Sorry, I'm just really angry right now.

Cat Cafe's avatar

AHHHHH! We're the SAME AGE! I longed to go to Berkeley High but my mother insisted I had to go to the "Anna Head School for Girls" and wear their wretched UNIFORM UGHHHHHH (joke's on me, it's now "Head-Royce" and very college-prep) but then it was just UGHHHH debutantes and such. OMG also Class of 1968! We have had exactly the same experiences-----all I can say is (1) Edy's hot fudge sundae (2) the See's on Shattuck (3) Virginia Bakery. Where'd you go to college? I went to UC Berkeley so kept it local haha.

Expand full comment
longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

Well, well, well. Did you know Margaret Elson at Anna Head? She left after eighth grade when she was able to persuade her parents to send her to West Campus for ninth grade. We were best friends for the next four years. You went to school up by campus? or had they moved to Oakland by that time? I also went to Berkeley, started in high school and went until 71, then dropped out and didn't come back until 78. I always lived independently (starting June 16, 1968), or with boyfriends, or as a live in babysitter, so unless you were a member of the Radical Student Union, I probably wouldn't have known you. As a Classical Greek major, I spent most of my time doing homework, and the rest of my time doing radical stuff or babysitting. The only girl I really remember is Kathy Gilberd, who became very active with soldiers trying to get out of the military. Of course, I remember Edy's, the See's and Virginia Bakery, which was owned by people both my mother and younger brother-in-law knew very well, but the name escapes me now. However, I spent most of my time in high school hanging out on the Avenue or in the Med. I met my husband in Robbie's in 1966, not as bad as Pepe's Pizza, but close.

Expand full comment
Cat Cafe's avatar

omg SAME. I'm pretty sure Margaret was in my class, I can go look up in my yearbook at some point. I don't have a good memory for most of the girls but IIRC she was lovely. There were a few much nicer girls & she was one of them. I started there in 7th grade when it was the old wood buildings and then they moved to Oakland in the middle of my 8th grade year.

Awesome that you lived independently. My parents would only let me go to Berkeley if I LIVED AT HOME (to be fair to them, I was younger/skipped), but STILL! I ended up going thru in 3 years and going to grad school just so I could get $$ and move out (and then, like you, in w/ boyfriend, something I never heard the end of).

Love that you were a radical. I was only medium-radical, more radical in h.s., that's when I hung out on the Avenue and in the Med so we MIGHT have weirdly interacted!!! In college I was a music major so was mostly studying, practicing, performing, orchestra, etc etc.

LOVE that you studied classical greek, what an awesome major. What did you end up doing? I finished a doctorate (hated grad school but my Dad, a professor, insisted I had to finish & he was a very controlling & overbearing European dad and I couldn't get out from under him in my early 20's), I was a professor for a couple of years, couldn't stand academia. Or "musicology." Wanted to be creative!

Got married & moved to L.A. Husband encouraged to live my own life. Always wanted to be a writer, so quit academia and have been working happily as a writer for the past 40+ years--still working. Gee this is fun talking to you! Are you an avid birdwatcher? I had a bf who was a very serious birdwatcher so know a bit about it but for some reason my eyesight just isn't specific enough. Tell me what you've been up to these past forty years!

Perfect that we meet here at the place of Our Lord Jeff Tiedrich. We can take this to DM's if you want!

This needless theft and violence (and your celebrations of it) will be splashed all over the conservative propaganda matrix to reinforce the notion that antifa is lawless, destructive and violent - that they glorify violence, that they physically harm people over offensive words. It's wrong and unhelpful, and I'm ashamed of you all. This act and its celebration directly undermines all the "antifa just means opposing fascism" messaging. Some of those people are equally ‘as old' AND his own people! What the FUCK does his AGE have to do with it? VILE is VILE as far as I’m concerned. HE went out there to attack and berate peaceful protesters. He fucked around and found out how REAL LIFE works. I find it ‘glorious’ to see, when the haters do something particularly stupid, despite their ‘age’. The kid with the skateboard stole the man’s glasses and ran off - could be an expensive/ badly needed prescription. He chased the thief who violently yanked off his glasses (as most people would) and fell. Then he was tripped and went down again, coming up bloody. Yes, old people are generally slower and weaker and prone to falling. Ridiculing that is ableist. Attacking an old person and laughing when they hurt themselves in response is just gross. The old man being a bigot doesn’t excuse it - legally or morally. Laughing at someone tripping an old man is worse. You people are the awful rage-bait Fox News is dying to display.

YOU seem to have a personal beef with ME after first declaring that 'lots of people' - are 'glorifying the tripping and bloodying of an old man'. I've already said: I'M quite likely considerably older than he is and wouldn't DREAM of going out into a PEACEFUL PROTEST to cast HOMOPHOBIC SLURS towards others. IF I did, I'd fully expect to reap what I chose to sow. Was that your Dad, perchance? Is THAT why you're so furious? IF your sole reason is that he's 'old' then he needs some serious counseling, both for his probable alcohol consumption AND his hate. (I didn't see him as particularly 'old' at all with my first couple of watchings - only a nasty-ass middle-to older-aged BIGOT). I refuse to deal with someone so fixated on age as an excuse for their viciousness. Kindly stop attacking me. I'm not playing your games any longer.

Well, I didn't have a kid until I was 32. I was speaking of people younger than that. I started demonstrating when I was 15. People having kids now clearly are not aware of the climate crisis. I know people are going to complain again about what a bitch I am. I read it all the time. It's kind of a code word for "realistic". Don't waste your time.

Exactly. I'm 68, which means I was in my teens in the '70s and I never smoked pot, wore mini-skirts, had sex before marriage, went to wild parties, listened to rock 'n roll, skipped school and snuck out of the house in the middle of the night. I never danced or wore bikinis on the beach, or participated in anti-Vietnam protests.

No, not me, baby. I was sitting home learning to knit and cook, dreaming of becoming a housewife in an airconditioned house, with wall-to-wall carpet in shag green, with 6 babies and a husband bending his secretary over his desk.

Tiffany there reminds me of a guy who shows up periodically at our grocery store (in a very blue area) with his poor oppressed wife. Wife does all the shopping, while the dude stands around begging for people to interact with him--wearing his hat and his stupid shirt and the whole bit. It is HILARIOUS because NOBODY does anything to provoke him or whatever--we all just sort of note that he's there and go about our shopping ostentatiously ignoring him while he's standing in the produce aisle like, "LOOK AT ME!" We give his wife sympathetic looks because she's always hunched up and looking at the ground like, "please don't notice me. Please ignore my husband."

He does nothing to help his wife shop and just stands around like "do you see my HAT? Aren't you MAD?" and once his wife pays for their stuff he packs it in and leaves. I've never once seen anyone say anything to him beyond, "excuse me--could I reach back behind you for an apple? Thank you."

Liz and Max the No. 1 Cat's avatar

Tiffany (of course it's a Tiffany) also doesn't know the difference between "who's" and "whose". One of my pet peeves. It's not that hard people. "Who's is a contraction of "who is". If your sentence makes sense if you say "who is" instead of "who's", you're using the correct one. If it doesn't make sense, you need to use "whose". Thus endeth today's grammar lesson and apologies if someone has pointed this out already.
