The irony is that if that concentration camp was built by undocumented immigrants, it would have been done properly.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

every day there are comments so good that I'm jealous I didn't think of it first, and use it in my post. this is one of them

SPW's avatar

I’m now fortunate to live among the great people of Central America and am witness to how hard these folks work; many times, 7 days a week in order to make their money to live. My Spanish is halting at best but they kindly put up with me. We are different but only in ways that don’t really matter in the long run. 47 has flayed the skin from my country by terrorizing the very people who hold the US together. It’s unforgivable and has to be stopped or the US will cease to exist as we’ve known it.

Stranger Than Friction's avatar

I feel absolutely sick about this. I feel like I'm going to have to spend the rest of my days telling people I meet that I am not MAGA, never have been, never voted for Repugnicans, and yet every thing I tried to do to counter them failed. I hate this mean craven cruelty, this autocratic kakistocracy, the hateful stupidity of it all. I don't want to hate, because it is corrosive to the hater, not just the hated. Yet I despise each and every person who enabled and worked toward the state we are in now. I am unable to forgive or forget.

celeste k.'s avatar

Me, too, and not being able to forgive is painful to me, too.

kdsherpa's avatar

I think that the U.S. has already ceased to exist.

Lisa's avatar

Ooops, once again I commented too soon! Agree completely!

kdsherpa's avatar

Nah, any comment that speaks truth is worth repeating many times!

Veronica von Bernath Morra's avatar

SPW: wherever you are, we. the expats, are the luckiest ones. Your comment is understood and agreed with. . My heart and soul are bleeding.

SPW's avatar

I’m in Panama in the country with various cows, chickens, horses and various other animals one can find in a rural setting. I’m 5 miles outside the third largest city in the country which is perfect. I’m an economic refugee as my little corner of NC got ridiculously expensive after Covid. My son lives just down the street with his partner and he pretty much takes care of seeing to anything I might need. He’s been down here 5 yrs so knows most of the ins and outs of life here. That’s made an easy transition.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

I can't even express how envious I am, SPW. Had we the means, my husband and I would be making plans to leave the country.

Lorraine Parish's avatar

Hey SPW. I now live (3.5 years) with the great people of Mexico. I ditto everything you said and my Spanish stinks too but they know I try. I love my cleaning lady like a sister and my gardener like a brother. Even with all this goodness around me, since Jan 21, I feel a deep sadness many days I just can't shake. I feel like there will be a breaking point not far away and all hell will break loose. I sure hope so.

Lisa's avatar

I feel like it's already ceased to exist as I've known it.

Terri Nighswonger's avatar

So true. How do we stop it?

Diane Kempf's avatar

Excellent point. You should see the incredible ass busting work they do in my neighborhood...roofing, carpet install, landscaping, pouring patios, etc. None of us give a shit about their legal status.

Melinda Morrell's avatar

Immigrants literally rebuilt New Orleans after Katrina. How soon we forget.

Bonnie Council's avatar

See, and therein lies the problem. They really do do the work so many Americans don't want to do, and those Americans are pissed off about that. So, here we are. Somehow they think getting rid of all the immigrants is going to suddenly make Americans line up to work like slaves for minimum wages, and that's just not going to happen. What will happen, however, is tons and tons and tons of work will not get done. Period. This is what my mother would call cutting off your own nose to spite your face.

Dayna Keiser's avatar

I live in Maryland and when I lived in Ocean City I worked in a hotel and saw the Latino ladies there working in housekeeping. Very nice people and worked long hard shifts without a word of complaint and a smile for everyone. Nearly all the construction work was being done by the Latino men. My current neighborhood here in Baltimore has a large Latino population. These people work, they own businesses. It’s a sin what our government is doing to them.

Victoria Wilson's avatar

Yes, Latino folk are the new black people.Demonization of skin color is despicable and has been with us since the country’s inception.Throw in demonization of Irish,Italian,Chinese,Native Americans and many more groups and you have a cruel fucking melting pot.White hubris sucks

Deborah Hunter's avatar

When I grew up in upstate NY, we would go to Ocean City on vacation. Loved it there. Especially the crab soup at Phillips. I think they're out of business now?

