yesterday was another banner day for people canceling their subscriptions. I understand why: the news fucking sucks these day and it's only getting worse, and folks need to disengage for their own sanity's sake. so I want to thank each and every one of you who are still with us for hanging in. thanks!

Dean Gavney's avatar

Jeff, I ain't going anywhere. Your dosage of foul language and righteous indignation keeps my head above water. Since turning my wife onto your column, she feels the same. Fuck these evil, lying motherfuckers, and keep the outrage coming. We’re here for it.

Tess's avatar

Agree… Jeff has a flair for the swear!!! 🤭😁

Janice Brady's avatar

I'm not leaving. I have to have your collum daily. I've given up watching the news. I have two newspapers that I read daily, which is depressing enough. Please keep doing what you're doing. It helps me so much! So, Jeff, you're not only helping me out but also all of the same people. I don't know why people are leaving. I just had five friends sign up in the past couple of weeks. Lastly, you're fucking brilliant! ✌️

Lois Henry's avatar

If you like Jeff, try The Fucking News by Jonathan Larsen.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

Just subscribed, unfortunately it has to be for free for now.

justjulie's avatar

I did the same as you Linda.

Crystal M's avatar

I love The Fucking News!! Between Jeff and Jonathan I'm getting just about the perfect amount of swearing with the news every day. There's also The Opinionated Ogre and That's Another Fine Mess keeping me sane.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Sweary History with James Fell is fun too. I also enjoy Father Nathan Monk for a interesting twist on religion, (I'm not religious but some of his stuff is vastly entertaining.)

Stranger Than Friction's avatar

Try Wonkette, too! They're also struggling to keep and increase their number of subscribers because they link to and discuss TRUTH. Don't let the fascists win. Subscribe to the truth tellers! Cancel your subscriptions to the corporate media BS and move the monies to where you know you can get the straight dope!

Stranger Than Friction's avatar

Jay Kuo's Status Kuo substack is really good, as is Heather Cox Richardson's Letter from an American substack. Jay's Skeets and Giggles each Saturday is a must see! I laugh so much.

Yarnartist's avatar

I wonder if the people leaving are afraid that someone is watching and they may hear a knock at their door one of these days for saying mean things about dear leader. I know people who believe that could happen. And maybe it could. If they show up at my door, I have some very heavy, perfectly legal objects, which I will gleefully drop on their heads.

Yarnartist's avatar

Try Kitchenaid standing mixer.

Marla's avatar

That thing is so heavy, that I can't put it away for fear that I'll never take it down again.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Oh I have one of those too! Thanks for the tip!

Randy Woodall's avatar

I do declare... a flair for the swear.

It fits!

Michael Guenon's avatar

I heartily endorse the above! First thing I read in the morning with my coffee and toast (sunflower butter and mango jam).

Marlene Cohen Adair's avatar

Me too; you are my first read. I look for your post like a hawk with hope. Watching for the opportunities to laugh see strike and make a dent in the overpopulation of rats. They do multiply without vigilant culling. The Steven millers of the world weren’t born that way but we must deal with what they have become.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

I've been using oaths and cusses as oral punctuation since I was about 8 years old. I'm now 73. Jeff writes like I talk when I'm pissed off. These days I'm pissed off most of the time. IOW, I get it.

Doreen Dalesandro's avatar

I fucking agree 🤓 Jeff, you make me laugh, and that’s important for me and the people who are deeply concerned about what’s happening in this country. Dean, I’m with you, I ain’t goin’ anywhere. Besides, I need my daily dose of fucks🤓

Robert Eckert's avatar

I need to get my fucks every day too. Because by the end of the day I always have no more fucks to give.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

I will not cancel. That would mean giving in to fascism and I won't do it. I just wish I could afford to give you more money but I live on Social Security and don't know how much longer the checks will keep coming. But as long as I have an income I will keep on supporting you.

