I measured my greatest successes during trump 1.0 by giving myself points for learning to spell misogyny and syphilis without multiple attempts to defeat the red dotted "you can't spell for shit" underline.

Oh, and also sycophant (though I still think it should be spelled psychofant). Now I have to learn the variants of pedophilia? My tombstone should just read, "Does spelling count?"

Don't think that - as one originally from Glasgow (Scotland) I haven't given SOME thought to this, especially knowing I have actual cousins over there...and then there's my husband's extended family in Altburg, Germany (oh no, let's not go THERE). Nothing against the good people of Germany but I'd imagine most of my time would be spent in getting into trouble with the new breed of adolph worshipers. Then again, my mortgage is paid off, my multiple fur babies' wee souls still are anchored to this lovely piece of land so I feel connected as well. Probably because the actual name is Mogen David, it was a cheap wine popular back when.

"MD 20/20 is nicknamed "Mad Dog" because of its reputation for being a potent, cheap, and widely available fortified wine, not because "Mad Dog" is the official name. The "MD" in the name actually stands for Mogen David, the original producer, but the nickname persists due to its cultural association with a strong, dizzying experience and its popularity among budget-conscious consumers. Some people also recall it causing them to feel "mad" and then sick as a "dog".

WHEN I was 21 I decided to go out for a drink with my co-workers (their treat) and to have --of course, SCOTCH. One guy (my actual employer at the time, preferred Johnny Walker Red. I sampled a couple of different brands, then decided on Dewar's. Stayed with that - either straight up or with an ice cube or 2 at Rossoff's, the old Theatre Bar we'd hang out in back then. I never liked JW Red, too 'acid' for me. As my taste got a bit more sophisticated, I switched to different brands, finally settling on Johnny Walker Black. FINALLY decided I was done completely after a bad night of real dizziness and the worst headache ever. In fact I still have an unopened bottle IN its cardboard box on my bar - probably 50years old now? along with a lot of other various bottles of liquor from the same era. Hubby drank far too much for my liking (bourbon and coke, blech!) until he finally had to stop as well. Now neither of us drink - at all. I'll have a Bailey's over ice for New Year's 'maybe', depending on the situation. No more wine either, sadly. Migraine meds and wine do NOT mix. Sigh.

Expand full comment
Denise Donaldson's avatar

There's something sbout wine that's different, even though technically, one glass of wine has the equivalent alcohol content of one shot of liquor. Weird how that works.

Most of the scotch drinkers I used to know drank Dewar's, but yes, Johnny Black is a good choice, speaking as a former bartender. As you say, it's a matter of taste. I was usually a blended-whiskey girl, but not the cheaper stuff. ; )

Expand full comment
Denise Donaldson's avatar

That used to be me, too. Then I stopped drinking entirely for a long time. The last few years, I've begun to drink wine occasionally, but I've never been able to tolerate it nearly as well as I do liquor.

Decades ago, along with my fellow bartenders, I could start the evening with, say, eight shot-and-mix cocktails, then move on to shots of whatever to end the night. I'd be fine, perfectly able to function, with no hangover. OTOH, one night during that same timeframe, I downed four glasses of wine in about two hours, and was violently ill within another half hour. Sick all the next day, too. Yep, young and stupid.

(can't now be sure, whose parents were PAID OFF by frump -all around the same time as the 13yr old girls. The girls were aware of this! I have a weird feeling that THIS is what's going to blow the whole thing sky high. None of the magats give one flying fuck about girls - but BOYS, now that's something for them to get crazy over. Just perhaps Epstein (who warned that he had videotaped much of what went on) had cameras where these 'rich old men' plied their filthy practices? WHEN the Roman Catholic Church is forced to speak out against the literal sitting president of the United States is when one knows that things are taking a very bad turn with that fucker miller going all out to do as much damage as possible. IF there are elections, they'll be a sham, IMO. I'm not throwing in the towel, but I'm not optimistic. I think the only hopes we have are that somehow, enough Rs in Congress see the light before it's too late (very long odds there); OR the NG troops and regular military just say NO (perhaps slightly better odds).

I know that men change themselves, and there are parents who do not fit into the mold, but the institutions themselves support this dynamic of pushing women into the mold. Here is the first half before the private Q and A, which you might find interesting.

They absolutely hated it when Serena was winning (which she usually was) and one of their big contentions was that because of her "ugly manly power game" she would be injured and gone from the sport very soon, unlike the "beautiful feminine" players like Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova. There’s a certain rancid consistency to this crowd. You could set your watch by their shamelessness, if the battery hadn’t corroded from exposure to their nonsense. Eric Trump bragging about casually yo-yoing half a billion in crypto on a Sunday night is the kind of line that would’ve been satire ten years ago. Now it’s just family tradition.

But the Megyn Kelly moment… that one hits different. It’s the sort of moral rot you don’t even need ultraviolet light to see. She’s out here playing semantic hopscotch with crimes against children like she’s doing a podcast deep-dive on artisanal cheese. When someone’s first instinct is to defend the indefensible, you get a glimpse of the whole ecosystem that raised them. And that ecosystem is dry, cracked earth right now.

I actually wrote about that particular contortionism today and how pundits wander into the shadow of the Epstein story and pretend they don’t notice what’s under their feet. It’s the kind of moral fog that tells you exactly where the line between loyalty and integrity snapped.

Morgan, Chase, and many other people and institutions, to determine what was going on with them, and him. This is another Russia, Russia, Russia Scam, with all arrows pointing to the Democrats. I have a 15 yo daughter and when I heard Megyn Kelly's remarks, I thought, oh, okay she doesn't have kids, let alone a daughter so she isn't mentally putting her child on Epstein's island, never mind scraping together any empathy for kids who *aren't hers*. She's in that group that has so completely detached from reality in order to preserve her way of life and who has so completely dehumanized victims in order to keep licking trump's ass, that she's going to spew this vile shit.

But she has a 14 yo daughter??? What. the. fuck.

I don't understand. I look at trump and I wonder why him. Him??? They've sold their soul (and that of their children, apparently) for that blob of putrescence?

Someday, MK's daughter is going to see the video of what her mother said and I hope by then she's broken free and had lots of therapy and never speaks to that vile harpy ever again.
