for me, the perfect 'week in stupid' entry is both stupid and buffoonish, like the South Dakota Rep who actually believes that Mount Rushmore is a portal for communism-spreading demons.

I shit you not, that was a 'week in stupid' item from July 1, 2023.

https://www.jefftiedrich.com/i/130837879/tuesday-the-mystery-of-where-commies-come-from-solved

unfortunately, since the election, 'stupid and buffoonish' has been replaced by 'stupid and evil,' which is a lot less fun to write about.

c'est la vie

Kay-El's avatar

I will posit that stupid, buffoonish and evil can co-exist. We are unfortunate witnesses to all three.

Eileen's avatar

We're still missing one horseman of the apocalypse. STUPID, BUFFOONISH, EVIL, AND APPALLING. I can hear the hooves of apocalyptic morons clamoring to Monterey where witches need wrangling!

Joe Bacon's avatar

Well, he's resentful 82-year old Mick Jagger still can.

lol. Idiot didn’t even get the city right and it’s never been Lovers of Jesus Point—that’s an urban legend. Anyway, if it keeps him away from us, we’ll go along with the stupidity.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Wasn't that some cult's name for it? But never an official name.

Pam McRoman's avatar

No. Guessing something a minister who used the cove for baptisms used. No cults around here that I’ve heard of—only Christians and Hippies.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

It’s an old name.

“The original name for Lovers Point was Lovers of Jesus Point, given to the area in 1875 when it was established as a Christian seaside resort for the Methodist Episcopal Church. The name was later shortened to "Lovers Point" over time, reflecting the location's long-standing association with the retreat, notes the Monterey County Historical Society and Monterey Peninsula Glossary. “

Jeff, I will never understand, in a million years, for TEN years now, how every single reporter, and frankly how every single politician, business leader, religious leader, educational leader, and all the rest, have not asked your “what the f____ question over and over and over again. The failure to do so, and follow up relentlessly on that question, and expose the insanity and inanity that is DJT are to our everlasting shame and now our destruction. Listening to him and following him and yes voting for him, has gone from just wrong and misguided and perhaps ignorant (2016), to horrifying and immoral and craven and cruel(2020) to outright lunacy and insanity and evil(2024). Welcome to the hell hole that is the 2025 USA. We have met the enemy, and he is US. My 72 years of living did not prepare me for national suicide……. I still cannot believe it. I wake up every morning for almost ten years now, and ask, when will the adults in the room show up and rid us of this cancer? Not yet………

rlritt's avatar

I heard Tim Miller of the Bulwark interview Jake Tapper, who will soon work for Bari Weiss. Jake Tapper said its important to report both sides in journalism. Its all about access. Fuck that.

Joe Bacon's avatar

Meanwhile Peter Baker at the Screw York Times is still on the Hunter Biden Penis Hunt.

Patricia Harmanci's avatar

Once again, dear Jeff, you outdid yourself with this post. Couldn’t stop laughing at your take on this administration’s circus of horrors. We all thank you for these brief moments when we stop crying.

rlritt's avatar

What! Does anyone care about Hunter Biden?

DR Darke's avatar

The Right still does because they want to destroy Joe Biden...still.

Geez, it's not like he's Hillary Rodham Clinton, who gave us President Donald Trump rather than President Bernie Sanders, and thus is DESERVING of it...!

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Then he's not a journalist either until he goes on the Eric/Don Jr grift hunt and devotes, say, ten times more coverage (PROMINENT) coverage to their corruption and conflicts of interest.

Hollie Rood's avatar

That’s not journalism 🤬🥴😖😳😡🫥🤡

That’s Tapper actively gaslighting

rlritt's avatar

Yes. That's where we are now.

Julie's avatar

I listen to the Bulwark almost daily and I couldn’t listen to the idiotic and fucked up Jake Tapper interview. What was Tim thinking? Jake Tapper IS the problem. And he is NOT going to ever ask an actual question or probe Donald Trump ever. Because Jake has sunk to his knees. He’s still talking about Joe Biden.

rlritt's avatar

Towards the end of the interview, Tim was asking hard questions and challenging his answers.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

You can do that much better without "access." With "access" you just report what they want you to know. And unless he comes out with a book about Trump's cognitive decline and how his people are covering it up before the end of the year, Jake Tapper should be mocked whenever he tries to call himself a "journalist" because he's not. He's just a water carrier for people in power who curry his favor.

DemBoomerAtLarge's avatar

I can usually take Tim Miller, NOW, even though he lets that old-school repug shit slip through sometimes (how any gay man can be conservative is another one of those why questions). Did he bother to ask Tapper (whom I NEVER watch) why the fuck he's not also rabidly covering The Orange Fascist's obvious health decline by any chance?

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

That is the ONLY question he should be asking. And until Tapper comes up with a credible answer (he can't) he shouldn't be called a journalist. Tapper did a book event this week at a library here and I noticed it revolved around an old book of limited interest, not his Biden one, so I guess he's too scared to talk about it because he knows he screwed up in most people's eyes.

DemBoomerAtLarge's avatar

Were you tempted to show up and confront him?

