sorry to post so late. this one was another bear to write. COULD THE TORRENT OF NEWS PLEASE SLOW DOWN AND LET ME CATCH MY BREATH?

Suki Herr's avatar

It’s no longer just Trump the world blames for his cruel idiotic incompetence.

Those at Davos blame American voters.

I have never once voted for Trump. I’ve never watched the “Apprentice”.

In the future people who deny voting for Trump. For many that will be a lie. Then there’s the ridiculous group of Democrats who think not voting is a worthwhile protest, it’s lazy&stupid

nancy's avatar

Yes, remember when 90% of Americans supported the war in Iraq?

Well, you could co😊

unt them on one hand now.

AND---I was an adult during the Vietnam War. I lived in a conservative state at the time, and, believe

me, most of the people you

knew or met were cheerleaders for that war. Going back to that state now, no one admits it.

Suki Herr's avatar

I write about this occasionally: In the Erica Jong book “Fear of Flying” she spoke about a time when her then husband was stationed in Germany. Ms Jong worked for a small local paper. She was trying to locate a Nazi era amphitheater. No one would admit to knowing its existence or whereabouts.

There will always be maga in the walls&carpets, but many Americans will deny supporting Trump.

Claudia Montague Wheatley's avatar

That's a good story. She finds the amphitheater and writes a self-righteous OpEd about Truth and Art and Beauty for a local paper. The editor agrees to print it, but tells her she doesn't understand the German people.

"The Germans LOVED Hitler," he said. "If they were to be honest, you wouldn't like what you would hear. But they are not honest. For 25 years they have not been honest. They never cried for their war dead and they never cried for Hitler. ... Even they don't know their real feelings. If they were honest, you would hate it worse than their hypocrisy."

I'll go out on a limb and speculate that MAGA loves Trump for the same reason Germans loved Hitler: Both men appeared at a time when a segment of their countries's population felt beaten-down and losing ground, and for a few glorious years, they made them feel like the winners of life's lottery.

And then, when it's over, MAGA will pack away the Trump flags and other memorabilia, just like the Germans packed away their Nazi merch, and soothe their broken hearts with drugs, alcohol and the most powerful substance of all: Denial.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

They already do the latter now, he gave them a momentary high, which even they know was fleeting.

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

AND - gathering from some of what I've heard from extended family members who were all in for him then, despite acknowledging just how stupid he was and is, they voted for him anyway because 'he told it like it was'...'spoke his mind', 'spoke our language', etc. To me it's that THEY finally found someone dumber and far more stupid than them, which made them finally feel more superior to but just as racist and misogynistic as themselves. Why would they want a stupid leader is the question? I've always preferred a President who's FAR more intelligent than myself. When every cat and dog I've ever raised is smarter than the orange fool ripping apart OUR White House, you know a huge wrong turn was made. They will happily go back underground with their racist bigotry - until their next opportunity comes along. I don't blame ANYONE for thinking the American 'voter' is at fault - but it is a bit galling when so many of us never have, never did and never would vote for this 'stupido' and are doing everything possible to fight back.

DuduLovesBubu's avatar

MAGA in the carpets? That sounds so much like dog shit one tracks in stuck to the bottom of one's shoe.

George in Atlanta's avatar

Yeah, I always loved me some Germans. They have a special word for people who supported Hitler but only did it for the sake of their families. They're called Nazis.

Back in the 80's, I got into a conversation with a nice young German couple. They were complaining bitterly about how Americans were stomping around in their Black Forest with NATO on maneuvers. I just observed that they are a sovereign nation, the Bundestag could toss the American army out of Germany if it chose. Their reply wasn't legal or procedural, it had nothing to do with the NATO alliance being binding. It was just pure, visceral horror at the very idea. The man blurted out, in a near panic "No! We cannot! You are here protecting us from ourselves!".

Now, that's fucked up.

Patris's avatar

Realistic though

Lynn Horsky's avatar

I won't let my 3 Trumpian brothers off the hook and go revisionist history on me! My Uncle, who was born in the early 20's told me he saw the KKK meeting in Arlington VA at an old stadium, which is the site of a mall now, when he was a little kid. He snuck in with a few neighborhood kids and saw them burning crosses with their hoods on and all. After a big march on DC in mid-late 20's, the populace woke up and banned the secrecy of members in the group, whose headquarters was in Arlington VA. (Similarly, we should ban dark money in politics today AND the MASKING of ICE.) The KKK now had to publish the names of those people in the organization which essentially forced it too disband as the hypocritical members were local racist businessmen and politicians who could then be held accountable for the lynchings and burnings. The headquarters left the state of Virginia then.

