This is how I feel: The Secret Behind Voter Registration Shifts: Decoding Trump's Cryptic Statement

When I first heard Trump’s cryptic statement, “We have a secret, I can't tell you, but you will find out soon,” my initial reaction was a mix of intrigue and skepticism. But the more I thought about it, the more unsettling it became. What could he be hinting at that we “will find out soon”?

As I reflected on it, I realized the key to this mystery might lie in the voter registration changes in battleground states between the 2020 and 2024 elections. Here’s what I found and why it might just reveal what’s behind that “secret.”

Unpacking the Shifts in Battleground States

Over the past four years, voter registrations have seen significant, and in some cases, surprising shifts in states that decide our national elections. Here’s a breakdown:

Arizona:

Republican registrations: Up 100,000

Democratic registrations: Down 50,000

Independent registrations: Up 75,000

Florida:

Republican registrations: Up over 300,000

Democratic registrations: Down around 200,000

Independent registrations: Up 150,000

Georgia:

Republican registrations: Up 150,000

Democratic registrations: Up 100,000

Independent registrations: Up 50,000

Michigan:

Republican registrations: Up 80,000

Democratic registrations: Up 60,000

Independent registrations: Up 40,000

North Carolina:

Republican registrations: Up 76,350

Democratic registrations: Down 50,000

Independent registrations: Up 100,000

Pennsylvania:

Republican registrations: Up 428,537

Democratic registrations: Down 257,281

Independent registrations: Up 50,000

Wisconsin:

Republican registrations: Up 60,000

Democratic registrations: Up 40,000

Independent registrations: Up 30,000

Across these states, Republican voter registrations have grown significantly, while Democratic registrations have fluctuated—some increasing slightly, others sharply declining. Independents are rising across the board, signaling a potential desire for something outside the traditional party lines.

I don't believe this election was won or lost at the ballot box. I have always believed it would be a combination of the gerrymandering that's happened for decades and the more contemporary machinations that have gone on (somewhat) behind the scenes from the Republicans. It didn't matter what the vote was unless it was a landslide, as long as it was close they had set in place machinery to help them.

Don't know actual figures in Texas, but there were many thousands of voters purged from the rolls in 2024 alone by that impeached criminal of an AG -- he went and de-registered another big bunch when he heard about LULAC and the abuelas organizing Hispanic voters (oh, and he sent agents to harass the abuelas, just for fun.) Texas has too many citizens who vote liberal... got to put a stop to that!

Expand full comment
Robin Wohlfeil's avatar

In Texas, voters do not register by party affiliation. Instead, they declare their party preference when participating in primary elections. Therefore, specific data on the party affiliation of new registrants between 2020 and 2024 is not available. However, analyzing primary election participation can offer some insights into party preferences.

For instance, in the March 2024 presidential primary:

Republican Primary: 2,323,019 voters participated.

Democratic Primary: 982,069 voters participated.

These figures suggest a higher engagement in the Republican primary during that election cycle.

(Texas Secretary of State)

While this data provides a glimpse into party preferences, it doesn't directly correlate to the party affiliation of new registrants, as Texas does not collect such information during voter registration.

Expand full comment
un poco loco's avatar

True. However, OAG also has access to all of the data gathered when a citizen applies for a drivers license. There is a lot of demographic data about the citizens of Texas that is held by the state, and all of that is at Paxton's disposal. For example, he clearly knew who he needed to target when he went after LULAC a few months ago.

Personally, I think he could be criminally prosecuted in state and/or federal court for his use of privileged data for political reasons, but I doubt it will happen. He's skated on all of his previous criminal activity.

The Pew Research Center says that Texas voters are split pretty evenly between the two parties -- 39% identify as Republicans and 40% as Democrats.

Expand full comment
Robin Wohlfeil's avatar

True, and it’s concerning when state-held data, especially demographic information from driver's licenses, might be used to single out certain groups. It raises big questions about privacy and ethical governance. Using such data to fuel political agendas crosses a line that blurs public service with personal or partisan aims. Paxton’s unchecked history amplifies the worry that data isn't safeguarded as it should be, especially when it comes to fair representation and equal treatment. Given the almost even split in Texas voter demographics, the stakes of using this data unethically could influence the state's political balance—a troubling thought for democracy and it most likely isn't just happening in TX.

Along with that, and not wanting to sound like loser Trump in 2020, but have to wonder if in the red states with GOP election operatives, could there have been ballot machine tampering? Something really seems off both per the polls, voter registration and election turn-out.

This is definitely part of it, and it is suspicious, suggesting voter purges perhaps. But it doesn't account for 15M fewer voters for Harris than for Biden. The guy who put together the Trump dossier (the one reporting his dealings with Putin that go back years now), Christopher Steele, has written a book detailing everything he found out in his investigation of Trump, Trump's relationship with Putin, and how he obtained that information -- most of it was from sources he knew from his years at MI6 and his time in Russia and other places in Europe. Overall, it confirms what we heard in 2016 -- and Steele has a LOT of receipts. Title is "Unredacted".

US intelligence and various other officials made a point of trashing the guy when he came to the US during his investigation -- that really made me wonder what the hell was going on. Their reaction seems a little extreme if it's just about turf and entitlement, as it usually is...