T L Mills's avatar

I think there is a deeper desire under it all...to create a white nationalist state where women are in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant and white men are once again at the top of the patriarchy. Somehow all these young guys (who hate everybody and everything...but think it's all women's fault and can't get a date because they are misogynistic asses), think this will bring them to the apex of the heap--not realizing the top of the heap is already in place and they will still be on the bottom as the new wage slaves. MAGAs have bought into some imaginary dream of re-creating the 50's when it is no longer possible.

Bonnie Council's avatar

All part of Project 2025's agenda. Sick. Sick. Sick.

rlritt's avatar

A 1950s that didn't exist.

T L Mills's avatar

You're quite correct, the MAGAs dreams of a better world in the 1950's is exactly that: a dream of imagined delusions. The "rising tide" did lift some boats but certainly not all boats and we were still a country of unequal justice. Clearly we still are. If we had equal justice, at least one bloviating evil jackhat who has 34 convictions and yet, still unsentenced, would be in jail.

rlritt's avatar

Minimum wages?! These undocumented workers often get less than minimum wages, especially seasonal farm workers.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

I don't think people outside California know how hard they work. They're not the homeless. They live indoors. The homeless live on sidewalks.

Victoria Wilson's avatar

Hardest working group of people ever.We had a group of 3 take down a tree and trim bushes and they did an excellent job in just a couple of hours.Amazing.

Bob Bowden's avatar

Wage slavery for undocumented immigrants in 2025 is Slavery 5.1, and in some ways it’s even worse than the original Slavery 1.0 in 1860. In v1.0, a roof and food was provided. The modern 5.1 version leaves it to the wage slave to find a roof and some food, until the slave and family are deemed expendible and feedable to alligators, but first they must spend some time in a leaky tent for the purpose of performative political theater

T L Mills's avatar

😰🤯😢🤬💀👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

Patricia Gomes's avatar

My community has a large group of Guatemalans. HARD workers doing the jobs that many Americans won’t do— they are peaceful, family oriented and kind. Fish houses, car washes, recycle plants—the list is long. I have never seen any of them holding cardboard signs at the lights , or begging outside stores. They shop as a family -Mom, Dad and kids. They don’t bother anyone. Did I mention that they are HARD workers ?

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

They used to do that work.

Teri Gelini's avatar

It's only the haters who have to constantly feed their egos while the bulk of American knows we need to help each other and this is not just a "whites onl Club" that we live in. As I have read before the only true Americans are the Native American Indians. So drumpf and company should be deported with his entire cabinet and the first stop needs to be Alligator Auswhich!

rlritt's avatar

I'm waiting for them to start rounding up Native Americans. Since many Latinos and Mexicans are also of Native American ancestry, they are technically the REAL Americans. Maybe they will force the Native Americans back on the Reservations.

Teri Gelini's avatar

I hope they don't do that but the reservation is better than Sudan, CECOT or some there foreign land. Just hateful and cruelty

rlritt's avatar

True. And some reservations have their own police force so the ICE goons will think twice before chasing them there.

Teri Gelini's avatar

Hopefully they will be safe

PTW's avatar

Already happening. Love these ladies telling the CBP that THEY are the outsiders!

Denise Donaldson's avatar

They don’t even acknowledge history.

Lisa's avatar

Three Latino men, tattooed to the hilt, put in our countertops from 8am to 8:30pm to get it done. Best guys ever to talk to and attempt to reassure all white folks aren't ignorant hillbillies who hate any color other than pale. We tipped them "bigly" and bid them godspeed in this hateful environment.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Agreed, Diane. I've never seen people work as hard as the migrants who tore off our old roof and replaced it last summer. They did it in one day, with three days' notice. All the other estimates were two to three days for the work. They were very friendly, very careful of our yard, and quite appreciative of the snacks and water I put out. No lie---four days later, four tornadoes roared through within a couple miles of us. We got very high winds. Not a single shingle came loose.

I don't know where the crew members originally came from (possibly Guatemala) and I don’t care what their status was. I can't say enough good things about them.

Rick Calegari's avatar

You can count on it. Just think, with all of that rain, those gators would have easier access to Swamp a Lago and maybe have a meet and greet with all the despicable fucks who are visiting and can't wait to open this hellhole up. I know this a stretch but hoping no migrants will ever have to live in these inhumane conditions at America's Auschwitz. The only ones who deserve an extended stay are those in the sadistic GOP who find extreme cruelty to be hilarious.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

Should we just stop referring to Project 2025 and start referring to it as the "The Nazification of the United States of America by Project 2025" or maybe the "Donald J. Trump Nazification of the United States of America as Envisioned by Project 2025"? Let's not mince words or terms any more. I think we're here now.

