Jeff, that’s one of the most ‘straight’, thoughtful, sweet and sensitive postings which I’m sure your family, most of all appreciate. I’m sure that most of us can relate with those same things that you are thankful for. I’m sure I speak for most, if not all on here who are thankful for the levity that you have provided to help get us through these recent years. Old Molly Irvin’s quotes. Now there’s a very much missed political hot mama. I loved every word that woman wrote. I’m betting she and Carlin are floating around somewhere out in the ether wondering how this world could get so effed up because they warned us even then.
I miss Molly so much... she made Texas a lot easier to bear. In Austin, 3-4 blocks from the state capitol grounds, there's a restaurant called Scholz Beer Garten that has been in pretty much continuous operation since 1866. It's a big political hangout, esp when the lege is in session, and I've seen pictures and video and film of Molly hanging out there (in some shots, Ann Richards is close by, too). There's a dining room when you walk in, another room behind it, and a patio out back -- before the lege was so overwhelmingly red, one party would stake off the back room and the other got the patio. Good German food and a great beer menu.
For the past few years, I've worked for one of the state agencies (one that actually helps people) close to the Capitol, and now and then I go there for an office party or just lunch, if I have to drive into the office. Didn't discover it until after Molly was gone, but when I'm there, it's so easy to imagine her across the room with drink in hand, laughing her ass off...
I think you are so right! Especially in Texas. I lived in Texas in the 60s, Houston, it was a fantastic place to be then. Now I don't even want to drive through the state headed anywhere else.