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

It wasn't worth the $30 or whatever it was that tickets cost.

rlritt's avatar

I know people who are socially liberal and fiscally conservative. People often grow up thinking all Democrats are Jane Fonda, Jessie Jackson and Jill Stein. So they prefer traditional candidates, i.e. Republicans. But a lot of Republicans don't like the far right and corrupt tendencies of the current Republican Party.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Hasn't that "socially liberal/fiscally conservative" thing been debunked for 30 years? Clinton brought down the deficit; Bush exploded it. Same with Obama/Biden and Trump. Republicans spent us into disaster. The idea that Republicans are "fiscally conservative" seems to me based on the idea that they cut spending for the people racists consider "undeserving." Because as we see right now, Republicans are so fiscally reckless they're driving the country into economic ruin.

rlritt's avatar

I agree 100%. They are so busy helping their cronies and instituting "values" they leave the country in shambles for Democrats to clean up

DemBoomerAtLarge's avatar

Yes, there Is no longer a republican party outside of the christofascist oligarchs and their minions. They've been planning this since Reagan. Oh and the R party is chock full of gay men--they just stay closeted to fleece the fucking sheep. So to speak. I'm a 2nd wave feminist from the 70s, so you can imagine how much I love having to live through this again.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

You would think, but republicans don't understand math.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

That would be me. "Waste not, want not" was my family's motto. Spend money to get benefits that will reduce spending down the line. For example, keep infrastructure in repair, so it doesn't fall apart and cost more to rebuild. It's common sense for anyone with a brain who understands consequences (apparently no one in red states.)

Lisa's avatar

And to think, it's been 10 fucking years of this pos in our lives, and we had another president in between, that no one seems to remember. The D never left us so we could enjoy a sane presidency and for that, I hope he continues to rot in real time.

Dorian's avatar

Ten fucking years of accelerating chronic stress has taken a huge psychic toll. Some days are filled with "why bother." But then I hear the memory of my mother's voice, "We soldier on." Proud Roosevelt Democrat, her ashes are churning in their urn.

rlritt's avatar

And his policies are shit for the middle class. The Republicans always touted 2 things. Traditional values, ie Values voters who hated gay people and rap music. And economic conservatives who wanted a good economy. Trump has provided neither. He uses his position to manipulate the market and threaten wealthy people to pay him bribes. And he does it openly. And he has bern convicted of rape and is hiding the Epstein files.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Any "economic conservative" who has stayed with the GOP after the last 30 years is using that as a cover for something else. We haven't seen fiscal responsibility from the GOP in decades.

rlritt's avatar

Absolutely. Its been proven that the last few Republican administrations have caused recession and increased the deficit.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

I think Eisenhower was the last (only) one.

Oh, he probably wrote some of it. There's still his signature tic of capitalizing random words that don't need it. Some of the bullshit religious narrative described here reminds me of the t-shirt being worn by one of the New York Yankees when trump was invited into their fascist-supporting locker room: "Jesus Won" was plastered on the t-shirt.

Meanwhile, the entire team, or almost the entire team (?), stood around trump like one of his propaganda rally photos -- all with big grins and smirks on their faces, with the guy with the t-shirt standing right next to trump, and even Aaron Judge right there yukking it up with the rest of them.

It was an absolute pleasure watching a Canadian team kick their asses and eliminate them from the playoffs. Must've hurt a lot more that they were Canadian. Because in this weird timeline, the U.S. is suddenly not friends with Canadians, and we need to boo their national anthem at Yankee Stadium, etc.

A little venting today.

Eileen's avatar

Guess what! The Blue Angels won't be at Fleet Week in San Francisco this week because of the government shutdown....So the Canadian Snowbirds came to the rescue and are filling in to put on the air show. For extra fun, the Colombian Navy is cruising in with a tall ship. Hopefully, Stephen Miller won't try to blow it up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9g8LZ6Q68o

Douglas Paul Truhlar's avatar

I am a Canadian ‘appreciator’ but that anthem is way too long, it puts people that are excited to watch a fight at a hockey game to sleep, not an easy task. I kid the Canucks but they are the neighbor of the great North our friends, repairs are needed but now they know the REAL USA so they might hate us forever, couldn’t blame them for that.

verne's avatar

i also cheered the birds beating the evil empire for the same reasons and i hope they take the WS too.

Liz and Max the No. 1 Cat's avatar

Well, not to be a contrarian, but are all the players on the Blue Jays Canadian? Americans getting their asses kicked by a Canadian hockey team is even better. Much more likely to have a higher percentage of actual Canadians on the team.

Will's avatar
Oct 11Edited

Yep, I wouldn't be surprised if many of the Blue Jays are maga, too, and probably many or all of the other baseball teams. There's no escaping it. But the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers were probably the most visibly supportive of the orange buffoon.

(On the same day that the Yankees invited trump into their locker room, a few of the Tigers did the 'trump dance' after getting base hits, and during the season you could detect a few fascist dog whistles here and there. Meanwhile, Colin Kaepernick was disappeared from his sport many years ago for being concerned about police brutality and gun violence. Politics for me, and not for thee.)

That crashing of the stock market is a scam he has been pulling since his first term. The market trades up and Trump tells his friends and family to sell and then makes a stupid remark that causes the market to crash. They buy back at a much lower price to close their short position at a profit. It infuriates me because its such blatent market manipulation. And small traders are of out luck.

Lisa's avatar

As a small trader, that's why I pulled out of the GOP stock market when he got re-elected. I couldn't stand the chaos that I knew would be coming.

rlritt's avatar

Me too! I was very small stock option trader. And I counted on a stable market to make a small profit. When he got elected the first time, after getting creamed a couple of times because of his stock manipulation, I had to quit. Then he got elected again and it happened again.
