I'm being told that as a constitutional monarch, King Charles has no choice but to go where they send him — but my premise remains that no country should be sending its representatives to meet with Donny

Irascible Ink's avatar

Steve Schmidt over at The Warning agrees, but he had a good take on Chuck's Congressional address. https://steveschmidt.substack.com/p/the-optics-were-disgraceful-but-the?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=ubvcb

It's so crazy that Charles got a standing o for mentioning all the things Congress is refusing to acknowledge or do anything about.

Yeah I thought the same thing. Very weird

2Cats2Furious's avatar

Lawrence had some clips of the speech on his show last night. I thought it was hilarious when Charles got a standing ovation after describing the need for checks & balances on executive power, and Vance and Holy Mike had to join in.

Jane in NC's avatar

It was Keir Starmer's unrelenting campaign to suck up to Trump that forced Charles and Camilla to endure to endure Donny 'WeDon'tNeedNoPro-to-col Uh-huh' and his stone faced rent-a-wife.

Eskaveeda's avatar

Starmer's getting desperate because of the Mandelson situation and may be booted out of his job.

Jane in NC's avatar

Yeah, the Mandelson thing is taking its toll. As it should, IMO. Starmer was warned about him and hired him into his cabinet anyway.

rlritt's avatar

In all fairness ing Charles is the Head of State, not the head of government. His role is to represent British history and culture.

While Trump was raised by a sleazy slumlord from Queens, to be a greedy, lying schiester.

Has anybody thought that the new building Bunker ballroom is going to be Trump’s control room for the 2026 midterm elections perhaps they’re making it super secret and super fortified for a reason. Since he doesn’t plan on leaving, but they know that there will be riots in the streets if he takes over the elections, he’s going to need a secure bunker. Call the underground White House to continue to manage the affairs of the nation, speak and play propaganda from all state run media. Maybe I have too much time on my hands? lol

BJ Zamora's avatar

I thought they got rid of that and the Lord’s Prayer in Texas schools in 1965 when the parents in my high school in Houston (which was over 50% Jewish) sued to stop it.

I think they need more lawsuits to insist on Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist , and Hindu prayers are also posted.

And we must not forget Cherokee, Apache, Comanche, and other truly Native American prayers!

Mary Greenwald's avatar

OR. . .teach every child American and World History, English, several foreign languages, Math and Science and Civics Leave the prayers to religious leaders after school time and in a building for particular religions or just under the clear blue sky. Keep it out of the schools,

rlritt's avatar

Especially since American schools are not considered the best. But we dont really want to raise smart thinking adults do we? If that were true, Trump wouldn't have been elected.

Lisa Kent's avatar

How about a moment of silence? Everyone can say their own prayer inside their own head.

Cyndi's avatar

When they tried that in my high school decades ago, they had to stop after a few months ... Because they discovered that the students would just fall asleep at their desks!

rlritt's avatar

I agree. If parents want their kids pray school, send them to private or parochial school.

Cassandrascat's avatar

After seeing Graham’s desperation, I thought perhaps it’s a bomb shelter so trump can use those nukes he thinks there’s no reason to have if he can’t play with them.

Mike Hammer's avatar

Maybe the bunker after the midterms and fall of democracy. They will militarize DC and that will be the underground White House. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! lol

Kim Steeves's avatar

Having him hold up in a bunker under the east wing may work in our favour, could we not just barricade the door from the outside and call it his tomb?

rlritt's avatar

I would lend a hand in that effort!

Cathy Wray's avatar

Cyndi's avatar

rlritt's avatar

I cant imagine it will be finished by then, unless they build the bunker first before there even is a building.

Miselle's avatar

Hands up✋🏼 if in lieu of a journalist taking up the "Tiedrich Challenge" you would have loved to have had Charles spill the beans on all he knows about EPSTEIN, live, right in front of our entire CONGRESS!

Sure would be nice to know what finally drove him to oust his own brother! I mean, it's not like this is the 1500s or whatever, and Andrew was going to challenge him to the throne!

Jean Jacoby's avatar

Um, given the interesting history of the British monarchy, Andrew got away with his head still attached to his neck, so there is that. I think Charles had just had enough of his awful younger brother--who was, bafflingly, his mummy's favorite, along with her treasonous uncle.

Lisa K. Obrien's avatar

Andrew’s former wife, Sarah Ferguson, took her daughters to have lunch with Epstein after he was released from prison. She was looking for him to help strengthen her brand, apparently.

arne link's avatar

I believe that she was desperate for Epstein to give her more money. It is documented that he had supported her generously with "loans".

Merrill's avatar

Todd Blanche has joined the cast of Trump's "magic reality" show at the White House. In what paranoid world is posting a picture of 86-47 in sea shells a crime? Certainly not in America, a country ruled by laws not men. But if you step into Trump's paranoid, magical world, you can believe America is a country ruled by just one man and everything is GREAT. Unfortunately for Trump and his loyalist clinging to power, Americans are abandoning that world and coming back to s country of laws.

arne link's avatar

It's a f'n photograph, for God's sake. We can get ten years in prison for taking a photo? It's just a distraction from the Epstein files.

