they do occasionally use the portmanteau method to track all of their hate-based feel-feels -- anyone who is [thing they hate] must also be [other thing they hate]. But yes, it must also be terribly taxing to even have to TALK about all of those things at one time.

I’m glad you did “racism week”, even though in this day and age there should be no racism. It is mind boggling to know that the biggest racist of all time is once again running for president and his followers are stupidly (ignorance can be fixed, stupidity cannot) going right along with him. I saw today that John Woo, architect of Dubya's torture program, is teaching at Berkley. WTF??!!

Expand full comment
David Skoglund's avatar

John Woo has been at Berkeley for over 10 years. Many campus protests over that.

Expand full comment
un poco loco's avatar

I saw that in passing a while back, but never investigated (don't remember when/why; maybe early in the pandemic?) So I looked it up just now. Want to know what John Woo thinks of Berkeley?

(this is from Berkeleyside.org, an online news site -- and the interview was in 2010. He's been there a lot longer than I realized.)

"In a interview with the Los Angeles Times, Yoo, who teaches at the Boalt School of Law, said 'I think of myself as being West Berlin during the Cold War, a shining beacon of capitalism and democracy surrounded by a sea of Marxism.' ...

“'It’s like looking at the panoramic displays of troglodytes sitting around the campfire with their clubs,' Yoo told the Times. 'Here, it’s tie-dye and marijuana. It’s just like the 1960s, with the Vietnam War still to protest.'"

I've heard there have been a few changes at Berkeley since I spent any time there, which, to be honest, was in the 80s, but actually putting Dubya's torture guy on the faculty? jhfc

I mean, they would just LOVE him in TEXASS, don't you think? He could have settled somewhere around Vidor with the KKK and been a "shining beacon" of assholery among all the other shining beacons of... er, something... like, the sheriff who used waterboarding back in the 80s to get "confessions" was only a couple of counties over, so you'd think he'd feel right at home. Dumbya might have even painted a little picture for him! Gov Dr Evil Hot Wheels would def have hired him as a consultant on the border! but as much as he hates Berkeley, his wife likes it, so (at least as of 2010) he's not moving.

It was also a good way to listen to old vinyl -- some of mine goes back to the 1910s, so not something I want to wear out. (Grandma had a LOT of early wax records, mostly Gilbert & Sullivan. My sense of humor didn't fall far from THAT tree lol.) It's on the home network but we can also get to it from Plex and most Apple stuff.

[There's also Apple music -- and Apple gets more problematic the longer Tim Cook is in charge -- but as IT nerds we have to have computers and a secure network. linux works well enough for some stuff, but not for all of it, and Microsoft is just not an option. Hard enough to live with it at work. Apple is getting more and more prescriptive about using any of its infrastructure, which usually just makes me go around anything I don't HAVE to use, but then I found their bebop playlists, good enough to corrupt my ethics... ]

Sorry for the dissertation; but geeks just got to geek...
