Her answer was the trumpet call announcing the official death of the party. No one remaining the party is worth spit. The stank is forever.

She’s not alone, especially in the South. “States rights” is always said to be the reason; they just don't mention it was the right to own people. She was simply clumsy in her bullshit.

Expand full comment

Yet she never said, “states rights”, which of course meant their right to keep enslavjng people without moral or legal or economic consequences. So I think she had prepped her response. She thought she was being slick. I’ve had it with these slime bags. All of ‘em.

Expand full comment

You can hear the echo of the "states rights" argument every time there's an issue like abortion or medicaid expansion and Congress or the Supreme Court decides it's better addressed at the "state level."

Expand full comment

It’s only “States Rights” when it benefits republicans. They are appopletic about the states of Colorado and Maine removing trump from the ballot.

Also, about Ohio and Kansas codifying abortion rights into the state constitutions. We want states’ rights!!!!! Not like that! FFS! These trumpanzees are troglodytes!

As clumsy as the presidents of the ivy league schools trying to answer if calling for genocide on college campuses violates the first amendment.

Mike, I admit their answers to some questions were clumsy, they were ill prepared for the hateful grilling they got from the racist Stefanik, who has touted the “great replacement” theory. I honestly believe those U presidents were trying to walk a fine line between not infringing on free speech, while at the same time not condoning threats of physical violence.

What is it when a candidate for POTUS calls immigrants vermin that are poisoning the blood of our country? imo speech like that is dehumanizing certain ppl & that always makes it easier to justify committing violence against those ppl- as we have, in fact, already seen

Nikki Haley refused to get rid of the flag until the horrendous church massacre in her home state.

I've been hearing a lot of people lionize her for the fact that she removed the flag, but then I remember the events that preceded it...

I was born and grew up in Virginia (hence my name, but that's another story), where we were taught never to call the "unpleasantness" the Civil War. We had to call it the War Between the States. We were told that it wasn't about slavery; that it was a dispute about states' rights. And folks never said the word Yankee without preceding it with the word Damn. So Nikki Haley's word salad answer to the question came as no surprise to me.

"the war of northern aggression"

I never heard that phrase as a kid in the 50's. But then, I was a second generation Greek kid and the adults in my family were still mad at the Turks.

Exactly. Conveniently forgetting that the war was started by soldiers from the Citadel attacking Fort Sumter.

And a Southerner told me they HATED Lincoln in the South, but now they’re all for calling themselves the party of Lincoln? Hypocrites.

Expand full comment

Because they're a party of opportunists, they always have been. They’ll still call Lincoln a “tyrant” in their own company but call themselves “the party of Lincoln” publicly. If you really want to get under their skin, point out that the Grant Presidential Library sits in Mississippi.

Same and as Professor Robertson at Virginia Tech would say in his southern voice that made lectures like story time with grandpa, the southerners did not view slaves as people so they argued about commerce and states rights. Because, emotions! Northern Aggressors!

It's slavery, stupid.

If able, every person in this nation needs to take themselves to the Whitney Museum, just outside of New Orleans, and spend time with the memorial that tells the story of 107,000 people held in bondage in Louisiana from 1719 to 1820.

Heather warned us long ago about the South's intentions for our future. I have to finish reading that book too.

Expand full comment

She’s always had their number. It’s a theme that's run through many of her books, including How the South Won the Civil War, To Make Men Free: A History of the Republican Party, and her most recent, Democracy Awakens. I've tugged on many of those threads she exposed and read many books by other authors on those subjects. Still, I think it's fair to say that she understands and can explain this uniquely American “conservatism” with roots in the South, as well or better than any.

Expand full comment

Yes, without the list, that was what I was what I was referring to. I still have to finish How the South and ..Awakening. Too many hours on tooooo many Substacks, all very important. It's11:30 and I still have four more to go plus Rick Wilson's podcast "The Enemies List".

A dear friend turned me on to Heather some years ago and I joined her Substack as soon as she told us about it. It was down hill from there. Four Substack recommendations a week until, good grief, there goes all my beer money and it's cutting into my campaign contribution source.

With all the great and active folks following Heather, it is a potentially powerful force that can mobilize actions. If only half of them would write letters, for instance, to the five or so biggest environmental organizations asking them to, instead of asking for more money to save this or that beautiful whatever, scream as loudly as they can to all on their lists of thousands:

"Save Our Democracy Now!"

They must be made to understand that unless we save it, there will no US Government Congress or agency to address their issues and take any actions necessary. They are wasting time and precious money that could moblize their thousands of commited activists to focus on the greatest threat we have and each of them to mobilize many others.