Victoria Wilson's avatar

How about Trump Nazi Project 2025 Pact?

T L Mills's avatar

I have writing all day about how I think Trump, Miller, Loomer, Mace, Noem, Homan, Bondi et.al as well as every fucking GOP Rep and Senator and ESPECIALLY every broken- brained MAGA who thinks this is awesome need to be incarcerated there for at least a month in the summer. Perhaps they will think differently about their cruelty...but somehow, I doubt it. We have created a country full of sick, twisted, cruel and sadistic assholes. May the gods and goddesses forgive us.

Fredi Hensley's avatar

You forgot the SCOTUS. Six yummy richly fed MAGAs ready for chomping.

T L Mills's avatar

Oh, they are definitely included!

Terri Nighswonger's avatar

Trump being the first guest.

T L Mills's avatar

EXACTLY...and Miller the second. Kristi and Homan third and fourth...and after we house all the Senate and House GOP, plus the top asses of DoJ--particularly Bondi and Vought...and well, the entire appointed mess of MAGAts, and infiltrated White unChristian Nationalists, some jackass MAGAt governors and rotate in (for a few weeks at a time), a selection of the most fervent low-level MAGA cheerleaders of Alligator Auschwitz. Tell 'em it's a Foribble vacation and a chance at being on a gameshow.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Yes. He can personally demonstrate how to run from alligators. OTOH, he'd likely poison them if they tried to ingest his bloated carcass.

Marian Goldsmith's avatar

2 days should be enough to show them what they're banking (literally) on, not a month. It would cost less. Ok bad jokes but you get what I mean.

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

It would be a shame if they declared the Lago a drop zone for all relocated hungry swamp creatures and I don’t mean just GOP fucks I mean pythons and crocs. What greasy food for the animals though.

Rick Calegari's avatar

It would very greasy especially if 90 weight Pete showed up.

Stephen Schiff's avatar

Explaining why MAGAts are so fearful of immigrants: The latter WANT to work and do a good job,and don't have time for complaining about the "others".

Declan's avatar

The buildings in many of Hitlers concentration camps were built using the labor of 'guests of the state'

Kathy H's avatar

And that's where all of this has always been going, even more of a return to slave labor than even 40 years of escalating exploitation & Ai is providing.

Major Kong's avatar

Another irony is that these people who are cheering this horror are the same morons who believed that Barack Obama and Joe Biden were building FEMA concentration camps under Walmarts. With the help of the Chinese. And I would guess that 80% of these cretins have "Don't Tread on Me" license plates and bumper stickers. "Oh, it's OK if you tread on THOSE people. "

Aw com'on. That would be too rational. And humane. It doesn't match their (ir)religious beliefs.

T L Mills's avatar

Nope...them Hispanics ain't white enuff and theys talk funny with them accents. MAGAs want everybody to look like them, talk like them and believe like they do...

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Sick fucks is right. It’s the Orwellian endgame nightmare they are playing.

Sarah #1's avatar

The MAGA’s pro-concentration camp wing is downright gleeful about their nightmarish Alligator Auschwitz schemes, an open embrace of sadism disguised as policy. Their response to outrage? Call everyone a communist, like a broken record from a century ago. It’s projection at its finest: they cheer on government overreach, cheer as the state brutalizes the vulnerable, and accuse others of tyranny. But their labels and name calling doesn’t work anymore. They are CRUELISTS in a political cult obsessed with domination, punishment, and fear. Their ideology isn’t built on principles or values, but on inflicting pain and blaming the powerless. They don’t care about freedom, only control. They don’t seek justice, only vengeance. They’re authoritarian fetishists. Let’s call them what they are.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

Thanks so much for calling it Alligator Auschwitz. As a Californian, who can drive a few blocks to Highway 80 and actually see Alcatraz, this concentration camp should not be named after Alcatraz, or alligators either. Name it what it is, Florida's Own Nazi Concentration Camp. Or find a better name... But leave out names from California and living species of plants and animals. Maybe the Trump Nazi Concentration Camp.

Carthago Delenda Est's avatar

Alcatraz was a prison. People could serve their time and be released from Alcatraz. That abomination in the Everglades isn't a prison; it's a detention camp. People will never get out of there alive. Huge difference.

