The cognitive dissonance in Juvie Delinquent Vance is very strong. He hates immigrants and the children citizens born here, yet what did he do? Marry the child of immigrants, who was born in San Diego. He loves his wife, just hates everyone who isn't her, apparently. So yes, the mother of his child picked a traditional name from her heritage. Republicans, thy name is hypocrisy, especially and including their racism & hate.

I’m just a retired RN & I have a million via saving, opening an IRA way back when & then participating in the 491K Plan at the hospital I worked at; & investing those savings plans in the stock market.

Too many people are not taught anything about managing their finances, they spend way too much on crap they don’t need & that are actually detrimental to their health.

That’s a huge failure of our schools.

People who can’t afford to rent a decent home will walk in a Walmart & pay an exhorbitant price for a fancy tall bottle of Smart Water, or PowerAid drink, it’s absurd.

Most people in this country are so wasteful it’s just appalling to me. The majority, male or female, don’t have a sewing machine or know how to use one to even repair a tiny rip in a blouse or how to hem a skirt or pair of pants that are too long.

I have pulled perfectly good clothing, comforters, storage containers, etc etc out of the garbage dumpster in front my house.

Yes, every donation is super important, even the $2 - $5 ones. I only just learned during the 2022 elections that the DNC, DSCC use the NUMBER of donations that a candidate gets, not the total raised, as a benchmark for whether they will use their war chest to assist a candidate or not. The number of individual donations tells them whether that candidate has broad grassroots support or not. So a recurring donation of $5 -$10/mo is more helpful to the candidate than 1 single donation of $50.

Of course, if you can afford to give $100 once & then set up a recurring $5/mo, that’s great too.

When I was on the Comics For Kamala call I saw many, many donations that were $5 & $7.

It did my heart so happy to see that so many people wanted to help in the amount they could afford.

Agree. I’m hoping for a Grandmas over 65 zoom, thinking the more demographic segments that are featured will cause more people to belong and get on board. It ceases to be “something out there”, to “I belong”.

Feeling this bc I joined a Women Weightlifters Over 70 fb page. It was brand new at the end of May. By mid July they’ve got over 30,000 members. I’m 76, been lifting 20 years, and I basically thought I was alone. The connection has energized me a lot. It’s the group energy. It’s the “I belong here” thing.

The boomers group is a great idea. I’m sick of defending the good boomers. All that gets featured are oldsters, navy gravy types. The complainers about the color of the sky group. Let’s change that.

Who does one get in touch with to make these ideas happen?

Maybe reach out to your local Dem chapter? Or to Shannon Watts on not-twitter, though she's probably hard to reach, or via her group's website (Moms Demand Action). Or someone at kamalaharris dot com.

Very cool that you and so many others in our age group are weightlifters.

So first he says, "We are effectively run in this country, via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs, by bunch of childless cat ladies" -- which implies the existence of an agenda ("we are run by them"), and now he's saying that Dems have no agenda?

1. King of flip-floppers.

2. King of morons who refuse to acknowledge that facts will soon be spread across the internet to refute that statement. I think it's safe to assume that KH will continue initiatives begun by, or proposed by, the JBKH admin: SC reform, codification of voting rights, codification of the right to abortion, less-unfair taxation, permanent extension of the child tax credit (from the party that allegedly doesn't care about families), action on the climate crisis, penalties for price-gouging landlords, other initiatives to help people who are burdened by excessive rent, and more.

I think Dolly cares very much about “doing the right thing.” She hasn’t just “made her mark”; she’s spent her whole life walking the actual Christian walk, and she continues to do so, every day. She’s beholden to her many fans, because she recognizes they’re the ones who elevated her in the first place. Which is why she’s thus far wisely remained mostly apolitical all her life.

Expand full comment
Deborah Hunter's avatar

Not so sure about Taylor as far as a formal endorsement. I'm saying this because of her college frat bf, Travis Kelce. He plays in the most "macho" sport in the US where a majority of fans are men and I'm sure mostly MAGA men. His team is in Missouri. Can't be much redder and more oppressive than there these days. The owner of the Chiefs is a jerk who's very wealthy and I bet votes GOP. Doubt she wants to deal with the backlash regarding his team. Just my opinion. Gen Z needs to vote for a candidate that supports their issues, not because their teeny bopper idol endorses him/her. That's a huge problem in this country. People aren't voting for the issues or the integrity of their candidate. They are voting because someone famous told them to or everyone they know votes like that. The dumbing down of America is quite obvious these last few years.

