Well, it does take place in Scotland, and concerns a Scottish king....

It's considered bad luck, to say the name. Old theater superstition, like saying “ break a leg !” instead of good luck before the show.

Just reading both Dean Blundell's (Canadian) posts and Malcolm Nance's(Former US Intelligence) posts. They are saying looks like US is getting ready to invade Greenland, and Trump's latest reasoning is because he did not get the Nobel Peace Prize. Well, he certainly isn't going to get it now.

Dean Blundell

https://open.substack.com/pub/deanblundell/p/breaking-trump-says-hes-no-longer?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

Malcolm Nance

https://substack.com/home/post/p-185064007

The 1500 troops stationed in Alaska supposedly ready to go into Minnesota are really going into Greenland according to Nance. He is about to go there himself. He lays out why he thinks this and what he thinks they will do when they get there. He sees this happening within the next few days.

Ruth Ann Orlansky's avatar

If that happens, things are going to get very interesting very fast! Can't we have some boring times for a while? "Interesting times" may kill us.

Kristy Kanen's avatar

My anxiety is not helped by this craziness.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

I think tens of millions of us are in that boat.

Gail Dragoo's avatar

That’s right. Follow Blundell (Canadian) and Nance. They know what’s really going on.

Linda Weide's avatar

Gail, I had already read the horrid letter to Norway in Dean's Substack and it just gets worse and worse as he talks about the Troops ready to go to "Minnesota" are really for Greenland. Malcolm says that means they are a few days out from their mission. So, if this happens, will it happen on Wednesday, the day that Trump is supposed to speak in person at Davos? Will he actually show up to gloat? Switzerland is not NATO so they have to remain neutral.

Can Europe take troops hostage then, or does Trump think he can deploy all of them and their families to where? Germany has around 39,000. Can there be housing for all of them in the US? In Russia? Sounds like not very carefully thought out actions.

My husband says that he has heard others say Nance has been wrong on things. So, he does not trust him. I am saying, we shall see. I would hope Nance would be wrong, but Jake Broe also said that even if a lot of Generals said no to invading Greenland he would shop around until he found one who would do this. I think Congress should be telling people in the military just what will happen to them when this regime is over. Show them what being court martialled looks like. Not in hero movies where the hero gets off because they are wrongfully charged, but in real life. Maybe some cases and stats.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

I do Gail, everyone should… put Zev into the post as well!

Nancy Potter's avatar

Having US troops invade Greenland while he's at Davos - given the economic fallout it seems insane, but since when does that mean it wouldn't happen?

Stranger Than Friction's avatar

Could the EU start manipulating the approximately trillion dollars of US debt they hold and cause our economy to crash and burn? Magic 8 Ball says YES. Does Secretary Scott Bessent understand any of this? It's clear that the Angry Toddler in Chief does not.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

The EU is the U.S.' single biggest creditor. If they even start to cash in all the paper they hold, we're toast.

Paula Dean's avatar

We are already disconnected from the world financially. There's no coming back for us, because the rest of the world has and/or is building financial and trade relationships with each other and China. We have lost every other country's trust. On top of that, we are choosing oil/petroleum based investments while the global economy is investing in environmentally sustainable energy. We temporarily have the lead in AI development, but that is changing fast, due to the way our government is weaponizing it against our own citizens. Unregulated AI is utterly horrific, but those who utilize it wisely will have huge advantages.

I highly recommend Johan's series covering the global impacts of tRump's disastrous withdrawal from solid relationships and complete isolation. This damage may be irreversible. We need to strengthen our communities immediately!

His take on Canada was most eye opening Linda. I’m not sure if it’s in that post but Deans been active 24-7, just like Malcolm.

Linda Weide's avatar

Yes Patrick. If you scroll up, you will see that I posted pieces from both of them. However, Dean has his take on the 11th Airborn, or whatever they are, Arctic Special forces, from Nance. They are traveling to Greenland this week with others and are going to interview people on the ground. Nance is now worried that there will already be US military there when they arrive. However, Europe should note the 1500, and make sure they have more. Questions arise like it US captures European soldiers, can Europe take American military stationed in their countries, who have not been removed back to the states hostage? Prisoners of war.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

We’re mired in sub-zero temperatures in all of ‘Sota , can’t imagine Greenland will be much different… these ICE goons, don’t appear so violent today, many of them got balloons tossed at them late yesterday, dubious of what wet substances might have been in them.

Dean mentioned Canada would be the the real prize considering the vast land mass, coupled with several mines necessary for AI. Obtaining Greenland, plus Alaska puts Canada in a precarious position.

Linda Weide's avatar

Yes. However, Canada is not just going to roll over, just like Ukraine did not. Trump is apparently thinking he can have the US military active on all sorts of fronts, sans any allies. We shall see.

I think the Greenlanders should be prepared to spray Americans with water, freezing them and all their equipment.

