there was a whole side-drama that I chose not to get into in today's post. Republicans (and Katy Tur) are mad at Jill Biden for calling Hunter her son, when he is technically her step-son. the GOP is treating this as a major crime, because who the fuck knows why

Expand full comment
Dee Whitman's avatar

For the record: Hunter was 7 years and 4 months old when Jill and his father married, after meeting two or two-plus years earlier. So he was probably 6, possibly 5, when his father integrated Jill into family activities -- in other words, when she became a mother figure to Hunter (and to Beau, who was about a year older).

But, hey, the party of family values is opposed to a traumatized, motherless boy taking comfort from calling the woman who stepped into that role "Mom", and from her viewing herself as his mother for the past 47 or so years. (Katy Tur can go straight to hell for joining their hateful chorus.)

I think Tur's reason for her deference to trump is in the pages of her memoir where she talks about her father, Bob who was violent and rage filled. In covering trump, she found him to be the same and said because of it, she knew how to cover trump; how to approach him and speak to him because of how much he was like her father. Her father transitioned and is now Zoey when Tur was already out of the house, but her deference to trump I suspect could be due to "daddy issues". She doesn't have a relationship with her dad so.... Just a thought. (And hell no... I didn't read the book - but saw an interview where she spoke about it.) I personally find her arrogant, rude and smug in interviewing guests (and interruptive as hell).

Jill became Mom - married Joe a few years later- and raised them as her own. How many natural born parents did so well ? They are a family.

okey donkey, so the boys lost their mother, and Jill became their step- mom—an the only maternal presence in their lives. maybe she even adopted them. she’s their mother-in- fact. Calling her step-mother would unfairly mis-state her role and constantly remind an emphasize their loss to those poor young boys. and there’s no ambiguity or competitonn

im a stepmother myself. when my step-sons’ mother was living i would NEVER have called myself their “mother.” she has been gone a while, and i still say stepmom; my stepsons call be by my first name.

Why do Republicans object to Jill? Because their definition of “family” is overly legalistic and repressive. Remind you of any of their other positions. Because “hate”and division are their preferred postures.

Perhaps they should ponder the contrast between the support in court the Biden family gave hunter to the support Trump’s family gave him.
