by the way, I know a little about software coding and there's no way that Elmo's DOGE incels are making "improvements" to the software at the Treasury, and all the other places they've broken into. those are huge complex systems that would require weeks of careful analysis to understand. what they *could* immediately do, however, is break shit real good. that's what I worry about

For a few decades I was a sysadmin of high level computing systems. There is? was? a term for it - hack & slash coding. You see a problem, you go in and "fix it," but you don't spend an ounce of energy making sure that the "fix" doesn't affect other things. Oh, the mail system isn't properly delivering mail? OK, now mail is being delivered but now no mail can be sent. (Then they tell the incompetent bosses that the new problem is unrelated, get their kudos for being excellent at "fixing things," and get a raise.)

I didn't get a chuckle about translating that and his team of minions sledgehammering away at the government systems. Yes, that turned my smile upside down, caused my eyes to twirl wildly, and perhaps mass quantities of hair to fall away from my scalp. Ok, it felt that way, but I seem intact. What really bothers me is that about 12 - 15 years ago when California was in a short wet pattern (above normal rainfall for a few years) that a LOT of growers ripped out their crops to play almonds. Almonds that go to making Almond milk, but the vast majority of them go into shipping containers and sent to the middle east, because their cuisine uses a lot of almonds.

The transition to almonds meant that they rotated in very water thirsty crops, and now we are in the 100% predictable (and normal) dry cycles.

And then Trump does this stupid performative fuckery.

When I lived in Arizona, there were fields of alfalfa that was grown. It required a LOT of water (that is what 4 months of 110F+ days does to any agriculture) so they would about every 10 days flood the fields to about a food deep, and let it soak in. Of course a LOT of that water evaporated off.

All to grow Alfalfa that was packed into the empty shipping containers that carried the goods that came in from China, and to feed growing livestock in China and parts of asia.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

And how is that a “conservative” mindset? I lived in Fresno County and taught high school for 32 years. Moved my family into my grandparents’ home that was a few miles southwest of downtown Fresno. It had been part of a 40 acre parcel my great-grandparents bought in 1910. I loved it as a child but moving there as an adult was a bubble burst. My sons went to school with farmer kids. Their high school did not have a swimming pool (still doesn’t). I was told because those good white folks didn’t want their kids swimming with black kids from the Westside. When I sold my little 2/3-3/4 acre parcel last year, the surrounding acreage containing the original 40 acres was a vast almond orchard. Planted during the drought. My time out there coaching Little League and meeting fathers who grew up together was bereft of any liberal sentiment. Deep in the cult today, I am sure.

My grandfather was a farmer for many years, and the "let's just get stuff done" attitude is definitely a feature among many farmers. It's partly why the heavy use of pesticides and herbicides still goes on. Short-term profit overrules long-term gain.

I should have recorded everyone of those conversations.....Because sure as shit they will forget what I told them. We should pin flyers on bulletin boards and put them on fences and light poles. Simple messages....like "Trump Lies" or "we told you Trump was lying". Put pamphlets in residential Little Free Libraries. Hell, put a trash can next to them labeled "get rid of your maga merchandise here" lol

Yes, I recommend Subterranean Homesick Blues at top volume. As the poet said, you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. My whole life is listed in that song, starting with the DA must bust in early May.

Expand full comment
longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

I should write out the lyrics and memorize them. Everyone should know "weatherman" but the lines my husband knows are "the vandals took the handle." Dylan knows everything about our lives at that time. The funny thing about "DA says they must bust in early May" is that the record came out in January 1965 and I seem to remember the Alameda County DA busted the VDC (Vietnam Day Committee) office in Berkeley in May 1965. How did he know??? Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I remember. Was he prescient???