Linda Weide's avatar

It does not matter. He is ineligible because he is making war on his own people, and now elsewhere. The US military was always the wildcard to me because it has a lot of White Supremacists in it. None of them are loyal to the US constitution. I bet a lot of them are signing up now that they expect to see racist action around the planet.

How do y’all reckon the history books are gonna cover this shite for the next generations? Will there be wildly different curricular materials between different states or rival districts within states? Will there emerge a schism between the cosmopolitan areas and the hillbilly backwoods that suppress any efforts to deal with all this responsibly? I ask in part because I taught history for many years and understand propaganda. And I really do care about this question.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

Germany mandates by law that every schoolchild learn about the Holocaust. but we live in a much dumber country

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Just as my parents’ generation would never buy a Ford, opinions about Germany began to shift after VWs became so obviously interesting (I had a ‘62 VW bus with 40hp) and then began to see how Germans had wrestled with their guilt. But I fear a huge swath of our populace will never, never admit culpability after this all comes crashing down.

Susie's avatar

I’m afraid of just that, too. 🥺 We suck, both collectively and individually, at remorse.

2Cats2Furious's avatar

The MAGA movement is actively erasing the truth about American history, because they fear it makes white citizens (and especially white men) look bad. And we can’t have that!

Robert Eckert's avatar

So many of our current troubles still trace back to our original sins: the theft of land from the red man and labor from the black man, the killings we had to do to make those thefts stick, and the lies we had to tell kids so they wouldn't be ashamed about the thefts and the killings.

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Don’t overlook the manner in which capital enforced their will on miners, on slaughterhouse workers, on farmers and homesteaders, on tradesmen, on millworkers—and especially on women—until daring women and men insisted that the injustice be addressed. It’s been decades since meaningful structural work was performed to make our society more just, and now the bastards have once again taken up the whip and the chain. Things will change. That’s certain.

Aren't there people who still defend Nixon? Certainly when he died, he suddenly became the Great Statesman -- China, EPA, etc. -- but that other little incident was glossed over. He was no Trump, but he did some damage, as I recall.

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Nixon had plenty of faults, plenty, and also that experience with Roy Cohn, but he also had some brains, some discipline, some familiarity with the DC establishment (for better and worse), and acknowledged that the national interest demanded a certain regard for governance by a few principles. He implemented OSHA, EPA, etc.

Of course, he was also a traitor, conspiring to prolong the Vietnam War, and sent tens of thousands to die needlessly in that conflict. But he rose from a level of poverty, knew tragedy as an element of life, and could occasionally put aside his petty grievances for a moment. I think he loved his wife and family, at least. The difference between then and now is insane.

zuzu's avatar

Also, Nixon in China is a really good opera. He makes for a good tragic opera character because he had layers.

He was a brilliant man who had no real reason to be as evil as he was, but he was filled with resentment, and that twisted him. That's catnip for operatic and dramatic roles. He's basically tailor-made for the stage.

Trump's not really that interesting because he's just a spoiled rich boy who's never heard no and is just a tyrant. There's not a lot of depth to him. He's not acting out of hubris or thwarted ambition or because he had a vision for how to make things better that got corrupted. He's always been spoiled and corrupt. He's always been a crook. He's always been a conman. He's always been a failure. He gets ahead by failing upwards and buying off officials, and that's just not that fun to watch.

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Nixon won a scholarship to Yale, but could not afford to travel there (and his family needed him).

Lise Buranen's avatar

No argument here -- Nixon looks like a Sunday school teacher in comparison to Donny. Nixon was infinitely smarter, but so is my Labrador (kinder, too). My point is not that Nixon is just as bad -- though after he resigned, I never thought it could get much worse (silly me) -- but that the whitewashing and sanewashing of unpleasant history will happen again.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

IMO, Nixon, corrupt as he was, was was a piker compared with Dubya. And neither of them was in the same universe as Donny Demento.

To tell you the truth, confidentially, there were a lot of Communists here. Oh, the Jews? Well, there weren’t really many Jews in this neighborhood. I hid a Jew for six weeks. The second, being the cartoon "Family guy" where Brian the talking dog (who is the smartest of the family members) is touring Germany and asks why there is no history in the brochure from 1939-1945, to which the tour guide snaps "We were all on vacation!"

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Exactly, Frank. When the rethugs were in the minority, they were a monolith, acting as one, relentless in their obstruction. They managed to throw sand in the gears more than once.

Dems simply refuse to do that. At least some Dems keep voting to confirm all or most of Rump's nominations, and a whole bloc of them voted to approve the latest NDAA, FFS. They've caved twice on shutdowns and gotten nothing in return (no, the vote on ACA subsidies doesn't count).