AuntTeeFa's avatar

They probably moved to Palm Beach Florida

Elizabeth Schulz's avatar

THIS! I will not let any die-hard trumpian magats off the hook, especially through the horrors we've witnessed (and the arguments I've had with those I'm still dealing with here). This one neighbour is STILL determined to prove that he's been 'good for the US' and that she is 'right' about this 'good christian who's repented' as she sees him (or claims she does., We've had blow-outs but it's a small cul-de-sac, we've been very good to her (and her now-deceased parents) over the years - hubby still doesn't want to end our relationship with her (he was in the hospital during the first couple of episodes so wasn't aware)...and so puts me in an awkward position. He paid HIS dues in Combat so I can't fight him on this but it is most frustrating when he leaves it to me to 'handle' things with her - and she just shows up at our door. Augh. His kind of racism (frump's) for me cannot be glossed-over or forgiven.

I never for one minute believed the "Intel" on why we went in or supported it. Lo and behold, those of us who did not support it turned out to be right. We were lied to and lots of people died for that, and marriages broke up and children grew up without one or both parents. Devastating lies.

Lynn Horsky's avatar

I'll never forget going into Sears for some appliance and taking the escalator down to a yellow ribboned area with Matell plastic Soldiers and Kids Camo War paraphenalia for sale. Denise Donaldson's avatar

Same here, Linda. The rationale for invading was ridiculous on the face of it, and I didn't understand why the whole country---especially Congress---didn't see that.

Mary Busch's avatar

The Republican Congress knew it was a lie. They went along with it so Bush could be re-elected for a second term.

Linda Weide's avatar

Lots of people from many countries died in fighting along with our soldiers to defend that lie. It is sickening.

Molly Blue Dawn's avatar

Linda Weide's avatar

Not all. No one I knew believed it. And, I might point out that our allied countries that Trump has now dissed and threatened also gave their sons to the cause, many of whom lost their lives or shed blood to support the lie of an unpopular US president to up his poll ratings.

john augustine's avatar

Had to be a lot to get 90% approval for Iraq war. As once famously said patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel

NEAL O'CONNOR's avatar

They even lied to their Secretary of State (Powell) before he made his/our case at the UN!

Joe Witkowski's avatar

Powell was a fucking liar too. Don’t fool yourself.

Eileen's avatar

Powell should have resigned on the spot. We know he knew invading Iraq was going to be a cluster because leading up to it he warned the famous Potterybarn rule: "You break it, you own it."

It's time for us to think about another rule. When Russia was losing, Ukraine was ready to take advantage of their dismal performance and with our help, could have crushed Russia - set them way back. But no, Speaker Mike Johnson slow-walked the funding of munitions and completely gave Russia time to regroup to fight another day.

Same for us during this war with our illegal government. ICE is obviously a lawbreaking nightmare. We need to double down on national, persistent protests to show that we will not tolerate this new normal gestapo.

Unfortunately, 7 Democrats voted to fund ICE. So, call your senators and tell them NO! Tell them to retire Senator Schumer and stop being complete idiots by giving away our leverage. When we are winning the war, it's time to finish them off.

New rule: "We are mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore!"

Then count me in the other 10% of those that didn't support the Iraq War. If you think about it, every full on elective war the US has been involved in has been a total shit show. Vietnam springs to mind, Afghanistan another, and also started by the same administration, the Iraq War. And I knew it was total bullshit when Dubya & Cheney complained that Saddam wasn't allowing the UN inspectors full access, when the UN didn't say a word about denial of access. Dick Cheney was in a fucking hurry to get his little war of Colonialism going. I did not/could not predict the full on shit show & murder of 1M Iraqis, nor the complete breakdown of the Iraq's government, but there's a line from the movie Body Heat. "For any crime, there's a 100 ways it can go wrong, and if you can think of 50 of them, you're a genius." Same holds true for any military invasion, with enough firepower you can destroy the smaller country's military. But unless you're embraced as a liberator and invited (and Dubya was NOT invited to that party) your military intervention will turn into a fucking hell hole.

Rosemary Orlandi's avatar

ditto ! my son served during Desert Storm ; Bush Sr had the grace to stop at the border, so to speak.