I am not conceding anything at this point, except that trump got 2m more votes than the last time, and the spread was only 4m apart between him and Kamala. The spread between him and Biden was 10m votes in the other direction. Why isn't the press asking about the 13m people stayed home who voted last time? Why aren't they wondering more how the Iowa poll that has been spot on every calls since Obama but one could be so off that even trump was surprised to win? What about the many stories with loose threads about bomb threats from Russians, starlink manipulation on Putin's behalf, and massive voter suppression all over the country. Yes, where the fuck is Merrick Garland now when we have legitimate questions he should already be asking before handing over the keys? I'm not buying the bullshit narrative the press and the billionaires are shoveling over us like grave dirt. There are 262m adults in the US, 142m people voted, of them 73m, approx the same # give or take a mil voted again for grievance bag. That is NOT half the country, it is not a majority of people or a universal mandate for the P2025 fuckery plan, it's a 3rd of the adults. Kamala got approx a third and there are 120m people who either didn't vote or couldn't vote or their votes were lost and I think we need to be finding out what the 100m people are willing to put up with before we freak out and concede any space mentally to those who would have us fearing each other the day after the election. There was no end to the screeching monkies and recounts last election and somehow Dems are completely like, ok, we're out - without a fuss? Id like to know what else besides the peaceful transition of power is on the table with the SCOTUS decisions? There will likely be blood and suffering but their biggest weapon against us is making us fear what they might do, rather than pushing back on it before it even starts. Being smarter will help a lot. I'm digging my heels in and not going back.

Lucky you. I’m working on moving my “exit plan” forward by a year.

So, I’m thinking to coordinate my exit my full-time residency in the US by late 2025, (if not sooner).

Now that I’m fully cognizant of the misogyny, full-throated and active racism, white supremacy, the many supporters of this system and the ignorance of a number of Americans - I cannot allow myself to exist in the toxic environment that is the (dis)United States.

I’m uncomfortable with what was promised should IQ 45 win the election. I am aware of the plans of Project 2025 via the controllers and coordinators of MAGA and their unhinged figurehead. I expect there to be concentration camps, mass incarcerations, the US becoming a pariah internationally, a devastating economic environment, more homelessness, no human services safety-net, the destruction of the EPA, the Dept of Education, the status of many government departments and employees, etc. The sponsors of MAGA will do everything using full control of all branches of government to deconstruct American society - as directed to by Putin and his conspirators.

I expect that most aspects of US society will deconstruct and become virtually miserable for everyone making less than the equivalent of 300K annually.

Those who have sufficient financial resources, but who do not agree w/MAGA will probably opt to be silent and “wait it out” and/or leave the US.

Those who have family members who are disabled and/or have insufficient financial resources will be/are torn - they have to help themselves and their immediate family first and might not have the resources to help everyone else in their family/grouping of loved ones.

There will be MAGA brownshirts - neighbors tattling on others for perceived “favors”. You will have to be mindful of what you say and to whom. Trump has acknowledged that he is vengeful and holds grudges - no matter if someone has financial resources or not. He will attempt to follow Putin’s example and imprison his detractors AND steal their assets.

His followers will continue to listen to his dog whistles and follow his directives.

This is the future that US residents are looking at. Trump may opt not to leave office, as he has claimed.

Currently-there is a MAGA majority composing the Supreme Court-able to rubber stamp any corrupt decision that is made. There are dark times ahead.

I wish that what I am saying was hyperbole, but it’s not.

He has repeatedly claims that admires Hitler, Nazi Germany and all of the evil that arose during those dark times. He plans to reproduce all of that and more in the US. Many of his followers are unquestioning cult members-they will happily do his and MAGA’s bidding.

This is real and coming the moment that he assumes office in January of 2025.

He said that he would be a dictator on day one and though he is a consistent liar, I believe him.

I am saddened, but on high alert - because I’ve watched them, am a student of history and

MAGA is now bragging that "Project 2025 IS the agenda!" Well, ok, then, how y'all gonna feel when one of the measures (and a "sooner rather than later") which ends subsidized housing for the elderly and disabled goes into effect, and both mama AND granny move in? OOPSIES!

The other thing that amuses me in some tiny way is the fact that never in history has there been an authoritarian government who would tolerate an armed populace, no matter what their political leanings might be. Authoritarians keep their power by getting rid of problems BEFORE they happen, and one of the biggest possible problems is, "Gee, what if they all get mad at me, with all those guns???"

I’m same. We watch Larry O’Donnell and/or pbs when they have a good line up. But going sour on just about everything. Husband is a terrific speed reader with high retention “scores” so he scopes out lots, and pushes the reasonable pieces at me. But the reality is that most of our “news” is entertainment. Our “usually more honest, but still weak and pandering” blue media is failing left and right, if you ask me. (Pun intended.)

Jeff, you’d have to fall off some deep cliff for me to discontinue this new habit I have of waiting eagerly to hear your take on the world. I’ve got to turn off my mothering switches because I keep wanting to say “take a day off now and then”. “Burned out“ is a real thing. I’ve been there. Though that could just be his firing half the people that work there. But... it seems awful funny that I can almost NEVER get a post through. How does anyone else post there? Regardless, I never understood Twitter, and I just don't like anything about the platform, so I never use it and have no iuntention to. I think I'll delete my account today. Right now, in fact.

What I want to know is who stepped on the fucking butterfly?

The worst part is that Trump isn't the real problem. We just handed the government to the Christian Nationalists and even if Trump keels over tomorrow; Vance, Johnson, etc. are still going to enact their agenda. At this point we need to hope we'll still have legitimate elections in two years. Meanwhile, all the morons who voted for Trump 'because of the economy' are going to find out just how badly they screwed themselves and everyone else.

The stupidest part of this is that it never occurs to any of them that if Trump is right and all those tariffs are going to be paid by other countries then there is nothing stopping them from hitting us with tariffs that we would have to pay.,

As it is, tariffs do hurt the country they are aimed at and there will be retaliation. This means that once it becomes obvious that Trump's tariffs are hurting the country, it won't be easy to go back to the normal status quo.

THIS. I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist but how the fuck did she get 15 million fewer votes than Biden after all the rallies, the $1 billion in contributions, the long lines at polling places, the momentum and energy? It's suspect. Why did they cave so early instead of investigating?