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

Like Nazi 2.0? Really they need a new name Nazi is overused in the world already this group can help poor Jeff make something out of this shitty ‘government’ but it’s not the gov’t it’s a cult. The big bad cult uses what George Osawa used to call the worst thing that ever happened to our democracy but dopey don has to out do that by miles, since there is no more democracy they should build a shitty death rail road, one way only. How about the ‘Death Cult Special Railway’, no that doesn’t roll off the forked tongue, I know ‘The Biden Special’ blame him.

Terri Nighswonger's avatar

Yes it is a cult. But non cult people repugs are cowards. Big ones.

Declan's avatar

If this bill passes, may I assume that may be another straw that broke camels back and we shall see many...who have the resources....emigrate to Canada, Panama, Portugal/Spain and other European locales?? Michael Cohen got his Canadian citizenship (lucky bastard) but he has advantages.

Marlee Ostrow's avatar

It's a conundrum. I think maybe I could afford to emigrate, probably not to a place I'd want to spend the rest of my years. But, that feels like desertion. We need to all stand and fight.

Brenda McDonald's avatar

Yep. My sis and I discuss this everyday. Costa Rica? Panama? We lived in the Canal Zone when we were kids and love Panama. But it’s far from family, I would miss my little grandchildren terribly.

Dr J's Sanity Space's avatar

Marlee: I have the same dilemma.

Melinda Morrell's avatar

My husband and I have been talking about Spain. We have friends there.

Kathleen Weber's avatar

The leaks are not a bug; they are a feature. Make the concentration camp inmates more miserable.

Koko in AZ's avatar

Did someone say FEMA spent $450M building that tent in the middle of the Everglades? And it flooded within days? How have Repugnants been able to get Americans to believe for 40 years that they aren't the Party of government waste?

Kate's avatar

And the latest is that floriduh hasn’t even requested the money from the feds, so looks like the state is on the hook so far for DeSantis’ Dachau.

Brenda Doherty's avatar

As a Floridian, I look ahead to the hurricane season with trepidation. MoRon spent our FEMA money to throw up this sheety piece of construction to torture other humans. What a great Christian! Jeff, thanks for calling out the incorrect use of the verb “was”. Mace is an idiot as well as a crazy woman!

Patty Mooney's avatar

Didn't Ron sharpen his sadism chops in Guantanamo when he was in the military?

Lisa's avatar

He's gonna have to dig out his plastic white go go boots when he visits AA now. (Jeans tucked in of course.)

HI2thDoc's avatar

For those Floridiots who keep voting for him, this is on them

Brenda Doherty's avatar

Fortunately, MoRon is gone 1/27. He’s looking for a federal job. Hence, the Trump a- - kissing!

HI2thDoc's avatar

But to his and his awful wife's delight, the damage he hath wrought will continue to fuck Florida up

Brenda Doherty's avatar

They’re leaving with the money they stole.

Elizabeth Ellis's avatar

Somehow desatan got FEMA money to pay for it.

Kate's avatar

Not yet according to state senator Carlos Smith.

CroneEver's avatar

They didn't spend that much money on it: it was already an air base, so all they had to do was get the prison system vendors to supply the cages, etc. I figure maybe $50 million, and that was $400 million for Trump and DeSantis' respective pockets.

Lisa's avatar

Also not talked about enough is that immigrant workers pay taxes! A myth that they didn't debunked long ago. So that revenue is gone. They don't qualify for SS but they have to pay into it if they're working for a "law abiding employer". So the debt will be much much higher in the end without that revenue.

Marian Goldsmith's avatar

Good question. So far we know some answers but not the kind that can change this sh*t. Sigh

Terri Nighswonger's avatar

They are just fucking stupid.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

I've always said that there are millions of assholes in this evil country who would be more than happy to serve as concentration camp guards, and I was yelled at for overreacting and being hysterical. Son of a bitch, looks like I was right.

Clint Opine's avatar

I would have just clicked the like button, but I want to be clear it's a very sad thumbs up.

Dina's avatar

Oh, we're always "overreacting" about everything, aren't we! But when it comes to pass, suddenly everyone forgets our warnings.

bruce somers's avatar

Isn't that Bannon's plan?

Dina's avatar

It soitenly is. Just keep that shit flooding everything and no one remembers anything.

Terri Nighswonger's avatar

I don’t think this is over reacting.