Linda Weide's avatar

Not just those at DAVOS. I am living in Germany and a friend who is American was at a restaurant last week talking with a friend, and person at a nearby introduced himself and asked if they were from the US. Then he told them that he had been there in Wisconsin and had a wonderful time, but he wanted to warn them that everyone hates Americans now, not him, but people in general, and that he was warning them not to be so obvious about being American in public. I think he meant don't speak in English. It made me think of how immigrants are feeling in the US right now. Boycotts against US goods are being organized and I think that wave will grow.

Also, as for Canada. I read that Trump said he wanted Alberta. Alberta is filled with Maple MAGAs as Dean Blundell call them, and some want to join the US. I would be glad to trade my state Illinois for Alberta, since we would love the Canadian health care system and to allow our universities to be funded for research again and our children to get vaccines, etc...

Not only Democrats.. And as to all Americans being blamed: Welcome to being on the other side of collective guilt. How does it feel? Perhaps Americans can learn something from this, like the dangers of generalization. We might start by applying it to the Palestinians, Muslims and Jews.

Robert Eckert's avatar

Collective attribution of guilt may be wrongful, but collective punishment is simply unavoidable. Not every German supported Hitler but all of Germany suffered for it. America as a whole is going to be seriously diminished and all of us will feel it.

Pam Humphrey's avatar

It feels like shit…and deserved.

Frank Nuts's avatar

Hi Stephen. I apologize that I don’t understand what you’re saying. You say “we might start by applying it to the Palestinians…”. Applying what?

Two versions: We reject the notion of collective guilt; We recognize that all people are individuals, so that, for instance, there's no causal connection between appearance and intelligence.

I am sad about that, tending toward "irate." Like the eight senators who called off the government shutdown and got nothing in return.

I think that was different. Trump refused to release SNAP funds and there were literally people going hungry. I think these senators took pity on the poor. I have a friend who is a social worker and she said the food banks were over run.

Never watched his game show. Not once. I do believe thats why a lot of people voted for him, though. Television is a great marketing tool.

Ole Anderson's avatar

I grew red in the face trying to explain to Puerto Ricans why a vote for trump was not in their best interests. Blank stare.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

"Not voting is vote for the opposition."

How does that work, mathematically? I don't see it.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Because the republican voting elders, always vote religiously for anything with a pulse, that has an "R" next to their name. In Reno, they once voted for a dead Pimp. Democratic voters, and it is a dichotomy because of our political system, is a much more loosely attached contingency, they aren't as loyal, in fact, at the least excuse some people vote D only when they realize how useless their reps are. (then expect the newly elected D to fix everything with a magic wand on day one, despite not voting enough of them in to actually fix things.) There are roughly a third of voters who are committed racists and then a little less than a third are Independents who vary greatly in their make-up. Some are embarrassed republicans, others refuse to commit to a party. These are the squishy middle that if they don't vote it comes down to the R's winning because they always vote their con-person. The D's can be very fickle and decide not to vote when unhappy, which is a trick that never works because of our system. I have argued with naive foreigners who think "protest votes" send a message, which no one knows why you vote, so, it counts as a vote for someone you didn't really want. Stupid really.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

I agree with your analysis of how things break down, of course.

But my question was, strictly by the numbers, how does a not-vote translate to an R vote? Maybe the person who didn't vote would have voted R. Maybe that person's failure to vote benefitted the Dem. Maybe not as likely, but certainly possible.

Not to make this a huge thing, but I personally think the whole "not voting = voting R" mantra is a myth.

Here's my reasoning:

For the sake of argument, say there are 100 total votes cast. Therefore, each candidate theoretically has a chance to get 100 votes. When all is said and done, whoever gets 51 votes wins.

But suppose only 90 people out of 100 cast votes. So each candidate is fighting to get 46 votes. The other 10 votes aren't in contention.

The pie is the pie. It doesn't matter how big it is; the candidate who gets the majority of votes wins. Any non-voters don't affect the outcome.

Anybody think this logic is flawed? Please do point out any errors.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Republican voters nearly always vote because they are ideological voters, especially the elderly, as they are the largest voting demographic. Third party votes siphon away from the candidates who could actually win, that is how that part works. Non-voters should be aware of the responsibility to not use your voice when it is needed to ward off an authoritarian, is pretty fucking negligent. When Republican voters vote in lock-step as they do, we need a large number of votes to off-set them and limit the damage they can do. When we don’t vote, it allows those numbers to win even, if it isn’t a majority abstaining over purity policies, because no one in politics can ever be pure enough, it gives the election to those who show up to vote.

