avatar

no snark at all. I voted for Harris, knowing that there would be no guarantee that she would cease arms sales to Israel. It is highly probable that the genocide in Gaza will continue. And I voted for that. So that makes ME voting for probable genocide with complete deliberation. That's worse than voting for genocide by mistake.

It is very hard to be completely pure and avoid every single mistake in this world. Some people think since Trump is such a big liar, he's lying about his plans. I don't know if they're right. I hope he'll deport just a few thousand very dramatically and be done with it. After all, he can't deport them unless the country is willing to take them back. Mexico can send troops to the border and simply block deportation busses from mentoring. If an airplane full of deportees lands in a country in Central America, that government can simply order it to fly back where it came from. Trump's power is not unlimited.

Expand full comment
Jane John Jones's avatar

It is not only highly probable that the genocide in Gaze will continue, it is guaranteed. In fact, with Netanyahu and his Kahanist thugs in charge the chance that there will be ANY Palestinians in Gaza left soon is slim to none. And the West Bank will be annexed very quickly. Your argument that you willingly voted for genocide by voting for Harris is absurd. She was the only chance that there might be some actual pushback against the Israelis. As a Jew, I say without hesitation that the current government of Israel is the greatest threat to the safety of Jews worldwide.

You can speculate all you want about what will or will not happen under Trump. Expect the worst. The original topic of our exchange was whether Trump voters voted for him because they were economically stressed or not, I said my piece. At this point, I can truly say that I forgive the Germans more than I will ever forgive American Trumpers for embracing evil, at least the Germans in the 30’s were experiencing real, crushing economic horrors and hardships. Americans during an economic upturn and the promise of real reforms offered by Harris willingly embraced the worst villainous waste of human flesh to ever darken the Oval Office. You want to make excuses for that? Have at it. It’s called “enabling”.

And the 3 leading candidates for the Majority Leader all said "Sure, boss, will do."

If there was any doubt that Republican legislators have ceded their power to an autocrat, this is it. And barely a mention from the media.

This while Trump also announced that his calls with foreign leaders will not include any other US officials, just him. "Sure, boss", they say.

With all combined the blue states combined, they far outweigh the economies of the red states. Without what they contribute to the federal government those states would go bankrupt. But for some reason many voted for a man out to destroy our economy. I live in MA so the effect will not be seen for some time since it as blue as a blue state gets. Our governor, just like Newsom has already stated she will not comply. Same for NY, IL, Minnesota, and many other blue governors.

The red states may think they’ll survive with the military complex. But only the very highly intelligent are necessary to create the kind of military systems we have. This will become another way to subvert trump’s Fascist agenda.

Trisha, Blues states have proclaimed themselves sanctuary states so good people from red states can come to these states if they need an abortion or other treatment they can’t get in their state. However, this is the best way for MAGAts to see the advantages of Blue State policies. Then, of course, they’ll want them. The best thing to happen would be for them to turn on their own. But that would take years because of their cult lifestyle preventing them from seeing the obvious.

Unfortunately, we have lost nearly all of our WWII veterans who saw and fought against fascism. My father was among them. American shallowness and smugness has led to entitlement, making grievance politics so damn effective. Apparently resentment over immigrants and rising prices is more important than resisting open fascism here in our own country. It certainly is disrespectful to your FIL, my father, and all who were the original antifa.

So if you want to bankrupt social security, go ahead…deport a bunch of immigrants!

I became a paid subscriber just now so I could reply to your comment. I homeschool my daughter, and it's certainly not "child abuse" as Kristy said below.

She's 8 years old and supposed to be in 3rd grade. However, she's one of the smartest kids I've ever known and is doing 6th grade curriculum this year. She's also neurodiverse. We were told by our public school system that her giftedness AND need for an IEP couldn't both be accommodated. So, we made the choice to begin homeschooling her during Covid.

I can assure you she's getting an amazing, secular, inclusive, non-whitewashed education. If you were to have a conversation with her, you'd never know she was 8. She wants to be an ornithologist when she grows up and thus plans to pursue a doctorate degree. She vehemently despises Trump and other Rs...to the point that she is terrified about the future of our country and planet and will say as much to your face if you're wearing MAGA gear lol.

Please reconsider the view that all homeschoolers are the same.

I’m sure many of us on Jeff’s site are intelligent enough to understand that not all home schooling is bad. It has gotten a horrible name because so many who homeschool are the ultra religious who don’t want their children to learn anything that isn’t their religious indoctrination, &/or those that don’t want their kids being required to be vaccinated to attend public schools. Also, many states do very little to zero oversight of homeschooling to make sure the kids will be able to function in the rest of society.