Susan Jane's avatar

I look forward to reading Jeff every morning. I am absolutely Pavlovian in my anticipation.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

Linda, there is no reason to apologize. The good news is our Social Security money came yesterday.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

Mine arrived last week, but who knows if it will appear in May. I'm really terrified about Trump's open and brazen defiance of three court orders (so far). There's a hearing before Judge Xinis at 4 PM today and we'll see what happens. I hope she slaps some people with contempt of court. I have absolutely no faith that the Supremes will stand up to Trump on any issue; clearly we are now living under a fascist regime. I'm really too old for this shit and am trying to figure out how to fight back and wondering if I will survive.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

About the fascist regime, Linda, I was watching Jon Stewart last night, and part of his monologue was about whether mango man is actually a fascist. His conclusion was that the current mal-administration is NOT fascist, because it's too bumbling and inefficient. Of course, I realize that Jon's point was to crack on mango man's idiocy, and he did a good job with that.

But in reality, the Dumpster and his minions are actually quite efficient. Just ask Abrego Garcia or Mahmoud Khalil or the hundreds of others who've been disappeared. Or all the people who've seen their retirement savings vanish. Or the universities, media outlets, and law firms who've felt the wrath of Dump. Thus far, this obscene creature (actually, his handlers behind the scenes) has been monstrously efficient at what I'm convinced is the end game: wreaking utter havoc on the country.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

They intend to destroy the constitutional order and institute a clerico-fascist state. They will attempt to jail, deport and crush any and all critics and quash all dissent. This is fascism; in fact, it's open Nazism. I'm just waiting for Trump's Reichstag Fire moment and his very own Reichstag Fire Decree and Enabling Act.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Ditto re the Reichstag Fire moment.

I would add that, in addition to seizing total power and quashing all dissent, they want to wreck the economy and pick up the pieces for cheap. We saw the opening move on that score last Wednesday morning, right before the tariff pause. In the meantime, part of the quashing involves destroying government services and capturing citizens' personal data.

And as you say, it's "they" who've gamed this all out---the people way behind the curtain who are implementing Project 2025, among other measures.

Doc Blase''s avatar

The Extreme Court >did< 'stand up to' Dumpty.

The Court ruled 9-0 last Thursday that the Trump administration must try to release Ábrego García, who was deported to a mega-jail in El Salvador.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

A correction: The Court said that Trump must "facilitate" Mr. Abrego Garcia's release and return. Whatever the hell that means. I guess we'll find out today when Judge Xinis gets her teeth into these pigs at the hearing.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Actually, Doc, SCOTUS said that the White House should try to "facilitate" the return of Garcia. They gave no specific orders and quite deliberately left holes in the ruling big enough to drive a Mack truck through. Accordingly, Dump & Co. took their cue and said, "Oh, too bad. We really tried to facilitate it, but gee, it didn't work. President Bukele said no, so we're out of luck."

The Roberts court went so far as to publicly insert "facilitate" for the lower court's "effectuate." They basically gave mango man a blank check disguised as a ruling in Garcia's favor.

Doc Blase''s avatar

Facilitate. put into force or operation. Plain Oxford English.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

I read the opinion. It's full of weasel words and merely says that Trump must try to "effectuate" Mr. Abrego Garcia's release. It didn't order him to do a damn thing. The Court is either afraid of Trump or is complicit in his reign of terror. We'll see what happens in today's hearing before Judge Xinis.

Doc Blase''s avatar

Yeah as if no one can type “effectuate” and obtain a definition. Whatever they’re taking up there at the Suckcreme Court they need to lay off it.

Effectuate means cause to fucking happen, for god’s sake. Oxford: put into force or operation. Make it so.

Susan Harris's avatar

I read your column first thing in the am. Keeps me focused on what evils ‘lurk in the shadows’ of our ever increasing slide toward autocracy-a necessary daily wake up to take some sort of action for the day.

Thank you for the coffeeless jolt!

I’m in for the distance.

Joan Eisenstodt's avatar

Ditto. And for all those I want to pay for v reading for free. Intellectual property is worth lots. It’s when you don’t have lots to spend. sigh.

