Not to belittle anyone’s religion here. But I have had a lot of dealings with the LDS. Maybe they will decide to secede from the Union.

As for Boston/ Massachusetts politics, I loved the movie The Instigators because it just seemed so right on.

We have a similar situation in Honolulu where I say that the only difference between the local crooks and the crooks in Washington is that the crooks in Washington have more money and are better organized.

Yes he is. "Both sides of the fence" doesn't do it justice: Not only was he governor of my home state of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007, he played a significant role in bringing about Commonwealth Care, my state's forerunner of the ACA.

I don't quite know what to make of this. MA, liberal as it is, does have a fondness for Republican governors, in large part because the Democratic-controlled legislature is somewhere between hidebound and embarrassing. Charlie Baker (governor 2015–2023) was pretty good, but since the state GOP has gone full MAGA some of us doubt he could get elected now.

Expand full comment
Walt Svirsky's avatar

Mittens is a bit of a mystery. He got that Commonwealth Care Act passed in Massachusetts and it really paved the way for the ACA. He has to govern those Utah Mormons, though, so, I’m sure being even moderately progressive is a potential danger to his career.

Expand full comment
A.J. Madison's avatar

Mittens has always been a political pragmatist. He didn't say he detested the Commonwealth Care Act with every fiber of his being, or hated the Commonwealth's Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage becuz his mormon faith made him a pinheaded reactionary, knowing full well his opposition would quickly evaporate all of his political support, thou back channel sources got the word out anyway. IMHO, MA loves lazy governors, becuz as observed above, the extremely liberal Commonwealth congress can be pursue some very far left ideas. Want to not be elected governor of MA, say you're going to spend billions on a replacement for Logan. Want to destroy your political support, promise to destroy the Indian reservation's monopoly (except horse & dog racing) on gambling. Just balance the budget, like Dukakis did, and you'll be in office for a long time.

Expand full comment
Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

???? Sounds like you don't know much about Massachusetts state politics. The state legislature is not "extremely liberal." It's dominated by old-style Boston-area Democrats, mostly of Irish and Italian descent. One of their top priorities is keeping those hotheaded liberals at bay, especially in the House. The MA state legislature ranks near the bottom on most of the ways that state legislatures are assessed, e.g., transparency, top-down hierarchical structure, and access to impartial research (in the absence of a legislative research bureau, legislators wind up relying on lobbyists for their information).

Expand full comment
A.J. Madison's avatar

Aye. It's been a minute (years TBH). There is a strong conservative streak in the Commonwealth's politics. I stand corrected. And you're absolutely correct about the lack of transparency. Imagine, the then mayor nearly convinced the commonwealth to make a multi-billion dollar commitment to hosting the Olympics, with laughable time lines & cost estimates, assuming the Olympics could use Harvard's sports facilities, and not revealing the mayor had deep ties with a wealthy New England contractor/developer. Secretary of Labor under Biden, indeed. Biden did the Commonwealth a favor.

There's a video out there of him spewing this in front of SENIOR CITIZENS and every one is nodding along and applauding him for this stance. He's promising to take away their LIFELONG PAID-IN MONEY and they voted for him. THEN he sat there when President Biden trapped them during his SOTU with their booing the very idea that they were planning to 'touch' Social Security, raising both of his hands with a 'WTF is Biden talking about' expression on his idiotically smug face and even mouthing it along with those 2 dumb-fuck females screaming 'LIAR'. Yet - that's exactly HOW he was elected! Did he also promise the people of Utah extra money from another source to replace SS?
