Jeff, seriously -- take a mental health day whenever you need one. Get out in nature if you can, enjoy your favorite foods, watch a movie you KNOW will make you laugh, listen to some great music, and give Ms. Spouse a hug. We will be happy to wait for you to return, rested and rejuvenated

Jeff, I took a "mental health" day Thursday. All I did all day was cry. Oh, I did brush my teeth. I think. So I guess a mental health day must mean more that vegging out and staring at the cobweb in the corner. Next time I will put on music and sing at the top of my lungs. Maybe do some yard work. If I can shovel enough snow to find the yard.

Honest question: does anyone ever understand Homan when he starts making noise? I'm not referring to the word salads that everyone in this administration produces: I genuinely cannot understand Homan--it's as if he jammed a peanut-butter-filled sock in his mouth and then started proclaiming how much he enjoys bring a Nazi. I cannot even swear he's speaking English--except that, if he wasn't, he'd be shipped to El Salvador ASAP.

It's not the job of the speaker to be "fire." It's their job to know every member of their caucus so well that they can persuade them to vote as a block. He has done that. Expand full comment
Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

AOC is one of the least qualified people in the entire caucus to be speaker, for about a dozen reasons. Again, the main job of the speaker is organization — having relationships and ability to speak to members of the party from most progressive to least progressive, not to be pretty, sassy, publicity hungry and say a lot of things we agree with. AOC holds no leadership position whatsoever and is thus untrained for the job. I will add she is starting to grow a little — initially she worked overtime to raise money all of which she kept, diverting it from swing district candidates despite her district being so blue she can't lose. She has moved on to helping other candidates. She has passed no legislation. Maybe in a few years she'll be more productive — she has improved — but it's unrealistic to propose she should be SPEAKER now.

Expand full comment
Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

More of the same? You mean, using every tool the minority has to block the worst GOP measures and keeping his caucus together to never lose a vote, something Mikey Johnson undoubtedly envies desperately. No, you don't give the House Speaker job to someone inexperienced and untrained who has served in no leadership position just because some of us are pouting that magic hasn't happened.

Expand full comment
Steve in SoCal's avatar

One of the most consequential Speakers was Henry Clay, elected during his first term in the House. And no, I don't expect magic. But something like having your entire caucus gather on the steps of the Capitol every day, or at least weekly, to show a united front against this shitshow would be nice. Sitting back and effectively doing nothing because "We're the minority, what can we do?" shows complacency (bad) or apathy (worse), leading voters to think, "Why even bother?"

Jeffries literally, in public, threw up his hands and said, "What can we do? We're in the minority." Not the answer we needed. Or deserved.

It’s the lack of money that will stop him.

As a veteran I have said this from the start… way back in October when he had his Hitler’s loyalty 2.0 meeting with the generals:

He can bluster all he wants, he can try to start wars, he can threaten till he he has another stroke….

But real wars require LOTS of money, and to get that money you must get Congress on board.

The military runs on paperwork and money and orders.

The military operations you have witnessed so far have been small special operations bc that is all he can do with his limited access to military funded operations (special operations and CIA etc)

An all out invasion requires lots of people, lots of money. Soldiers don’t get deployed for free. It’s not how it works. So take comfort in that knowledge.

He can stir the pot, but he’s got no money for the ingredients.

Agreed. The Magadministration are so out of control that they may be responsible for a global financial meltdown and a consequent Stalin era style famine across the US. This could well happen very quickly if the EU are militarily abandoned and threatened enough by Trump. Then they, together with China, may just decide to call in the entirety of America’s national debt. In this increasingly possible scenario crypto currencies are not going to be the wealth safe havens the tech bros imagine they are. As for American citizens presently residing in Venezuela, if armed local militia are already hunting US citizens and those compliant with them down across the entire country, in revenge for Maga’s actions, K.I.S.S. or Keep Inside and Stay Silent is the best advice. Running for your nearest airport will just get you killed no matter how aware you are of your surroundings.

You have clocked it exactly right.

The potential loss of power and money will move Congress to act—they don’t want to lose that.

It’s why we have already began to see a shift in Congress over the last week. It’s starting to actually affect them in a bad way. It will snowball—their hand is now being forced.

This fear about elections needs to stop because it discourages people from voting. "They" at the federal level can do very little about fair and free elections, but your state can, and we need to be looking at what our state is doing with clear eyes and less fear. A lot of what they're doing is sloppy and will hurt Republicans as well — for instance, here in Ohio they have passed a law tossing any mail-in ballot that hasn't arrived by the close of polls on Election Day. Our goal should be to educate and turn out our voters.

We need to pay attention to their ACTUAL tactics, such as voter role purges based on not having voted in the last election. Here in Ohio, voter protection groups have organized to call the voters and make sure there wasn't a valid reason for dropping them (mostly moving, occasionally voter died) and let them know if they want to vote they should re-register and tell them how.

When the greedy thieves all perish from each other by murder, and exhaustion trying to carry the gold bars through the desert, a 21st century hoover craft arrives at the last dead thief and muse why he has gold bars since gold was a cheap manufactured item.

I did not say she would have definitely won, but I have seen metrics that showed that many Biden voters of '20 did not turn out in '24. Kamala came pretty close. It's likely that a good number of Biden '20 voters would have supported her, possibly enough to propel her to victory. Of course I blame all the idiots who voted for him most of all. The GOP made inroads with Hispanics, white suburban women, and younger voters. Their propaganda is very effective, and the lack of critical thinking skills helps, as does the tactic of hitting the latent racism, misogyny, xenophobia, and anti-LGBTQ bigotry that enough Americans have. Absolutely there were many who would rather vote for a convicted felon/adjudicated sexual assault perpetrator/insurrection fomenter/adulterer/liar/ and probable Epstein co-conspirator than a qualified Black/Caribbean woman. "...many Biden voters of '20 did not turn out in '24."  To repost a comment I've made before:

In 2024, there was widespread vote caging; secret purging of voter rolls to the tune of tens of thousands of votes (voters didn't know until they arrived at the polls); provisional ballots tossed because reasons; mail-in ballots tossed on questionable technicalities; rules changed after voting had begun; and other GOP dirty tricks. There were stark, measurable anomalies among the totals (e.g., on the same ballot, votes for Dems down the line, except for Drump; huge numbers of bullet ballots), possibly due to interference by Elon's hacker posse. Greg Palast has said that if every legal ballot had been counted, Harris would have won.

Bottom line: we don't really know how many people actually voted or didn't, and what the results actually were. How do we know that people who voted for Biden in 2020 weren't blocked from voting in 2024?