I could babble on and there are so many other issues too, but Heather's and the followers of other serious Substackers can be a formidable force. Whew! Got to get back to finishing my reading. Take care and Happy New Year, Dean.

Damn, now it's noon.

Nikki Haley is being vague perhaps because Republicans are the party of Apartheid. God forbid she mention the U.S. Civil War being fought about slavery while her party fights to make women legal property and not human beings eligible for life saving health care. This is the party on a tirade against trans individuals like myself, who yes did serve so fuck off with your thanks GOP, but specifically the “children they protect”. The GOP will always be about the patriarchy and enslavement, Nikki knows she can’t say that, and it’s why she continues to be on the bad side of history. If she wants to write her story, drop the republicanism and get out of government. Sure the person who can’t admit to her states well documented slave riddled past should be involved in decision making like continued Israeli genocide of Palestinians. Netanyahu is obviously a Trumper based on his military actions.

“this is what Republicanism has become. you can’t speak out for what’s right, because your own bloodthirsty base will slap you down.”

Not just what is right in a moral sense, but what is actual fact.

Weird.

Facts are not beliefs. There are not “alternative facts”.

Sometimes facts are inconvenient, embarrassing, distressing, distasteful, appalling, horrifying, terrifying. They are still facts. Deal with it.

Just like the facts of the Civil War and slavery.

And yes, if you have to hem and haw about slavery, Nazis, separation of children from parents, razor wire death traps, and draconian laws preventing half the population from accessing appropriate health care, you are on the wrong side. And if you shrug and laugh and stick your fingers in your ears (lalalala) about a presidential candidate who has publicly stated and then had someone write out a detailed plan of how he would rule as a fascist, then yep, you are so far over on the wrong side that you might just fall off the planet. We can hope it is soon.

Expand full comment

But that's just it. When facts can be "alternative" there is no truth or honesty.

Accountability, decency, and shame don't exist. There's no such thing as hypocrisy or projection. The rule of law cannot exist. It is the very definition of fascism.

You can't reason with this and there will be no compromises. We either defeat it or are defeated by it. IMHO

Of course they prefer being on the wrong side because Darth Vader is cooler than Luke Skywalker or something according to Steve Bannon.

Of course none of these folks were ever cool during their school days and millions of people need to suffer now so these treason weasels can feel cool.

Great. Just great.

Expand full comment

Luke Skywalker is way cooler than Vader and Kylo Ren. Bannon has probably never watched one Star Wars movie or any of the subsequent series on Disney+. If he did, he would have known that Vader turned away from the Dark Side to save Luke. Now if all of the MAGAts would fall in line with Darth Vader, we could all be Luke. 😁

Here's to hoping that the blue wave is a tsunami this year.

Expand full comment

Bannon is just an ignorant slut who should be banned (bannoned?) from using metaphors that he doesn't have the brain power OR moral belief system to comprehend. Also, he could not be cool if his life depended on it.

I would also like to state for the record that Vader/Anakin the Force Ghost was def cool by the end of Return of the Jedi -- I mean, he was even hanging out with the other Force Ghosts and all -- and Kylo Ren earned much coolness (and lost much of the creepiness) by the end of The Rise of Skywalker... but agreed, Luke is by far the coolest of the three. I got chills when he came sweeping in and saved the Mandalorian and Grogu from certain death with a gesture (and not just because the CGI was so good lol).

Expand full comment

I would say that Kylo's creepiness took a turn to uncreepiness (is that even a word? 😬) towards the end of The Last Jedi and was back to his former self, Ben Solo.

And Bannon is a blitering idiot like the rest of them. Common sense and reality doesn't exist in their tiny little warped minds.

Expand full comment

You're right -- for some reason, in my mind, a lot of what happened in The Last Jedi got moved into the Rise of Skywalker. There were even hints that Kylo might be redeemable in The Force Awakens... probably need to watch all three movies again -- I've watched 4, 5 and 6 often enough lol...

LOL! We just recently re-watched all of them and that is the only reason I remembered. 😆

you know, if those dumbass dipshits knew how to read, their own hallowed documents contradict their convenient talking points: at least half of the states that seceded also wrote up and published their REASONS for secession, which were all about protecting the institution of slavery because states' rights and similar shit. Oh, and God-given sovereignty & more similar shit. They did this IN WRITING, via proclamation, either in a separate list of reasons they seceded or in the declarations themselves. South Carolina (the first state to secede) was one of those states. I have personally read each and every one. (It's not difficult -- they're even published verbatim online and mostly findable with the google machine.)

If this isn't just more Nazi bullshit, it must be that they can't (or don't) read because a) they're complete and total dumbasses who couldn't find said asses with both hands and a flashlight, and b) conservative education is all about anything BUT education (see point a) for details.)