Deborah Hunter's avatar

I'll never cancel, Jeff. You continue to be my favorite email of the day. Everyone needs to do what they can to alleviate the stress of all of this. I have an officemate who is a Dem. I told him the anxiety of Trump never goes away. I wake up and have that feeling that something is wrong. Something out of my control. I worry about my personal finances- I'm retirement age. My 401K and SS. My grown children and their children. What kind of country are we leaving them? I grieve for unknown people like Abrego Garcia and others whose lives will be ruined by Trump's cruelty. But I am more anxious not knowing what's going on than ignoring the news. Never, ever thought our country would be like this. And I have growing anger/resentment for my friends/coworkers that voted for him. It didn't have to be like this.

Declan's avatar

But.....but... Bill Maher thinks he's misunderstood!

D Kitterman's avatar

I think ignoring him hurts him more than anything. I was done with him at Ann Coulter.

Marlene Cohen Adair's avatar

Bill Maher is about clicks and eyeballs. He’s an entertainer, learning from the orange turd how to be one, polish one. He knows better. No excuses for him.

Patrick Daniels aka Cromulent1's avatar

Maher is another odious cretin, which you’re likely in agreement with Douglas!!

Celeste Hardway's avatar

I couldn't have expressed my feelings any better. Only thing I would add is growing anger and resentment at my family members who voted for the orange stain. I have six siblings, four of whom voted for this fascist nonsense. I have told them all at some point that I can't believe we were raised by the same parents! Our father gave several years of his life serving in WWII, only to have this mango Mussolini co-opt our congress and our courts, and everything else he fought for, and that I thought our family held dear. Thank you, Deborah.

Doreen Dalesandro's avatar

I have 4 sisters, and thankfully they hate agent orange as much as I do. My nieces and grandnieces are also anti VonShitzInPants. Funny thing is (well maybe not so funny), my 2 brother in-laws are VERY pro the-shitty-diaper-man-who-sits-his- shitty-ass-at-the-resolute-desk. One of them is glued to FoxNotNews and frequently tells my sister she is dumb because she is a democrat. My nephew is right there with them.

The women in my family are fuckin’ right on🤓

Rick Calegari's avatar

Same here. This is where I prefer to get much of the news as we are trying to maintain our sanity during this unbelievable, awful shitstorm.

longtimebirdwatcher's avatar

And where someone else swears as much as I do.

Megan Ross's avatar

LOL 😂 Yes, I too have a potty mouth...

Elaine the Mean Old Feminist's avatar

You'll be the last subscription I cancel, right before I throw the rope over the beam in the basement. 😂

PS: Just joking. I don't have a basement 😁

Haha, that's funny. Right on!

Stephanie Lajeskie's avatar

I just renewed my subscription last week. I know this constant anger becomes exhausting, but since that feeling isn’t going away anytime soon, I find it’s little bit easier to live with when it’s mixed with humor. And that’s where you come in. So thank you for that.

MzNicky in East Jesus, TN's avatar

Oh Jeff, that just sucks. It could be that many folks (like my own self) have subscribed to so many Substacks they just can’t read them all anymore, or maybe it’s become unaffordable. I’ll be here til the end, because if I need anyone’s take on this shitstorm of news, it’s yours. Hang in there.

justjulie's avatar

You won’t shake me off Jeff! You were my second subscription after Dan Rather. I’m like the others, I may let go of someone else but you’re stuck with me!

Bonanza Jellybean's avatar

I don’t comment on here often, but I would like to say that as long as you keep swearing like a pirate, I will continue to subscribe. You make my day EVERY day despite all the chaos and disgustingness perpetrated upon us by he whose name shall not be mentioned. You have tripled my vocabulary with some real beauts! And, perhaps scarily, I learn more from you than from most media out there. Keep it up, Jeff - I’m on board till the end. And thank you for putting the perfect words to my feelings.