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

The case should not only be summarily dismissed with prejudice (meaning it can't be brought again), but the lawyers who signed onto it should be investigated by their state's board of bar overseers for abuse of process.

Lynn Van Haren's avatar

Todd Blanche was gone from being a decent lawyer at SDNY to a sock puppet

rlritt's avatar

And since when is joking about a leader's demise against the law? Its not like you're making plans. If that were true, anyone who ever told an Ex "Drop dead" would be in jail.

Linda Weide's avatar

My understanding is that he needs to protect himself and keep from them digging deeper. So, Epstein is probably not a topic he wants to cover.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

The charges against Andrew potentially involve treason -- providing secret government info to non-allies. Virginia Giuffre's battering/rape by Andrew did not get his titles removed.

arne link's avatar

The Epstein files contain much, much more than the raping of young girls and, possibly, murder. There is a huge confluence of spy wear and money laundering. That is the real story they want to keep hidden.

Linda Weide's avatar

I know. The murder to me is the biggest issue though, and that could get Trump the death penalty in Florida.

Linda Weide's avatar

Thanks for the reminder Sharon. The treason charges are not what has stuck in my mind.

My state's attorney general, Andrea Campbell, is among the many Democratic AGs fighting back against the Trump administration. (I'm in MA.)

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

Peter's avatar

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

The 5th Circuit -- can we call it a 5th Column yet? -- has OKed Texas's anti-constitutional requirement to post the 10 Commandments in classrooms. Can't wait to see how SCOTUS majority handles this one. Will they 86 the First Amendment and declare the U.S. a Christian nation? It'll have to be a *Protestant* Christian nation, of course, since they're not big fans of Pope Leo these days.

Mary Greenwald's avatar

SCOTUS is a big fan of Pope Leo. Only 2 are not Catholic!

devourerofpancakes's avatar

That doesn't mean a whole lot. Look at how much of catholic teaching the conservatives are willing to ignore.

Bob's avatar

I doubt Alito, who is Opus Dei, likes Leo one bit. Nor Roberts or Gorsuch.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Was thinking the same thing, but I'd for sure add Thomas and probably Kavanaugh and Barrett to the list. As I just noted elsewhere, Gorsuch was raised Catholic but is now an Episcopalian.

Bob's avatar

Barrett is some stripe of evangelical. Episcopalian, ie, Church of England, ie, Catholicism with divorce and less guilt.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

This doesn't follow. I expect that Sotomayor is a fan, and probably Jackson (nondenominational Protestant) and Kagan (Jewish) admire him. Last I looked, 3 of the 9 weren't Catholic. Gorsuch was raised Catholic but is now Episcopalian. High-church Episcopalianism can look a lot like Catholicism in ritual, but Episcopalians aren't guided by the pope in Rome. JD Vance, btw, a recent convert to Catholicism, said earlier this month that "it's very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology." Which many of us greeted with "WTF??"

Bob's avatar

I didn’t say the minority were in that camp. The important thing is the Catholic justices, JD Vance are tight with Leonard Leo, who is Opus Dei, a right-Catholic lay organization that didn’t like Pope Francis and most likely don’t like Pope Leo.

Of course Episcopalians don’t follow the pope because the roots are Church of England, Henry the VIII’s creation so he could dictate when someone can get divorced instead of the pope having that authority.

My father was a Presbyterian minister and we knew a few Episcopalian rectors, one of whom was my dad’s best friend.

Lisa K. Obrien's avatar

It seemed more like a grimace.

Linda Weide's avatar

It looked like a Botox grimace. I am noticing these things because my daughter always points out things like Plastic surgery, Botox and AI in everything these days. So, now I am more noticing the Botox. It looked like it was hard for her to arrange the smile on her face because she had to stretch frozen skin. Whatever the reason, she looked quite frightening. If I were Trump I would make sure I had security around me when I went to sleep.

arne link's avatar

Those little half smiles were very weird. Maybe she had gas?

Linda Weide's avatar

Perhaps. I just now that her face looked like it was hard to crack a smile when she remembered too, and it looked like the most frightening smile in a horror movie.

Suki Herr's avatar

I know Democrats would have to win a veto proof majority for this to work, but there’s no reason there should not be a code of ethics for SCOTUS instituted.

A high bar type code of ethics. John Roberts could resign or his wife could quit her job.

Clarence Thomas could resign or Ginny Thomas could cut out her shenanigans, all of them. I know Donald Trump will still be president, but as Mitch McConnell taught us, we don’t have to put confirmation up for a vote.

Cyndi's avatar

All of that just requires applying the rules and laws around lower court judges to the top court too. As for who would hear the cases, I suggest requiring Congressional impeachment procedures.