Robert Eckert's avatar

"Maybe the person who didn't vote would have voted R" No, the people who would vote R show up solidly, even for candidates they don't totally agree with, because they understand that politics is about exerting power, not a performance art about self-expression. If Republicans were like Democrats they would have not voted for Reagan's second term because he didn't abolish abortion in his first year.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Remember in Orwell's "1984," WAR IS PEACE. So the Board of Peace is really the Board or War. I am wondering whether that means that the countries that paid to be on this board are either going to expect Trump won't use his powerful military to make war on their countries; or that they will have to join him when he uses his powerful army to make war on other countries, like countries that did not ante up to join his board. Greenland is in trouble because Denmark did not join his board. Trump must be getting frustrated, he has given European countries endless opportunities to pay him grift, and he is trying again and again. Will it work, or will they eschew it altogether?

I stand with Minnesota in their GENERAL STRIKE DAY, even though I am living abroad. My friend in Chicago told me that the actual temp was -34 and that with windchill could go down to -50 in Chicago and Wisconsin. She showed me a weather map that showed that Nuuk is warmer than Chicago and Wisconsin, so I am hoping that Minnesota is really cold too, and that ICE agents are not out.

michellefromchicago's avatar

Chicagoan here -- current temp in our far north neighborhood is -2, but wind chill is -12. In Milwaukee, it's -9, but feels like -31. The Wisconsonites will have no trouble coping with these temps, but ICE may very well find themselves frozen out.

Linda Weide's avatar

Michelle, I hope you are keeping cosy and warm. I was saying to my friend in Chicago about Minnesota that I hoped it was too cold for ICE to go out. My daughter's boyfriend is in Texas and driving to a friend in Austin who has a fireplace, in case the energy grid fails them again. No one in Texas trusts their governor when he says things are fine now. At least, no one with any sense.

THEY will not win. IF you need writing help - Adam Mockler or others from the Meidas Touch I'm sure could lend a hand for a day or so until you can catch your breath. YOU need to stay safe, well-rested and the strain of all of this can get exhausting. I'M so exhausted by so much going on I misspelled PM Carney's name and I admire him SO MUCH right now. So PLEASE don't listen to anyone having the temerity to call you 'unhinged' or 'having tds' That's as nutty as anything I've ever read. PS: A wee bit to hopefully cheer you up:: I don't have the video handy (except on instagram) but TizzyEnt (Michael McWhorter) showed the full reel of this woman who's I guess a protester? She has bumper stickers on her car which drives one of 'them' crazy...so he flips her off every time he sees her (I think they live near each other). THIS time when she saw his pick-up truck coming towards her she stopped and began filming him, so AS he passed her and gave her the usual finger with his window open THEN smacked into the rear fender of the SINGLE parked car across the street, knocking HIS wheel off amid a ton of noise, it was downright hilarious to see FAFO in live action. To her credit SHE didn't burst out laughing. HE began screaming: 'goddamnit' and 'I hate you' as he got out of his pick up while she continued to film him (a skinny long-haired white dude). She then calls over calmly: 'are you ok'? He screams back NO!!!! She tries again: 'Are you hurt' He screams: 'YES' - all while he's stomping around looking at any damage to his precious ve-hi-cle. One of the cheerier moments of my morning, showing the huge difference between them and us normal humans. :) Have a nice cuppa tea or coffee, hot chocolate - or whatever warms you, and enjoy the comments. It's going to SNOW in NY tomorrow - a ton more than we usually get, so we're battening down the hatches to get the animals ready and now I have to see 'that' horrid video. :'(

Jack Smith isn’t theatrical. That’s what terrifies them.

No vibes. No loyalty tests. Just evidence, timelines, and consequences.

Authoritarians rely on noise and exhaustion. Prosecutors rely on memory. And memory is what they’re trying to erase.

Norma's avatar

I was really impressed by Jack Smith. It’s absolute fucking bullshit that he didn’t get to prosecute HIM. Shame on all of the traitors to this country for not following the law and putting us through the nightmare that is trump!

P123Sunny's avatar

( Basically: M I T C H )

Eileen's avatar

Justice Roberts and his bought and paid for SCOTUS are responsible. They have the fanciest degrees, the best education and they nonetheless tossed their intelligence aside for greedy gain. Scumbag traitors, all of them.

P123Sunny's avatar

All in the same club…

Eileen's avatar

The thing I don't get is Trump is NOT a member of the old guard "club." He's a scary mutation of their power hungry antics. A slithering green slime that escaped from the laboratory. He disgusts them. Sometimes I wonder what Kompromat Donny has on them via Putin and Epstein.