You keep up up to date in a way that makes us smile and snort laugh! THAT helps keep me sane! I don’t do social media but do look at the news daily. If we ignore what’s happening we can’t complain. I marched. I make calls. I send cards, letters, and emails. I’m an old lady waiting for the storm troopers to knock down my door. When they come I’ll tell them it’s Jeff’s fault!! 😁

arne link's avatar

I'm doing my first march on Saturday. Gotta make a sign.

Linda Fulcher's avatar

I'm an old lady too and I hope that if they come for me I'll find a way to make them regret it. Got a lawyer on call.

Cheryl Keeping's avatar

As long has this old lady has a spare buck, I'm staying. You have improved my cursing and swearing immensely, which comes in handy when some asshole grabs the parking space I was aiming for. Also, you take one for your readers by following the rancid drivel that drips out of pumpkinhead's mouth.

If I had the kind of money Harvard has in its endowment fund, I could probably tell Trump to fuck off too.

Jeff Tiedrich's avatar

I know, but Harvard still stands to lose billions in government grants. that took courage

Linda McCaughey's avatar

I never would have thought that Harvard would think anything more important than money. relieved and pleased that one of our higher institutions of learning actually gets it that some things are far more important than $$.

Jayme Wolworth's avatar

This is only the beginning of Trumps assault on universities. Harvard may still fall to the fascist government of Trumpistan. He will not stop until he has control over everything.

Linda McCaughey's avatar

Absolutely agree; that's why it is up to us to stop him.

Doreen Dalesandro's avatar

I hope they stick to their guns.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

By threatening universities and research centers with pulling federal funding, Trump's goon squad is at the "coming for the intellectuals" phase. I read yesterday that DHS is developing a database of social media influencers, podcasters, etc. and their leanings. This will have an impact on info/opinion subscribers everywhere as fear grows. Courage is a choice, not an innate reflex.

Kate's avatar

This is the fucking Floriduh playbook—it’s a nightmare, and we tried to warn people!

Elaine the Mean Old Feminist's avatar

I know. I'm just feeling snarky this morning because I found out that my townhouse needs some of the joists in the crawl space replaced and it's going to cost a shitload of money. Fortunately, it's a housing cooperative, so it won't all fall on me.

John Marston's avatar

The vast majority of the endowments are tied up in specifics about how they can be used, so this will indeed hurt. And by extension as has been said, the cuts to medical research will kill people.

Susan Niemann's avatar

After yesterday's little Oval Office performance, I admit to feeling completely defeated and afraid. Thank goodness for Sen Van Holland and others…and for Harvard. 👏👏👏

We’re not just close to authoritarianism…we’re fucking there.

And why would anyone choose to cancel a sub to one of the best Substacks out there.🙄

Polly Sears's avatar

Please take a deep-very deep breath- and, don't lose hope. Our ancestors defeated a King -once, we can do it again.

Susan Niemann's avatar

Thanks Polly… I hope so. I intend to be at the protest this Saturday. I call my congresspeople. I email them. I just hope it will all be enough. 🤞

Jayme Wolworth's avatar

Congress needs to remember that they control the purse strings that pay for these "prisoners" to be housed in El Salvadorian concentration camps. Unless of course Demented Donnie is paying out of his own pocket. LOL

The first round of prisoners cost US $33,000.00 a head to send there. It's got to be some kind of grift for Trump otherwise he wouldn't be so giddy about their prisons and telling his fellow dictator to build more. I bet the private prison investors in this country are going to put a stop to shipping these cash cows out of the country soon.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

I think he gets paid per body to send them there into human slavery then he gets the gov't to pay per head, to the prison. It's always about the grift.

Robert Eckert's avatar

They really don't control the purse strings anymore. Trump has been refusing for months to expend funds that are appropriated, if he doesn't feel like it, and is now spending funds that were never appropriated, because he wants to.

Bright spot: Abrego Garcia belongs to the Building Trades Union whose head promises to strike rather than cooperate with building concentration camps.

Susan Keefer's avatar

As Senator Schiff just said on his YouTube channel, we are now in a constitutional crisis.

