It's not difficult to read and get the gist of simple things like signs or menus, if you know any Romance language at all. The spoken form is opaque, though. But the country has catered to British expats for ages, and American tourists as well more lately, so in the cities at least a surprising percentage of the population has learned English in school and from watching TV and movies.

Portugal is much easier and friends who have already made the move love the place.

those are harder countries to move to...they take time to get approval...but if you already have the connections those are great choices !