P123Sunny's avatar

He was weirdly able to cobble together a coalition (and activate a cohort disenfranchised ppl who didn’t normally vote). And his entertainment quality distracts from no poilcies… but 🦊 news and Mark Burnett(The Apprentice-Effect) were major contributors to this PR debacle!

Deborah Hunter's avatar

Sorry, I have no big issues with Biden, but it is on him that we got Merrick Garland. Smith can hold his own with anyone, especially the moronic MAGA trolls.

P123Sunny's avatar

I had heard back then that he had originally wanted Doug Jones… but was talked into Garland (through Ron Klain CoS?) Will have to dig a bit more…

Deborah Hunter's avatar

The damage is already done. Doug Jones would have been much better. I think Garland got picked out of sympathy since McConnell screwed him over.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Yes, and Obama only picked him as a compromise candidate, because in his previous position, he got 100% approval from them, he was not Obama's first choice.

Keith's avatar

JACK SMITH is today's GENERAL COLIN POWELL!

US Blues's avatar

Seriously? Powell lied about WMD.

Keith's avatar

he did lie with the report supplied by the CIA under the code CURVEBALL and the W himself.

he was given FALSE INFORMATION to keep the secret and kick him under the bus

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Shame on him for not independently vetting the info he was given. IIRC, he initially had doubts, but allowed himself to be maneuvered into backing Dubya. In his position, he obviously could have tapped his own sources.

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

I had Republican acquaintances that did NOT go with W just because of his weak case and nobody wanted it, one of the original stupidest wars.

Ingrid Robertshaw's avatar

I hope that Jack Smith sees this thing through with us. I hope all of it is properly memorialized and safely stored away!! The DOJ is at this point nothing else but a hollowed out Agency. Agents who had been part of the case vs. TRUMP , are being purged right & left.

Charles Austin's avatar

Those who were purged need to step up against the criminal organization that DOJ has become.

Yes. I sure hope those that felt adulting is too boring have had enough childish games. "Messaging" alone isn't enough, it has to have solid work behind it. Jack Smith's testimony seems solid. Robert Eckert's avatar

1/16 of a scruple (there are 3 scruples in a dram, and 8 drams in an apothecary's ounce, which is not the same as an ounce avoirdupois or a troy ounce or a fluid ounce although they are all close to 30 grams), originating by cutting the old dose of 1/4 scruple by a factor of 4.

What I don't see on the list of signatories to the obvious cash grab joke "Board of Peace" is any nations who USED TO BE our allies.

Jayme Wolworth's avatar

11 of the countries on the BORED OF PEACE are currently banned from immigrant visas to the US. I say Bored of Peace because it seems like they are getting ready to take over the world. All the violent despots on Earth. What could go wrong?

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

These are ragged assed countries with large impoverished populations, plus two war-strapped criminal nations guilty of genocide (Russia and Israel). Truly the A-list of losers.

Jayme Wolworth's avatar

And Jared Kushner's Power Point presentation on GAZA was disturbing to say the least. They will build their empire on the ashes? There are no words.

arne link's avatar

Netanyahu may be guilty of war crimes but NOT genocide. The only ones committing genocide was Hamas. Attacking Jews with Nazi analogies has more to do with antisemitic hate than reality.

Unless it's directed at Stephen Miller.

rlritt's avatar

I agree 100%.

rlritt's avatar

He met privately with Putin, who probably dominated him and scared him or promised him a gold crown. I used to think he had some scandal on him. but I dont think Trump cares anymore about scandal.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

I do. His pathological narcissism means he'll do anything to preserve his image of himself. Meaning that scandal must be suppressed. Otherwise, why not release the Epstein files?

Daniel M Kimmel's avatar

But he has zero self-awareness. If he had any he would stop publicly humiliating himself all the time.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

It amounts to zero self-awareness, yes, but it's part of his mental illness. That is, in his mind, he really IS a genius, fantastically competent, and so on. He can't afford to have reality intrude, which is why no one around him tells him the truth about anything.

It was a masterclass in dealing with lying hacks in Congress. And I love that he called out what they were going to do (some false charges).

Now the thing is, Maladministration 2.0 seems to have a deep bench of lolyers, even with the recent quitting of Halligan. This clownshoes lolyer fuckery is only going to stop when consequences (sanctions and contempt of court) start being assessed. Till then these creatures in Congress and in the White House know they can keep doing this, knowing they're shielded by both Murc's Law and the inbuilt deference to the unreconstructed in the political and legal systems.