I agree with you about Substacks and also Marc Elias and his Democracy Docket which are not on Substack.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Murkowski got primaried (in trump 1.0 if I recall correctly). She ran as an independent, they had to write her name in...and spell it correctly. She won, proving she doesn't need the repugnant party so she's not going anywhere. Collins should retire but loves the right-wing bribe money too much.

Maggie&Lefty's avatar

Dana Jae Labrecque's avatar

Same about the Oval performance. Every day turns darker, more sinister, and hellish. The laughter among them when Drumpty mentioned needing 5 more Salvadoran gulags built to house “homegrowns” gave me chills. These fuckwads are reincarnated Nazis—seen in the uncanny photos Jeff shared of Goebbels and Stephen Miller. Good grief!

The minute I heard about Van Hollen’s statement to travel there, I immediately thought of the American Congresspeople who went to visit Jim Jones’ horror camp in South America and barely made it out alive. Jackie Speier, a Congresswoman from a district next to mine, lived to tell about it.

Susan Niemann's avatar

They ARE reincarnated Nazis, Dana. History is repeating itself. We are such a dumb species to allow it to happen a second time. We never learn.

Robert Eckert's avatar

Not all the congresspeople came back from Jonestown alive.

Dana Jae Labrecque's avatar

True, Robert. Jackie was left with five bullet holes in her body on the tarmac. Through some miracle, she was picked up and survived. I hear you on some others who died. Very sad.

Doreen Dalesandro's avatar

I’m repeating myself, but why the fuck isn’t agent orange in jail for violating court orders 🤬 Not to mention all his crimes during his first term 🤬

Robert Eckert's avatar

Because the marshalls, who are in charge of arresting people, work for him.

Susan Niemann's avatar

The most important question of all, Doireen. WHY, indeed!!!!

SethTriggs's avatar

A rare, surprising W for Harvard. But so many of the other institutions continue to bend the knee for the pricktator because they (or the money behind them) do not value the victims of President Klan Robe. Money > lives.

Tully's avatar

I hope the institutions that capitulated end up losing students to the ones that stand tall.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Oh Seth, "pricktator " is brilliant, and I am so stealing that!

SethTriggs's avatar

I got it from Stephen Colbert!

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

I’ll still credit you!

Stephanie Lajeskie's avatar

Yes, it’s nice to see that Senator Kennedy found his spine. Well, maybe not his entire spine, but a few vertebrae. But I just love the way he attributed the capitulation of other Republicans to Trump’s “negotiation strategies.” The only negotiation strategies that felonious mob boss possesses are bullying and threats. And those things only work if people allow them to. Everyone, not just in this country, but on the entire planet, needs to look at what Harvard did, follow suit, and grow a set of fucking balls!

Jacqueline Klein's avatar

Do you know what export the US has a huge surplus in over the rest of the entire fucking pl.anet? EDUCATION!!!! So now that trump has declared war on education too, we will no longer have that advantage. No more number 1 in research, development, technology, medicine, and on and on. We are no longer a manufacturing economy. We haven’t been for decades. We excell in expertise! Oh, we did excel at it.

Sharon Hudnall's avatar

Destroying our research base and educational resources is the equivalent of a war crime against this country. It's also depriving an entire generation (or several) of opportunities to grow and excel in the sciences. I will never, ever forgive the people who brought this down on us.

I applaud the courage of Harvard, Los Angeles Unified School District, Oregon Governor Kotek, Maine Governor Mills, and the handful of law firms and lawyers who have pushed back against the illegal, unconstitutional, and unethical threats by the criminal-elect.

It is remarkable to me that any major law firm would capitulate to Trump. Any current or potential client would want a fierce advocate to pursue justice. Not an entity that will simply rollover to the future prison apprentice's intimidation campaign.

Tully's avatar

I read those firms are already starting to lose some of their best litigators. I hope it's a massive brain drain for the ones that capitulated and they lose money on top of it. The money issue is the real reason they decided to capitulate and I hope it backfires on them.