Suki Herr's avatar

Many of the lower courts have ethics rules, SCOTUS does not. I’m all for impeachment for justices which the constitution allows, but which? How many do we pick?

Gorsuch shouldn’t be there, Kavanaugh should never have survived confirmation, McConnell violated his own rules&stretched ethics to get Coney Barrett confirmed after presidential voting had started. Clarence&Ginny Thomas are, in my opinion, the most corrupt. Alito is so mired in ideology it dampens his intellect.

I choose Roberts. His wife’s job is a $20million ethics question

John Kendrick's avatar

John Roberts and the other members of the “Sacred Six” religiously ideological justices forming the right-wing of that court persist in their perspective that only white Christian’s men are worthy of fully participating in our democratic republic.

Our nation is in such disarray that it takes Charles, a monarch from the nation we seceded from 250 years ago for more individual rights and personal liberty, to come here and remind us of how precious freedom is. And it's a certainty that although in the past Charles has been derided as not being the sharpest tool in the royal family shed, nearly every admonishment of his went right over the fat orange empty head of the leader of this formerly sane nation. trump makes Charles look like the most intelligent, articulate, and rational leader around.

I see King Charles' visit very differently. In fact, his speech made to the joint session of Congress yesterday was nothing short of inspiring and, even better, hit Trump in his ample gut gracefully but pointedly. BOTH sides of Congress clapped and stood up several times in agreement with the points made in the King's speech. Clearly the King was sent to smooth some of the orange asshole's ruffled feathers; indeed he was the perfect Trojan horse. In the end, if nothing else, it just felt so damn good to hear an intelligent speech delivered smartly and sincerely with no personal opinions, stupid comments, threats or worse, non-sensical stories that have nothing to do with the purpose of the speech. Our ties to the U.K. are more important than the pig that's currently grubbing up the oval office. Our ties to the rest of our allies are, too, for that matter. So, if King Charles had to do some kissing up in person, so what. He did none of that in his eloquent soeech. At this point everyone just wants the piece of shit not to, literally, go nuclear! Me, included.

Joyce's avatar

My sense is that any smoothing over and/or kissing up was de rigeur and done by rote. The real purpose of the visit was to deliver that dagger of a speech, which Charles did, may I say, to the hilt.

It was blistering in content and delivered with immaculate, deft accuracy.... "And, Mr. Speaker........"

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Well said! "Kissing up in person" is part of what diplomacy is about, after all -- not that anyone in the current administration understands that, of course.

Jennifer Dyke's avatar

Right. I get that it's particularly falling because everyone hates Trump, but it still has to happen. No matter what, we'll get rid of Trump one way or another. After all, he's helping us every time he opens his stupid mouth or writes another Truth Social missive filled with threats!

P123Sunny's avatar

Welp his supportive comment about Ukr forced JD to have to STAND UP AND CLAP (weakly)… so there WAS that…

Joyce's avatar

This was a thing of beauty in a speech full of perfectly executed and delivered shade.

George in Atlanta's avatar

But it was like talking trash to golden retrievers.

P123Sunny's avatar

Refused to meet the Epstein survivors, (ongoing investigations), hm

Joyce's avatar

Yeah--Tapper asked a British journalist the other day about why Charles didn't just meet with the survivors (in a tone that suggested Charles was being nefarious); the British guy explained, at length, the complication such a meeting would cause, endangering the case in England, because Pervy Andrew is Charles' brother and the case is under the purview of the throne. Tapper/his staff didn't bother to do an actual bit of independent research to find this out ahead of time.....

And, in a close contender for 'what the fuck is wrong with you?', the British journalist then observed that Howard Liar Lutnick was attending whatever to-do Charles and Camilla were inflicted with at the White House and noted he'd like to discuss the inclusion of such a person on the invitation list with Tapper.

In a retreat that approached light speed, Tapper instantly changed the subject.

P123Sunny's avatar

Legacy media VERY comfortable operating on ‘tone’ and ‘vibes’… how far it’s fallen - just sayin

Joyce's avatar

Actual journalist would've researched why Charles would not meet with the Epstein-Trump survivors and then, if the topic was going to be broached, would've framed it as 'verify that this is the reason why,' rather than framing it as a kind of 'gotcha.' The lack of basic effort in his job made Tapper look like a fool.

Jayme Wolworth's avatar

Some good news, Arizona doesn't have to hand over their voter rolls (for now anyway). Another Trump defeat.

I'm still flabergasted that a Grand Jury would indict Comey over a picture of beach art. WTF I know they only hear one side of the story but really? Comey didn't even make the damn thing. The old saying, "you can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich" totally applies here.

Also thank god that 86 doesn't mean to kill someone, otherwise there would be a lot more dead people in this country.

I'm thinking the press should be asking every GOP congressperson "what the fuck is wrong with you?" daily from now on. They seem to be under a spell of some kind the way they defend the lying shitter in chief.