But, as someone lectured me last week, expecting the Dems to act in unison isn't fair, because they've never had to do it before(!).

rlritt's avatar

Yes, but the only thing they can do is filibuster and shut down the government, which is what Trump and the Republicans want because they are following the Project 2025 ideology which is install a Unitary Executive to make all decisions, i.e. a dictatorship.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

Endorse impeachment. Call on our allies to block him. Mobilize the Democrats to act as one party instead of a flock of chickens outnumbered by weasels.

rlritt's avatar

The Democrats already have written articles of impeachment. However the Speaker of the House is a Republican and will not bring it to a vote. We need to elect more Democrats. Or, given the republican starving public schools of funds never learned it, because they actually think "we are a 'christiun' nation." Which we are not, and have never been.

Tess's avatar

As a retired educator, I remember that some states required all schools in the state to use same texts-instead of districts choosing the texts, as we did. It seemed odd to me that schools could not preview and select their own materials to use. Good question Neal! I too care about this question….

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Indeed, that’s one of the very worst features of our school systems. You’re probably aware of the work of Mel and Norma Gabler.

https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/the-guardians-who-slumbereth-not/

Tess's avatar

Was not …thanks for the info!

Pam Humphrey's avatar

Yeah. Thanks, Gablers.

Bob's avatar

The infamous Texas school book committee/cabal. And what they decided is picked up by other states, mostly those with education systems at the bottom.

Kelly Ann O'Brien's avatar

Oklahoma would be one of those states.

rlritt's avatar

That's is true, but its more complicated. School boards, especially in some states, dont spend money on schools. Its true that school boards can be made up of eccentric people. That's why I volunteered to be involved in any area I could when my kids were in school. If you don't like what's going on, run for school board.

rlritt's avatar

However I worked for years for a textbook publisher and a lot of work by many excellent educators goes in to writing textbooks. The reason districts select textbooks is because its easier and cheaper and because if separate schools have individual textbooks ( and they're really teaching the same thing), it makes standardized testing difficult. You have to understand that states keep reducing public school budgets that 1) school districts use actually the same textbooks for years. 2) and buying in bulk give states a better price.

Bob's avatar

I understand all that. Typically, districts select and purchase books. But Texas mandates books at the state level for all roughly 1,100 districts.

Deb Markley's avatar

Reallly excellent question, Neal. Before we get to that, however, is the task of promoting the real accounts of some of our un-pretty history that the far right is trying to bury.

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Indeed. But I’m afraid that a LOT of folks have had their brains scrambled and reprogrammed by the worst among us, probably for three generations.

rlritt's avatar

I hate to say this (becauae Im always repeating myself) but television does a lot of damage. The only reason Trump is president was because he was on a game show for 12 yrs. where he played a smart businessman. His voters absolutely believe that he was a brilliant business man because he played one on TV.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

And the vapid Kartrashians are ones to be emulated.

Bob's avatar

I’ll never forget the look on Bob Kardashian’s face when OJ was acquitted. He was ashen, mouth open, could not believe it happened.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Well....it might be more accurate to say that the only reason he was on the ballot was that he was on a game show.

rlritt's avatar

Well, that may be true.

Charles Austin's avatar

At least. And we've about lost our living memory of WWII.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Yes, my dad (drafted at 19) was one of the youngest, and has been gone for two decades, and would be 100, were he still among the living.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Our Dads would not like this

Lise Buranen's avatar

True, but... I know I've often been called too idealistic (among other things), but after four decades in higher education, I'm not convinced that this is a given. At worst, it's almost complying in advance. Then again, I'm in California, not Texas or Oklahoma (apologies and condolences to the sane folks who live there). K, gotta run -- time for my PA meeting (Pollyannas Anonymous).

Sher''s avatar

Excellent point.

They won’t teach history. They will watch WWE videos and recite the 10 commandments.

HI2thDoc's avatar

Haha, that makes sense, Joe, since Demented DonOld made Linda McMahon Secretary of Diseducation

SethTriggs's avatar

Depends on if Texas or any other unreconstructed state has a say. There'll be a lot of whitewashing of this.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

It is what propagandists and gaslighters live for.

Pam Humphrey's avatar

Having grown up in Texas and taught in school that the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery, I think I can answer your question, Neal. That war was caused by the USA, of course, because the federal government refused to recognize the God-given rights of the states. It was a tragedy. The Confederate states had no choice but to secede. The North stole victory from our real heroes…oh lord, we’re in freaking trouble, aren’t we?

Nancy Potter's avatar

I worry that American history books regarding this era will have to be written in Canada and other countries. The regime is going to try to memory-hole a lot of this and it may be a decade or more before a lot of Americans will treat this as history and not partisan attacks.

PunkAtHeart's avatar

Same. There’s a real concern that if things keep going as they are that those who are able to read and write will be disappeared.

rlritt's avatar

Who will buy them? The purchase of books is up to the state and school boards. I sent my daughter to private schools run by fairly liberal people for Jr and senior high. My son preferred public school. But my son is way more liberal minded than my daughter.

