I wish it were that easy. In 2003. the Republiscum in TX finally got a majority in the lege for the first time since the Civil War (if I remember right, that was because W was president and 9/11 9/11 9/11) and they took the opportunity to fuck up voting and voting districts beyond all recognition. True, for statewide elections (like for gov & US senator) only the final vote total counts, but gerrymandering isn't just about the number of voters by party in a district, it's also about being able to treat voters in some areas differently.

In rural counties, which are mostly red, you don't have to stand in line, miss work if it's crowded, park quite a distance away or find accomodation for disabilities, or deal with all the other obstacles to voting. In Texas, the districts that are bigger/more liberal get WAY fewer resources and a lot of restrictions, like number and convenience of polling places and election workers, how many days of early voting there are -- in fact, the lege and other state officials go out of their way to make voting in places like Houston as hard as possible without inconveniencing any of the 65 voters in a rural county.

If you want to know how a perennially-indicted, impeached state attorney general can stay in office even after a number of credible accusations of criminal behavior made by staunch conservative state attorneys who once worked for him, this is a good part of how you do it.

Expand full comment
RV maxima's avatar

Totally. I recall the Democrat woman governor but can't recall her name now. Texas wasn't gerrymandered than and neither was my home state of Wisconsin. Ann Richards. She was great! (There have only been two women who were Texas governors, and the other one was Ma Ferguson, in the 1920s-30s.

I think what probably made Ann Richards most famous was the keynote speech at the 1988 DNC convention, when she very effectively skewered George HW Bush, then in a perfect, classic "bless his little heart" moment said, "Poor George, he just can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth."

Texas Monthly magazine did this great cover of her in the '90s, wearing white fringed leathers and matching cowboy boots, on a Harley -- all photoshopped, but absolutely believable, given who she was. We could sure use her help right now.

He's up for reelection next year. Unfortunately, since Gov Dr Evil Hot Wheels has executed a hostile takeover of Harris Co elections this year (i.e. most of Houston) our chances of getting rid of him in 2024 are even slimmer. I'm hoping he'll go back to Cancun and get kidnapped or something, maybe held for ransom (which no one would actually want to pay because he might come back). Tread on the flag of Texas. I don't quite understand. How does allowing abortions "tread on the flag of Texas?" When there are so many children without homes, and it turns into a crisis, maybe then, and the children suffer. That's the saddest part. Forcing women to give birth when they are not ready to become a mother. It's not fair to the children who are forced into Foster care or adoptions. Men do not have the right to tell a woman what she can and can't do. He can walk away without a care in the world. She can't.

He doesn’t want a WOMAN to tread on the flag of Texas. Texas has abortion laws. He would rather see her die than have an abortion. I certainly believe that every woman should make her own choice, and not be ruled by the government. I, myself, made that choice many years ago.

Thank you for explaining. My parent gave me the choice when I was 17 years old. I chose to keep her, but they gave me the choice. I had a best girlfriend, Patti, when we were early senior year, she got pregnant, her parents were Republicans, they MADE HER GET AN ABORTION. The hypocrisy is mindblowing. You are against abortions until it happens to your daughter. She didn't want an abortion. A few years later she married a different man, stayed married for over 35 years (cancer got the best of her, several years ago). She miscarried her first born, she always felt like the abortion had something to do with it. She was blessed with 3 amazing boys, men now. I will always support abortion. I told this story but I will tell it again here - because stupid men like those Republicans supporting this need to hear it. My mother was pregnant in 1958 (pre-Roe) with a much wanted child. The nursery was set up. I was 2 years old. My father was running the family company for his father. At 9 months - yes - that 9 months the Republicans keep talking about - the fetus died inside of her from a premature placental separation. She couldn’t get the dead baby removed because the doctors were being threatened just like Kevin Paxton is threatening these doctors. She fortunately passed the dead baby before she went septic. But for years all I heard was how the doctors made her carry a dead baby inside her for 2 weeks. My father became PRO-CHOICE as soon as Roe became law. Those doctors had almost cost him his beautiful young wife and would have left him a widower with a 2 year old daughter in the 50ies, while he was trying to keep people employed - all for a dead baby!!! When God said be fruitful and multiply - the woman has to stay alive to have more children. After my mother’s experience the women in my family always went to Jewish gynecologists because in the Jewish religion the life of the woman is more important than any one child. The Catholic Church and some others put the life of the child over mother - but that leaves the father with a dead wife and possibly other children to raise alone. Men should be just as angry at Ken Paxton for interfering with their family’s and threatening the lives of the women they love.

