I love how you admonish the fuckwits to recognize that George Orwell and Len Deighton wrote cautionary tales, not instruction manuals.

Someone needs to write a novel about a fictitious Donald Trump who was a partisan liberal harboring a desire in 2016 to take the country far to the left, ultimately favoring the model of Stalin running the Soviet Union, while having all the character flaws and authoritarian tendencies and social media behaviors of the actual Donald Trump. Such a person might have gotten 20% of the Dem vote in some primaries, but ultimately the best he could have done would have been to fracture the Democratic Party because most Liberals in this country DON’T ABIDE AUTHORITARIANISM. Probably the original sin of not holding people accountable - the, "let's forget about the past and just look to the future" bullshit - happened after the Civil War. Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, et al should have been tried, convicted, and hanged for treason against the United States. The states that seceded needed to be occupied by federal troops until they renounced the Confederacy before they were admitted back into the Union.

Those guys were considered ‘gentlemen’ and things were very civilized at the signing of complete surrender but they could keep their guns as was insisted by Lee and agreed to by Grant. So that kind of tells you there was a lot of respect since they had both beaten the shit out of eachother already.

One of those “what ifs” is what if Lincoln hadn’t been assassinated. Because Andrew Johnson was against holding the Confederates accountable & was impeached & almost convicted because of it.

Expand full comment

Actually, Johnson was impeached primarily for violating the Tenure of Office Act when he dismissed Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.

Expand full comment

Yes, but the anger against him was initially stirred up by his blanket pardons of the Confederates. The nation was in no mood for mass executions but it was expected that their plantations would be confiscated so the freedmen could be given 40 acres and a mule. The pardons made it impossible for there to be any just redistribution.

The work needs to start before then. We need to start planning NOW what acDemocratic House & hopefully Senate needs to do, starting 1/4/26 (I’ll allow them 1 day for swearing in & stuff), to undo what Trump has done. We have enough democratic-aligned orgs to work this. & all the DoJ attorneys he’s firing? They can work on the lawsuits on every freaking law he’s broken, starting with the fiscal laws.

THEN they start working on 1/20/28. Start drafting EOs to undo everyone of Trump’s EOs. They do need to be prioritized, but the new prez needs to get writer’s cramp that evening. Line up all the interim US attorneys, cabinet secretaries, etc. don’t wait for confirmations. Get those Trump people out of there & Dems in. And there’s a big HR project to keep Trumpers from “burrowing in.” Take advantage of the probationary period & fire their asses. Let ‘em sue. I bet it won’t be hard to find cause with those clowns.

"when our current national nightmare finally runs its course, and relatively sane people are in charge again, there needs to be a reckoning. there needs to be a serious discussion about how all this happened, and real measures need to be taken to ensure it doesn’t happen again. and, this time, there needs to be real accountability."

This, Cousin Jeff, is what I live for. Not for my cat - or, not ONLY for my cat, and not to see my 12 year old granddaughter graduate High School. I'm staying alive - against the odds - to see the End of MAGA, the restoration of democracy, and the arrests of every one of those treasonous Nazis. Hopefully, some other country is still conducting research on the cure for Alzheimers and dementia, and finds it very soon...both for my sake and tRump's, because I want him to be fully aware of his downfall. The fucking fuck.

Not only arrested, but prosecuted, convicted, and imprisoned for life... preferably, on some remote island where they can all live together and practice their inhumane atrocities on one another until death do they part.

If your rhetorical questions were actual questions, I would answer thusly: this is entirely consistent for them. Sacrificing children on the great pyre of our erstwhile democracy has been their go-to since before trump. Was it Charlie Kirk who noted that a few dead kids in mass shootings was just a price we had to pay for *freedom*?

zing! i am just shocked that the orange anus, who places such a premium on physical appearance, chose women with such obvious facial skin problems.

I'm getting a real "we had to bomb the village to save the village" vibe here, but then again, I am a child of the 60s. There are things about the Viet Nam war that will never vacate my brain.

I recently read The Women. That was a tough read about those times that we lived through. I remember them clearly. I'm afraid that Drumpf feels he is entitled to his "war" because so many other presidents got theirs. He wants to kill the young ones who are strong and virile because he is not. Eventually, the dominant male is overtaken by a younger one. It is the way of nature.

Who are the Appeals Court Judges in Chicago that issued a Stay of Judge Ellis's order. We vote for Appellate Judges. We have a right to know who they are and what decisions they make. I have searched but all I can find is the names and pictures of the Judges. Unfortunately they are elected for 10 years. But enough people knowing who they are and how they did not help the Chicago people would be helpful. Shame them into early retirement. The courts need to be for the People, not the Bovinos of the world.