Pam Humphrey's avatar

Left up to the state (and the Gableroids).

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

The right-wing, red-state written textbooks, will fawn obsequiously, like a Bill O'Reilly (ghostwritten) book. Full of lies, and absolutely diametrically opposed to reality" factoids". Rather like their books are now.

Charles Austin's avatar

Those books are trash, like their( ghost) author.

rlritt's avatar

Is his book a textbook? What subject?

Funny story, there was big adoption in CA the 4 big publishers were presenting a US History text. We were the only publisher whose text was not chosen because one of the committee members was an East Indian American and our book did not contain any mention of the contributions to the US by East Indians.

You have more power than you think over textbooks.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Sorry my comment wasn't clear, I meant that they will be as phony and propagandic as O'Reilly's false depiction of historical figures. He pretends they are accurate, they are right-wing rewrites.

Pam Humphrey's avatar

Well, of course they are.

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

Well,I think fried pig skins will still be popular with both groups but that's about it.

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

May his memory be a blessing. Few have succeeded so well opening the windows like he did.

Charles Austin's avatar

Great question, Neal. From one former history teacher to another.

Lisa K. Obrien's avatar

This occupies my thought as well. I used to think that the teaching of history was standardized, and through normal people’s diaries and letters history had become more honest, nuanced, thorough, and true. Now, after seeing true Holocaust deniers boldly crawling out of their holes, for instance, I really wonder about the future.

Sandra Swail's avatar

The media has been so evilly complicit. Newspapers are part of the historical record. Reality is whatever they say it is. I am not hopeful.

Aleksandra Wolska's avatar

It's very possible that there won't be history to be covered by history books. Just debris floating through space in slow motion: Statue of Liberty's torch, child's pacifier, someone's car keys, a piano split in half. Nobody to see it or write about it, the void humming.

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

That’s a jolly outlook!

Well, unfortunately, he knows that. He has said if the Democrats get in power he will be impeached. Im sure Miller has a plan to prevent the Democrats taking power. It has to do with declaring Minneapolis a "war zone" (which is hysterical because my best friend lives in suburb there and everything is fine and status quo). Its part of taking rights away. No voting, no Democrats.

So let me get this straight: Norway didn’t give him the Nobel Peace Prize, so he’s punishing Denmark? I guess any territories north of Maine are interchangeable.

Lairbo's avatar

And, the Nobel Committee isn't part of the government of Norway. I wonder if Trump blames Obama for his not getting an Emmy Award for The Apprentice? I know, silly question, of course he does.

Obama has been living rent-free in his tiny brain since the ill-fated White House Correspondent's Dinner.

Ruth Ann Orlansky's avatar

Trump probably thinks the Nobel Committee is appointed by the Prime Minister, which is, of course, the way HE'D do it! So, he takes his complaint to the top and says "it's all your fault, so I'm taking Greenland instead."

Dolly turned 80: Icon, Ally, Legend—Today the patron saint of rhinestone-covered radical kindness turns 80. Nine times she's come out swinging for LGBTQ+ rights: from writing "family is family" in 1991, to calling out Christians for judging, to defending trans bathroom access ("if I have to pee, I'm gon' pee"), to gifting a bejeweled guitar to Texas drag queen Brigitte Bandit during the state's anti-drag crusade. She wrote "Travelin' Thru" for Transamerica. She made sure marriage equality was policy at Dollywood after staff turned away a lesbian patron. At 80, she's still teaching us that fierce love isn't soft—it's steel wrapped in sequins.

Richard Von Busack's avatar

I firmly believe that if Dolly was ten years younger, we could slap a crown on her and end this cold civil war. If she was our constitutional monarch, both sides would respect her.

Analysts and news reports (such as BBC Verify and AP Fact Check) have noted that many of these conflicts were already de-escalating, were not active "wars" in the traditional sense, or were very short-lived.

I think this drooling old sack of shit is asleep most of the time, and that his minions fight for his approval of social media posts. He's obviously incapable of focusing long enough to think about punctuation, so best case scenario is speech-to-text.

Since this method of "communication" was allowed to become normal, even nominal checks on nut-nut behavior are long gone. We have some seriously evil shits racing to the bottom, likely to justify the immense amounts of public money they are siphoning into their own offshore accounts.

Greed, hatred, venality, and self preservation as they loot the burning house they themselves set afire.

The billionaires who own most of everything are fine with all of us dying, since they only see as far as next quarter's P&L statements (if they even care about that).

This is what unchecked capitalism hath wrought, and apparently we're not even close to the breaking point.

Miller’s getting all his goals out while knowing trumps so fucked up ppl will just laugh & mock trump, while in the same time, telling the entire world what the little Nazi is & will be doing.