I don’t have children but I bred horses for years. The life of the mare was more important than any one foal. My mother had two more children. That female Texas judge seemed disgusted that the State was interfering. My point is that the Texas Atty General isn’t just interfering on that woman’s right to her life, he is also interfering on the husband’s right to his family and his wife. What is of more importance to most Americans than their families.

I’ve seen the horror of unwanted children in a hospital up here in Massachusetts it’s rocked me to the core for 50years, I m choking up now as I write, this could get a little long. I was going to visit my 2 future brother in laws at one of the state hospitals in south eastern Mass. .Both had Duchenes Muscular Dystrophy ,good guys ,great attitudes about the shitty hands nature had dealt them, this was the 1st time I had seen them there.Anyway As I entered the hospital there was an open area in the lobby where several kids were lying on blankets in a caged play spot, the poor little things were covered in vomit, shit ,piss and covered with flies,2 of them were co- joined at thier heads, that were shaped like footballs of enormous size, the staff was doing their best to keep them clean, and cool, but they couldn’t keep up with the task, they didn’t have the funds to do it any better than they were doing (state hospital) this was the end of the Nam era,and I thought I’d seen the worst of what damage the human body could handle and live with, the guys coming back from that obscenity of Viet Nam would have been shocked. The 2 kids I mentioned weren’t the worst, and the fucken place was filled with them.I’m a 6’3” 240 pound city guy and I couldn’t stop crying,The staff had to get me to a chair to keep me from hitting the deck, fuck I’m crying now remembering that scene from Hell. When I got my shit straight I asked one staff member What was the reason they were all there together, she told me they were all abandoned from all over the state, they were found in dumpsters ,sewers, thrown from over passes, all kinds of places were garbage was thrown.she said that most of them had been there since they were babies, she said that back in the 60’s it was much much worse many more than now, this is the mid70’s.she added the lifting of the abortion laws had greatly affected the situation. To make a long story longer I’ll add that I was told that a good percentage of the damaged babies they were caring for now were left by their mothers who had no choice, they couldn’t afford or provide for their children they were giving up,they had others to take care for.The point of this tragic story is that abortion is a necessary procedure for millions of people who are so completely ignored by the government and it’s middle age bullshit laws, regulations and lack of compassion that they have nowhere to turn in a life threatening situation that completely ignores their existence, until one of their holier than thou (we know what’s best for you laws) is broken,Know what Fuck You you fucken hypocrites you fucken idiots you should have to live with the consequences of the laws you made for others you fucken self righteous monsters you should be ashamed of yourself and what these laws have done to good people’s lives and the poor kids that suffer because of them.If I knew Gods existence was fact I’d pray to him ,her ,it that YOU and your fucken self righteous asses fried in Hell .

Harm to the state? Let’s talk harm to that baby, who, by all accounts, if it is born will die an excruciating death. Nice pro-life thing they’ve got going on there.

Yes, I pointed this out yesterday on another site. The baby will die in agony and they don't care and yet one of their main talking (screaming) points against abortion is that the fetus can feel pain. Well, better the brief pain of an abortion than the agony of dying over the course of hours, possibly days.

They're not pro-life. They're pro-zygote

I think you may be right. I also think this is less about a zygote, a fetus, or a baby and more about a population of men who resent that a woman or a woman’s body can make a decision about what he believes he has created. I clearly remember the days when a woman needed her husband’s permission to get birth control. Her body, her potential belonged exclusively to him.

Yep. That’s the life I lived. First question in my first real job interview: when are you planning on starting a family?

I had to get my husband’s Permission to have my tubes tied after my second baby. I did not want more children because I had figured out I would probably end up a single parent.

Not even pro-zygote. They're pro-control of women. Insecure, power-hungry, misogynistic mother-fuckers!!! Texas used to be a decent place - glad I moved out!

Two comments...

If a farmer has a cow that is endangered by a pregnancy with a compromised lethal diagnosis calf, he does not have to consult a judge before the veterinarian takes care of it so the cow does not die and may have calves in the future. Women are being relegated to positions BELOW cattle in their rights.

If they want to prosecute everyone for abortions, then the fathers should also be met with consequences, and at the very least lose their reproductive organs like these women might. (OK this father and other caring parents etc are not my point, my point is that the men making babies bear no issue at all, rapists, asshats, and all)

This is a great! Your words are exactly how this should be explained to them. Why are women’s reproductive rights less than that of animal (example; cow)? This would be something that I know would make some people uncomfortable, however, it would make them stop and think about it.

Sense we believe that we are more superior to animals! It would it at the core of their minds. Please get it out on all social media platforms! Please!!! 🙏🏾

Please excuse the mess as my head exploded when I read Paxton’s statement. Cox proved her case (which itself is a travesty), but apparently there really is no exception. Since it’s too late for Paxton to be aborted, I suggest a lobotomy.