Dina's avatar

MAGA says we are. While we're screaming to get people to actually see what's happening, they're all like, "Nothing to see here, move along..."

Marlee Ostrow's avatar

I just want to point out that all those willing guards are going to be collateral damage once a hurricane hits.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

Oh, there will be plenty of camps that are not in hurricane zones. Expect to see them in every state.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

Trump has turned us into the shithole country he's always screaming about. Took less than six months and he's just getting started. Wait until his stormtroopers are in every town and the attempts to prevent the midterms really get underway.

shee-rah's avatar

His stormtroopers are already in my city.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

ICE agents were caught on video pissing on the grounds of an LA school in broad daylight.

They're not in my town yet, but it's just a matter of time. ICE is an employment agency for Proud Boys and various other militia trash who have been waiting for this since 1/6.

D Kitterman's avatar

It is time to appeal to the ICC (International Criminal Court) at the Hague in the Netherlands for crimes against humanity.

TrumpCo isn't interested so much in deportation of supposed criminal immigrants, some of which are American citizens, they are much more interested in monetizing and profiting off of prisons keeping immigrants locked up and tortured in horrific circumstances. Pam Bondi, Homan, and likely the entire cabinet is invested in the Geo group and other for profit prisons. That's why they want $45 billion for homeland security, so that they can steal and pocket tax dollars for bullshit. That is what this shit is. Craven motherfuckers.

PlasticFish's avatar

"Some of WHOM", please. These are people we're talking about, not inanimate objects.

Thanks!

D Kitterman's avatar

Well, that WAS my point.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Yes, it would only be "which" if the reference regarded Bondi, Homan and the Cabinet.

Terri Nighswonger's avatar

Yes. How do we get this accomplished?

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

I don't think we can do that. We're not members...

Jeff, here in AZ, Andy Biggs mega MAGA who wants to be governor, has suggested concentration camps be built in the desert here bc we got lizards, rattlers, coyotes, scorpions.. This is Sheriff Joes wet dream where back in the day he put camps out in the desert, tents, green bologna sandwiches and dressed the inmates in pink uniforms.. The BBB is to benefit all the billionaires, 85 at last count. So people lose health care, food subsidies, nursing homes closing, rural hospitals closing.. all this and more for just 85 people. In addition, the $$ for ICE eclipse all the money for BOP and creates a Gestapo…people…it’s not going to stop with brown folks… Miller wants to revoke citizenship from Black folks…we are on a slippery slope here.. any marginalized community can be the next target… no one is safe… Happy 4th Fellow Travelers.

Jan Moon's avatar

The 4th of July was always such a joyful holiday. This year not so much.

Mingo's avatar

So glad I was redistricted out of Biggs district. He's always competing with the bad boys. He'd call his desert camp Amphibian Alcatraz. What ever they want to call their concentration camps it's all no bueno. Taco Don pardoned old sheriff Joe who should be six feet under by now.

Cyndi's avatar

Isn't the state still paying off the legal judgments against that a-hole in a desert?

bruce somers's avatar

Fastball Fredo's avatar

This is true. I keep hoping that when it's proven that millions of people, particularly children, have died due to the ending of USAID and to this stupid bill that those deaths will keep these people up at night and that for the rest of their lives they'll be haunted by the deaths. Then I remember they don't give a shit about anyone but themselves. They strangled their conscience in its crib and then believe they're good, upstanding Christians who love Jesus and are pro-life.

And, Jeff, thanks for correcting Nancy Mace's grammar. That particular mistake is one of my pet peeves. Another one is people who say, "I seen" instead of "I saw". It also still annoys me when people pronounce the "t' in often, but apparently, that's become acceptable. BUT I DON'T LIKE IT!

Look, let’s call it what it really is: a death camp. Those shoddily constructed buildings obviously won’t be able to withstand even a moderate tropical storm, much less a hurricane. And the DHS sure as hell isn’t going to evacuate hundreds and hundreds of people in the event of a storm. On top of which, there are only the most basic medical facilities there; if someone develops a contagious disease like Norovirus or bird flu, there is no way for them to be isolated from the rest of the population. The cages they intend to keep people in are small and close together, and disease will spread like wildfire.

If you look at the elements required for an accusation of committing crimes against humanity, the Trump administration had already met at least three. The ICC can persecute those who commit these crimes regardless of whether the country is a member or not. I hope I live long enough to see Trump, Miller, and Noem brought before the ICC.
