Just read a WaPo article about a recent bit of science involving zircon crystals from the Apollo 17 mission and sure enough, there was some pseudo-scientist wannabe regurgitating Velikovsky's Worlds in Collision, which was published in 1950. (One of its claims is that Venus was a comet bouncing around the solar system just 4500 years ago, causing all sorts of havoc -- like floods.) I'd like to think we've always been rational and scientific, but no; the mainstream media was quite enthusiastic about Velikovsky's theories when it was published, at least until they were thoroughly ridiculed by actual scientists.
Just think: now that the right wing has done a truly bang-up job of trashing what's taught in public schools, it will be even easier to convince new generations that rogue Venus was sent by God to flood the world.
