by the way, everyone and their sibling with a substack is doing a live chat for tonight's debate. I'm not, because I tried one for the Donny-Biden debate and it was an unholy mess with a thousand commenters talking past each other, and dozens of people got mad at ME for the constant barrage of notifications sent to their phone. so unless someone can think of a sane way we can do a chat — and I'm all ears — I'm taking a pass.

It is remarkable that the criminal organization (and former political party) known as "the Republican party", or GOP, or MAGA/GOP has now dipped into the National Lampoon magazine for campaign ideas.

Absent any policy priorities other than slash taxes for the wealthy, pardon Trump for his multitude of crimes, and mass deportations for immigrants and refugees -they are now pulling things like "Look -refugees are eating your puppies and kittens" out of the same orifice where Trump wanted his MAGA cultists to shove their UV lamps to "cure Covid" (presumably after drinking bleach didn't work).

It would be hilarious -if it were not blindly believed by at least a third of the population in the United States.

I was really angry about the lack of any fact checking or pushback by the moderators, Dana & Jake, because I know they are both good journalists; or they used to be before a drum of supporter took over CNN.

Dana was a guest on Jen Psaki’s show last night & Jen asked her about that issue. Dana said it was discussed at length, some were for, some against, but in the end the consensus was against the moderators weighing in.

They felt that doing so makes the moderators become actual participants in the debate & would end up appearing that they were placing their thumb on the scale. Also it would take away from the time the candidates have to present themselves & their plans to govern.

On balance I have to agree. It should be up to Kamala to choose which lies of his to rebut quickly & then pivot to making the case for her Presidency.

I looked to see if Cruz's tweet was still up. Dipshit took it down but it should never have been posted. As if immigrants don't have enough problems, but dumping on people farther down the food chain is the Republican way. The right wing noise machine is saying that Trump will clean Kamala's clock tonight and the rubes believe it. (Check the comments on TwiX.) I find this cat eating business to be very disturbing. Killing animals, as we know, is step one for truly depraved individuals. It's once again normalizing deviant behavior. A classic tRump tactic. Give the followers permission to act in really evil ways.

Agree with you Hannah... look at Kristi Noem and her poor dog. These people are indeed depraved.

I'm so worn out listening to Trump and his b.s and the b.s of his supporters who can't find two brain cells to rub together. How do we make America smart again? Use common sense again? Think with nuance and empathy and not believe every disgusting fear-based lie that falls out of some Republican's mouth? So, so tired and I'm straight and white. I *cannot imagine* what people of color, LGBTQIA, and immigrants must think. This is the worst and most embarrassing timeline.

Funding education as they do in countries like Canada and Norway is a a good place to start. Teachers actually make a living and don't have to carry guns and buy school supplies and lunches for the little ones. Higher education, technical schools are also valued and funded.

I'm straight, white, & older & I feel this is the worst and most embarrassing timeline as well. I don't have an advanced education, I think it is a matter of having even a scrap of emotional intelligence & maturity. People without great privilege still often do, even without advantages of education, protection, & a lot of opportunity. Some have just abandoned reason & what 'we all know' as humans. They are choosing to cheat & lie, it is deliberate ignorance. I don't think it's possible for evolution to actually go backwards, we can't entirely unknow what we now know. It's just a matter of moving from emotional manipulation to fully embracing emotional intelligence. It's embarrassing to me not to have had a better understanding of that, myself, but I'm not to old to learn! It's an exhausting time to be alive but there is so much coming out of the woodwork, so much hypocrisy tolerated too long. We are due a Renaissance.

"How do we make America smart again?". I'm wondering if Harris as POTUS or the FCC can find a legal way to get fixed off the air? Or force them to run a chryon stating "we were found liable for XYZ and fined $$xxx for lying? And get it's license pulled, or permanently banned in all military and federal properties.

The gish galloping has already begun. But something tells me a new debate device, the Snorleone Scallop, will be introduced tonight. It takes the galloping gishes and filets them into bite-size morsels that can then be crammed down the throat of the gisher a là Vincent Price in Theater of Blood. You heard it here first. 😉

Perfect. I still don't understand why it wasn't bigger news. What they let Trump do to Biden was disgraceful.

I'm torn about watching the debate tonight. I'm sick of all of the bullshitting and outrageous lies from Trump and his sycophants. I'm sick of the media coddling him like the demented toddler he is. All I can hope for is that he gets destroyed tonight and loads his fat ass on to that 35 year old pile of scrap he calls a jet and gets out of our lives for good. Is that too much to ask?

You're right, Jeff...this is just a new version of blood libel. Trump, Vance, Cruz and the people who support them are truly, truly sick and twisted. And the chances that someone will be killed grow every time these fascist, rascist evil clowns open their pie holes.
