The gerrymander fight is on. There is a new playbook. The old rules have been struck down by the Supreme Court. We need to change the gears here as fast as possible for deadly preemptive strikes. Newsom has moved out on this already. Who is next? Hochul, where are you? Pritzker, what are you doing? Will you promote this new move?

And tear off their combat medals while they’re at it!!

I was 12 years old in 1971, and have never forgotten this incredible act of defiance:

“On April 23, 1971, Vietnam Veterans Against the War staged one of the most dramatic and influential events of the antiwar movement as hundreds of Vietnam veterans, dressed in combat fatigues and well-worn uniforms, stepped up and angrily, one after another for three straight hours, hurled their military medals, ribbons, discharge papers, and even a cane onto the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Many of them paused to speak. There has never been an antiwar or anti-government protest anything like this in the U.S., before or since.” (Wikipedia)

My family saw the protest on the nightly news with Walter Cronkite. I was just a kid, but the veterans’ phenomenonal act of courageous resistance has stayed with me for 54 years. I honor them still!

Nicky, getting arrested is not going to end the conversation anymore, it'll start it.

A LOT of people are going to be getting arrested for yelling disrespectful things to authority figures strutting around in Hitler drag. Things like "sorry about your penis!" or "does your mother know you left the basement, loser?". Not to mention all of the attacks with a deli weapon. It'll be a bloodbath, I tell you.

The NG occupation forces have now been ordered to be armed (this from our impaired SecDef). This will go quite swimming. Amazingly enough, a few of us Libs know a couple of things about firearms ( https://theliberalgunclub.com/ ). We will be engaging those Weekend Rambos in some scintillating conversations about whether their weapons are loaded, whether they're pre-chambered, and how many civilians they plan to slaughter today. I personally want to know what explosive weapons they've been issued since a hand grenade would be able to effectively kill and maim large numbers of us. The toadies will be getting some feedback on their stance, trigger-finger positioning, and how their gear appears to be configured.

They will soon pass laws, and probably Executive Orders, criminalizing talking to the zoo animals. We will then be reduced to pointing and laughing. Or maybe just go to jail. Fuck it.

We need to flood the zone and it’s become more obvious as each day passes. Newsom, Walz, Pritzker, Sanders and everyone else needs to keep up these barn burning speeches and find consistent methods of yanking the attention away from the gaslighting a-hole MAGAts and the propganda machine.

Expand full comment
MzNicky in East Jesus, TN's avatar

Just don’t count on MSM to be part of the zone, as Jeff points out.

Expand full comment
Walt Svirsky's avatar

There is no MSM. The so called MSM is all oligarch owned and creates disinformation because that is their job now. Any truth that seeps out is the exception, not the rule.

Ladies and gentlemen, WE are the mainstream media now. Let’s take our responsibility seriously.

Expand full comment
MzNicky in East Jesus, TN's avatar

Yes, they’re all corporately owned, bought and paid for. But NBC, CBS, CNN, Fox, NYT, WaPo, etc. are still the media with the largest megaphones for most people who follow the news. We’re not the media, mainstream or otherwise; we don’t track down and write up the news. We’re news consumers, like everybody else.

Expand full comment
Walt Svirsky's avatar

But they just can’t be the megaphone for most people. That’s my point. The disinformation and outright lying by FAUX News and now all oligarch owned media is what got us into this mess. We need to recognize the oligarch owned media for what it is - PROPAGANDA.

The truth is out there and you don’t need a TV to see it. I feel I’m well informed, but I wouldn’t watch Good Morning America at the point of a gun.

Expand full comment
MzNicky in East Jesus, TN's avatar

You and I and many others know that, but we’re political-news junkies. We pay close attention; most people don’t. I haven’t watched TV news in years, but when I research a topic on Google, unless I’m doing a deep dive for primary sources, the search will initially turn up pages and pages of MSM reporting, with maybe a few obviously slanted takes from more esoteric sources on the topic. So, I’m still receiving the news from CNN, MSNBC, Fox, and the NYT.

The fact remains that most people (especially the oldsters) get their news from broadcast or cable media, not from independent online sources. Youngsters use primarily online news, mostly from FB, X, YouTube, and TikTok. But via whichever medium they choose, the sources for the news most people consume still originate in mainstream/legacy reporting.

Expand full comment
Walt Svirsky's avatar

I agree that is where most Americans get their tainted news. Many don’t realize they are being manipulated by what is being presented as fact.

Allowing the fascist oligarchs to buy up all of the MSM was a critical mistake. Where were the democracy loving billionaires when this was happening? Why is no one making an effort now to host a truthful, non-propaganda network that is NOT owned by a fascist? There’s a dozen pure propaganda networks hosted by Heritage Foundation loving MAGATS. We have zero…and please don’t mention MSNBC.

Expand full comment
George in Atlanta's avatar

It looks to me like it's simpler than that. There used to be 3 networks plus the Big (very literal) Press for Authoritative News. The high cost of entry gave it credibility and motivated protection of the high levels of investment. MSM was an artifact of economics and is now gone. Being the 'voice for the people' was merely a temporary side effect, one noted even by the Founders as messy and unreliable. They gave it protections, held their breath, and hoped for the best.

Today, what used to be news corps are unloading news operations ASAP. They want and are setting up Big Entertainment. That's where the profits are as well as the plausible deniability protection from politics (as much as is possible). News is banished to the hinterlands. Tens of thousands of channels and outlets from organized groups to hit-and-run pirates are ALL there is*. The news space actually looks more like colonial America than the 20th Century did. Credible editorial power is now more valuable than it's ever been. How many of us have Snopes and Ground News on speed-dial? The remaining physical press, like NYT and WSJ, are feeling *crushing* levels of pressure to not knuckle under to the regime. That is growing, fast.

(* There are outliers, of course. The AP told Trump to fuck right off about the Gulf of Mexico. Their credibility held as a result.)

Happy but where's Whitmer? Shapiro? Where's Buttigieg? Where's Mark Kelly?

Instead of trying to lie low in case they make the cut for 2028, every coherent, progressive Dem needs to be out there DAILY making some sort of news. Shock and awe back at the White House.

I also think the governors need to form a "coalition of the willing" and start taking over areas sabotaged by the trump admin.

For example, a task force on pollution - have boilerplate laws written, or orders or whatever, that states can quickly adopt to counteract the dismantling of the EPA.

health - a task for figuring out how to support vaccinations at the state level. Or even maybe how to do state-level ACAs like Massachusetts did "Romneycare."

redistricting - obviously

sanctuary and legal representation of asylum seekers, foreign students, etc. --

candidates - task forces on how to put a Dem candidate on deck for every office coming up in 2026. No uncontested.

The list goes on but if they pool resources instead of every state going off willy nilly, and show united force against the evil regime, maybe something could get done.
