It's a KKK state. One of my Mexican-American family members was refused service at a public golf club and at a barbershop. He's was visiting his in-laws. They live in San Diego, thank goodness. Indiana could use an enema.

When I was a teen, living in a small town in W. Pa, there was a public pool, which was 'restricted' to white people only. I had a friend, Jewish like me, who got very dark when she tanned in the summers. We all went down to the pool and she got kicked out because she was mistaken for a Black person. So, we all left in solidarity.

Later on, there were 2 country clubs. One, for Jews, the other one for not Jews. My Dad, who played golf like it was a religion, joined the Jewish one and we all went for the pool. One day, the manager, in a fit of anti-semitic pique, torched the clubhouse.

As the years passed and the town shrank, the remaining club opened its doors, because they needed members to keep going. Dad joined, because golf. My HS had a reunion there and I went, just to see if the walls would crumble when I walked in. I was sorely disappointed.

Kansas is a small electoral college state, but it may be a bellwether this election. Kansas has two senators, Roger Marshall, Trumper MAGA Sellout and Jerry Moran, Traditional Republican. Last week Senator Moran presented Baker University in Baldwin City, KS with a bible signed by President Biden. This contribution was for the University's presidential bible collection.

Senator Moran has not endorsed VP Harris, however this respectful, rational, reasonable, non-partisan act by Senator Moran indicates that Kansas ain't all insane MAGA red.

"Baker University

Senator Moran visited Baker University yesterday to personally deliver a Bible signed by President Biden. This Bible will join the Presidential Bibles on display at the Quayle Bible Collection through Inauguration Day!

I spent the day helping friends get in their wood. Our friends are Dems but are feeling gloomy about Vice President Harris' chances of winning. I gave them my best pep talk, but I was still on the somber side when we got home.

Then I made the mistake of reading another Substack writer's comment section and it plunged me into gloom. Not one of those commenters was positive about Kamala Harris' chances to win and they were all "gotta get my passport renewed..." Gotta check out SwissAir schedules..." Gotta check out what the citizenship requirements are for Canada." Geez, apparently Chicken Little LIVES....in every single hand-wringing, pearl-clutching, running-around-like-hair-is-on-fire Democrat.

Well, I do think worrying about what airline to flee on before the election is held seems to be a bit premature. However, what I really object to is spreading gloom and despair prior to the election. Why? What good does it do? I understand feeling anxious about what's at stake with this election but we have two more weeks to go! We need to spread confidence and pride. Doom and gloom could--possibly--discourage people from voting thinking it of no use...that their vote won't count and we need EVERYBODY TO VOTE!!! When we turn out--and vote--we win!!!

1)there are more newly registered voters than ever before. - 13 Million, the majority will vote for Harris

2) women are pissed off about the overturning of Roe and they will show up in droves to vote for Harris.

3) we have a coalition that includes lots of conservative republicans. They have as no one to vote for because they love the constitution and with Cheney’s support and the support of many conservative republicans we will capture that vote.

4) Trump’s rhetoric has gotten more violent and he is obviously mentally melting down.

5)Harris has a great ground game and Trump not much of one.

6) Harris has separated her policies from Biden.

7) To summarize the women and GenZ’s will have Harris win by a landslide.

Sure hope so. The maniac's rapidly deteriorating rhetoric is coming back to bite him in his fat ass and some GOP voters are finally starting to see through all of his bullshit. Our local news showed a clip this morning of the MAGA moron king saying he wants God to come down for one day to count the votes in CA. WTF? He obviously doesn't realize how bad he will get his ass handed to him here and hopefully as convincingly in many other states as well.

I agree 100%! Rep. Maxwell Frost has been campaigning on college campuses, and the voter registrations are up something like 700%. Since these people never voted before, they aren’t included in polling

Also, a majority of the polls recently have been financed by the GOP, and they trend red, so they are causing the totals to look more red than they actually are.

Don’t despair, we’ve got this. Just don’t let up on the work. It’s pedal to the metal until November 5!