Expand full comment
Dee Whitman's avatar

I think you're right about TS's being leery of the backlash against her, given her bf's red-state connections and fans -- but I also think she's powerful enough to weather the backlash, and that she's savvy enough about what's at stake in this election to risk the backlash.

Like you, I lament the dumbing-down of Murkans, and the blind following of some Celebrity's endorsement -- but given that this is where we are today, let's use it to our advantage. Once President Harris is in office, she can turn her attention to initiatives to improve education (although the forces that prompt people to tune out of their own lives and over-follow others are complex and many, and can be addressed only indirectly by govt, such as increasing funding for psychotherapists in sliding-scale clinics).

Expand full comment
Deborah Hunter's avatar

I don't think the issue is with her popularity. She is so wealthy, so famous and beloved by millions, that there would not be much backlash against her. The issue is him. He's not in the same place she is. His popularity and fame, until recently because of her, is his job. Take away the Chiefs and her, no one would know who he is. He owes what he has right now to that team and their fans. Don't think the owner wants a backlash against one of his most popular players. The team already has had to deal with Butthead Butker. There already has been some backlash against Kelce for promoting the COVID vaccine.

Expand full comment
P. J. Schuster's avatar

I don’t think Travis Kelce is very much worried about backlash among his football fans for anything his gf chooses to do. He is a good guy & promoting people to take the vaccine already put him in the bulls eye of hate from the MAGA crowd. Hell they even hated on him & her just for her showing up to his games whenever she could & having the camera divert to her for a few seconds.

While football season was over he attended her concerts & even appeared on stage with her in a brief cameo. He doesn’t worry about all those toxic “manly men” thinking or saying that he’s being emasculated by his gf. He’s the kind of man we want on our side, the kind who supports the woman in his life in whatever she chooses to do, who is not intimidated by a powerful, successful woman.

Never liked her. But I don't like female talk shows either. I feel that women are smart, capable and they have much to offer and these shows are mindless most of the time. Her shows reminded me of some of the stuff you see on reality shows. People screaming over new cars, listening to her tell them what books to read, etc. There aren't shows geared to men like that. So I was never a fan. Then came the disastrous interview with Harry & Meghan, and recently the lying about her weight loss. I always thought she wasn't genuine. But she was beloved by millions and I do give her credit for starting a multimillion dollar empire on her talent. She was at the right place at the right time.

Expand full comment
Dee Whitman's avatar

We can't become complacent -- that's how we got to 2016!

Please keep in mind that MAGA will be around for at least a generation. For one thing, rage-filled reactionaries have been with us always -- the KKK, the John Birch Society ... Also keep in mind that today's ultra-wealthy, who control the right, have an unprecedented amt of wealth and influence (Fox + WSJ; not-Twitter; the Sinclair stations; etc.) under their control.

For another, today's enraged reactionaries (MAGAts) will be angrier after djt loses, and they'll become angrier as the US population becomes majority minority, which is estimated to happen in 2045.

But gradually the Olds who espouse these awful views will die off, and today's infants will grow up seeing diversity as the norm and (hopefully) benefiting from strong, helpful govt under President Harris's two terms and under the subsequent ordinary-people-centric terms of her Dem successors.

Right. A therapist I know also said if Trump begins to look weak, his followers will turn on him, as Italians turned on Mussolini when he showed weakness. The Great Father archetype as presented by Jung only attracts followers if the 'Father' looks strong and not weak. So the weaker Trump appears, the more followers he will shed...and quickly, too.

If we said hateful things and did hateful things from today until election day, we couldn't even come close to the awful things that have been done to this country since 1/20/17. COVID deaths, careers ruined, buddies of his sent to prison for committing crimes, families separated at the border, aiding our enemies, and the amount of hate spewed on pretty much every group in America except rich, heterosexual, Christian, white men. So as far as I'm concerned the GOP can just STFU. Bullies can NEVER take it, they can only dish it out.