I write this in tribute to my late mother who was involved with politics since the late 1950s and staunch member of the League of Women voters. Right until near the end of her time, she also volunteered as an poll worker for every. single. election. Every state primary, every national election. She loved going to hear speeches by politicians of any stripe talk about their views. She would come home and spend QUITE a bit of time discussing and breaking down the politician's stance.

She once told me she was interested in going to hear Jill Stein, never having heard much about her. When she returned, I asked my mother what she thought. I was expecting a long discussion of some finer points.

For the first time ever, my mother simply said, "Jill Stein is an idiot."

Your columns invariably make me laugh, often out loud -- and sometimes even FOTFLMAO. However, after early voting yesterday here in Charleston, SC, I came home and wrote the following. I feel no humor within. (Didn't even read your column today. Sorry about that.)

"Tonight, I find myself thinking of our national anthem. The words, 'Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free?' play over and over and over in my mind. And I realize that for the first time in my life, I understand the tremendous anxiety behind that question: DOES it still wave? Or have we lost the battle? And that is where I am. WILL our nation still exist as a democracy in two weeks and one day? or will we become a fascist dictatorship? The fact that a severely demented man who is a malignant narcissist, who is owned by a group of oligarchs and fascists, is supported by 50%!!! of my fellow American citizens is shocking. It is beyond anything I could ever have imagined. It's breaking me. Today I voted. I also spoke with some perfectly nice people who have bought hook, line, and sinker into the lies told incessantly by the orange sadist, and say that they are "really scared" of Kamala Harris. They know NOTHING. And these are the people who are deciding the fate of the United States. So I sit here, feeling overwhelming anxiety deep in the pit of my stomach, wondering: WILL that flag yet wave? Or will it soon be over?"

Expand full comment
Morgan's avatar

KD I’m right there with you.. but WE the PEOPLE will pick up our BELOVED FLAG and we will wave it because WE THE PEOPLE CAN DO THIS!! WE WILL NEVER SURRENDER OUR Country or OUR PEOPLE to The DICTATORSHIP of DRUMF and His CORRUPT COMMUNIST Buddies!! UNITED WE STAND 🙌🏽💙🙌🏽

This is the double-edged nature of self governance. The right, duty, privilege, and responsibility of choosing our leaders is the most solemn, serious, and important decision for our way of life. Being well informed, clear-eyed, and cognizant of our dedication to fact and the rule of law are essential for wise choices. Being gullible, ignorant, resentful, angry, violent, and emotionally manipulated are detrimental to our process of choosing. We get what we deserve.

We have become so anti-tax and anti-regulation as a knee jerk reaction and yet want all the facilities and services and whine when they aren't there. How, pray tell, is everything paid for without taxes? Is free market capitalism workable without any regulations? Should we be ruled by an oligarchy consisting of only the wealthiest (and greediest)?

Educated people all over are early voting for Democrats. Arkansas started at 8 am yesterday and I was there before that. I got to talk to women in their 80s. We did not discuss who they were going to vote for, but I feel that their votes were for Democrats.

I expect Arkansas to stay Red but with a surprising amount of Blue, when all the votes are counted.

Some of the non college educated people are increasingly turned off by Trump's garbage. The Democrat TV ads show regular folks who aren't rich and who want government that works for them. If the people elect the government, shouldn't the government work for the people?

I look forward to a landslide for the Democrats, with little recourse for MAGA. If they want to revolt, Joe Biden can put them down and lock up the boss "man".

So I am not afraid. I want to celebrate my 73rd birthday in peace on November 5th.

And I'll add a feel-good story I saw on the old TT this morning. A couple in Missouri put an Apple tracker on one of their Harris/Walz lawn signs. They tracked it to the trunk of a car belonging to two teenage boys and their Karen--I mean, mom. In the trunk were 60 Harris lawn signs. Karen, seeing her boys were caught (with police on they way) got mad and grabbed the signs from the truck and threw them on the ground shouting, "Oh, you liberals! I just can't take it anymore!"

Can't take having someone's stolen property returned to them? At $20 a piece x 60 signs = felony. FOAFO, trumpies.
